Lake Tahoe's McCall Realty to donate all 2010 profits to nonprofit children's programs

Lake Tahoe-based McCall Realty (www.mccalltahoe.com) will donate all its profits through 2010 to five area children’s non-profit organizations: Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), South Lake Tahoe Police Activities League (PAL), South Lake Tahoe Women’s Center, and Tahoe Youth and Family Services.

Owner Thane McCall announced the program today at a press conference with representatives of the five organizations. The company will provide its profits on all sales, minus a $2,000 monthly salary, through December 31. A minimum donation of $20,000 will be split among the selected charities with expectations much higher.

McCall, a 30-year real estate veteran who sold the company in 2005, and re-opened the agency last summer, has been a long time supporter of numerous area agencies, but has had this specific concept to help kids spinning through his mind for almost a decade.

“In these challenging economic times, most non-profit organizations have had severe budgetary cuts, with demand for help at a desperate level,” said McCall. “As part of our corporate philosophy, we have a responsibility and a desire to help. With the re-opening of the office and with the need throughout the community, now was the time to pull the trigger.”

The program has the firm’s profits on all sales from January 1 through December 31, 2010 going to the non-profit organizations. McCall agents will continue to receive their individual profit on transactions.

McCall’s choice of local organizations was based on his experience in the community, personal knowledge of their accomplishments and reputation, as well as need. Each of the organizations made statements at the conference regarding the use of donated funds. Three of the organizations will be dedicating their portion of the funds toward case management and long-term counseling for the most vulnerable children in the community while the other two organizations have determined their portion of the funds toward teen and athletic programs.

The Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe offers programs and services to promote and enhance the development of South Lake Tahoe youth via educational and recreational activities.

CASA provides over 100 trained CASA volunteers to advocate for the best interests of more than 150 neglected children annually.

South Lake Tahoe PAL is focused on uniting law enforcement and our local community by providing active youth programs with positive adult role models which develop discipline, positive self-image, mutual trust and respect.

South Lake Tahoe Women's Center is dedicated to improving the emotional, social, and economic condition of women and families in our community through prevention, intervention and treatment programs and services that address domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and basic needs.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services provides professional and affordable individual, family and group mentoring and outreach programs to support families experiencing the effects of homelessness, alcohol and drug use and teen pregnancy.

“There are so many kids who need assistance, whether it’s at home, in school or socially,” said McCall. “That need has grown, and especially in this economy, where donations have dwindled but the demands have risen. Every child deserves a chance and we hope to help through these agencies. We’ve been fortunate over the years and felt a desire to give back in a way that will hopefully make a difference for kids who need help.”

Karen Houser, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, expressed her organization’s gratitude. “We appreciate being included as our mandate to help the kids matches McCall Realty’s vision for assistance. What’s really unique is the unlimited potential of the concept. It serves as a creative model for others at Tahoe, or any other community.”

Cracking a window often does nothing at all as rolling down the windows has been shown to have little effect on the temperature inside a car, according to the Humane Society of the U.S.

Today I started pruning out the water sprouts in my four crabapple trees. Some people might call these “suckers,” but suckers grow up from the bottom of the trunk and water sprouts grow in the upper parts of the tree.
