Nymph fishing is the best bet. Try WD-40's, green rock worms and scuds.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Hot Creek (4/20/14)
Very good caddis and mayfly activity occurring daily during this warm spell. The small spring caddis are like candy to these wild fish and you will enjoy the best snap during this hatch.
#18/20 hi-vis elk hair imitations will suffice, try some crystal olive caddis larva patterns for nymphs.
Dry dropper rigs using para midge or hi-vis para BWO or blue wing olive adult patterns #14-18 as an upper, while dropping a broken back zebra or tiger midge, assassin bird’s nest, or crystal olive caddis/zebra larva pattern will get you into fish in the slots between the weeds.
Lengthen your leaders to ten feet here, 5X is a good tippet size.
The deeper pools can be fished with weighted attractors like SJ worms and egg patterns hung beneath an Under-cator. A hot rig is an olive or light Punk Perch as your upper fly with an assassin or PT as a dropper.
You may also “swing cast” the Punk across the deeper slots and pools for a shot at one of the bigs that hunker along the weed lines or in the gut of the larger holes. Use the yellow, or clear for short water nymphing.
Midge cluster, or para midge adults in the #20-24 range are hot flies for surface action.  BWO adults fished high in the suds #16/18 also good calls afternoon when the baetis start to emerge.
Access remains good as of 2/26/14 however the forecast calls for some snow to hit on the weekend.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Kent Rianda of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water conditions:
Flows at 27 CFS as of 4/15.
Water is clear.
(Note flows include water from the springs, not just the gauging station at the highway so this is what is really flowing through the canyon)
Fishing conditions:
Inconsistent
Fish are still keyed in on mayflies and Caddis.
Better on the warmer days, not so good on the colder windy ones.

JIGGS / ZUNINO RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Unfortunately, Jiggs has dried up.

JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF:
Grant Lake - Gull Lake - June Lake - Silver Lake - Rush Creek:
Opens Saturday, April 26, 2014.

KIRMAN LAKE, CALIF:
Opens Saturday, April 26, 2014.

KLAMATH RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
This river is not very crowded. You should be able to find a few small fish. We are at the end of the steelhead run so it has been very slow this week.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

LAUGHTON, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Colorado River:
Striped bass action has been slow but steady along this stretch of the river. Stripers in the two-pound range have been taking anchovies.
Catfish action continues to improve with anchovies being a top bait for these fish as well. A catfish topping 12 pounds was reeled in near Davis Dam.

LEWISTON LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishermen are telling us you should still be able to catch a few smaller rainbows averaging 12” to 15”.
Trout is on the rise around the marina, the dam and at Lakeview Terrace.
Courtesy of The Fly Shop.

LUNDY LAKE, CALIF:
Opens Saturday, April 26, 2014.

MAMMOTH LAKES BASIN, CALIF:
George Lake - Mary Lake – Mamie Lake – Twin Lakes:
Opens Saturday, April 26, 2014.

MARLETTE LAKE, CARSON CITY and WASHOE COUNTIES, NEV:
Closed until July 15, 2014.

MARTIS LAKE, CALIF:
Opens Saturday, April 26, 2014.

LAKE MEAD, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Anglers fishing near Callville Bay and 33 Hole are finding improved action for largemouth bass. Texas rigged worms are very productive and many of the beds are very shallow.
The top three teams at a bass tournament all finished with five-fish bags topping 24 bags, a bit of a milestone for Mead.
When fishing during the spawn, catch-and-release fishing is a good way to improve future fishing opportunity.

LAKE MOHAVE, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing slowed following the lunar eclipse early this week, but smallmouth and largemouth bass are still ready to take baits. The drop shot and Texas rigs have worked well, so have grubs and other plastics.
The reaction bite has been slow.
Catfish are biting on anchovies and the best action has come at night in the back of coves.

OREGON PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
Recreational Dungeness crabbing is open in the ocean.
Fishing for bottom fish including rockfish, and lingcod is now closed outside of the 30-fathom curve until the end of September.
Fishing for bottom fish has been good when the ocean has been calm enough to get out. Late winter/early spring is a great time to catch big lingcod in fairly shallow water.
The marine fish daily bag limit is seven fish and a separate daily limit for lingcod (two).
Retention of cabezon is not allowed until July 1.
Salmon season (except for coho) is open in the ocean from March 15 – April 30. The ocean salmon season for the rest of the 2014 will be determined in early April.
Some chinook salmon have been caught between Bandon and Charleston.
Anglers are starting to pick up a few surf perch. Fishing is usually best on the incoming tide. Anglers have good success using sand shrimp or sand worms for catching surf perch.

ORVILLE LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fish are flooding onto flats to spawn.
Fishing over the next week should be excellent for bass anglers.
The fish seem to be biting at pretty much anything you throw right now.
Courtesy of Western Outdoor News.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Upper Owens River:
Current flow is up to 195 CFS. The water is high and off color.
The section downstream  of the Benton Crossing Bridge to the monument is closed  until the last Sat. in May.
The section from the monument to the lake opens on Sat the 26th.
Upstream of the bridge is open all year.
Fishing is slow. Some larger lake fish showing up here and there. Some hold over stockers and a few wild fish available.
Nymph fish with WD-40,buckskin nymphs and midge pupa.
Lower Owens River:
Water flow jumped up to 200 CFS this last week. Fishing has slowed  in the wild trout section . Try WD-40's,  pheasant tails and hares ears.
Hatches have been sporadic lately and surface action is minimal.
Some rainbows in the 18"- 20"  showing up of late.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Upper Owens River:
It is over here until conditions change. Flows are a total blow out at 200 CFS.  This is FOUR times the discharge that was here during most of the winter.  Let’s hope this flushing flow does not wash out all the eggs that the spring rainbows laid recently.
We has an epic winter and spring season and look forward to the summer months and some dry fly action after the levels drop.
I suspect it will not be a prolonged period of this high flow rate & should be fine by opening.
Middle Owens River:
Flows have increased to over 200 CFS recently.  This release is still well below what is the norm for late April & is almost ideal for both drifting and wading. It will temporarily move the fish around and put some debris in the water, but it is by no means a game changer at this point.  If they continue to spike upward in the near future, this will make conditions tougher. Only the water lords at the LADWP know what will happen!
Look for continued caddis and pale morning dun mayfly hatches. The water will need to stabilize before they get consistent.
I suggest you have some hi-vis elk caddis & para mayflies #14/18. These are adults and good choices for surface action.
Have a good selection of mayfly and caddis nymphs. Olive crystal caddis larva, olive zebras, assassin bird’s nest, flashback PT’s, money!
Streamers like Loebergs & Spruce-A-Bu’s are how we consistently get the huge trout you see posted.
You will need a heavy sinking tip line like the one Rio makes.
150/200 grain, 24 foot streamer tips are good for current flows & you can use them in lakes as well. Check out my guide tips link at the top of the page and scroll down to “dip & strip”. This technique is the key to getting the bigs in the Sierra on streamers.
The fire  on 4/19/14 was between the Hwy. 6 Bridge near Laws, & Five Bridges Road. It was a large/wind driven fire, and destroyed a lot of habitat along the river.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Kent Rianda of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Upper Owens River water conditions: Flows at 195 CFS as of 4/15.
Water is dirty all the way up to long ears.
Fishing conditions: The flows are now twice as high as they were at the time of the last report.
The water is dirty, even high up as they're moving water down east portal to Crowley. Fish bigger brighter patterns for the best results.
Owens River Gorge water conditions:
Good. Reports of flows upward of 100 CFS as of 4/15 due to work on power facilities.
Fishing conditions: No recent reports.
Pleasant Valley Reservoir:
Water conditions: Clear and cold. Lake levels are still dropping. About an inch a day.
Fishing conditions:
Good. More of the same, but with the warmer days we'd get out in the tube and strip.
Lower Owens River:
Water conditions: Excellent - Flows at 143 CFS as of 4/15.
Fishing conditions:
Great. Stable flows now for over a week have made the fishing even better. They're still munching mayfly and stone patterns. Haven't seen much in the way of surface activity.

PAHRANAGAT WILDLIFE REFUGE, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Anglers are finding some success at the upper marsh for panfish and catfish.
Mealworms or nightcrawlers below a bobber will catch fish.

PINE FOREST COMPLEX, HUMBOLDT COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Onion Valley Reservoir:
Has dried up.
Blue Lakes:
Closed.
Knott Creek Reservoir:
Closed.

PLEASANT VALLEY RESERVOIR AND THE GORGE, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Pleasant Valley Reservoir: Power generation now occurring. This pretty much wipes out the small river section as an option.
The rez level has increased to levels that make fishing the transition section difficult. You can still move further down towards the lake proper and find some softer water with fish feeding in the suds, it is deeper and may require an Under-cator instead of a dry fly to get those nymphs down.
Tubing is best under current conditions using Loebergs, Punk Perch, Agent Orange, and crystal leeches.  Use a full or heavy sinking tip line.
Still water nymphing Crowley style can also get you into numbers along the drop-offs. Use Broken back midges like gillies and tigers, crystal emergers, and pupa patterns are good calls as upper flies on a tandem rig.
Stick to tigers and zebras as the lower flies.
The Gorge:
The Gorge is flowing at 200 CFS.  Not worth the hike at this release.  LADWP is doing extensive work on valves and hydro electric plants and this is why we are seeing such abnormal flows in this fishery.

PYRAMID LAKE, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
Rob Anderson (Cell: 775-742-1754) (pyramidlakeflyfishing.com) reports:
The spawning season is in full swing at the lake.
The hatchery is full of Lahontan Cutthroat Trout and the Fisheries folks at the lake are working hard to make sure there are plenty of fish to put back into the lake for next season and beyond.
When you see the efforts that are put in by members of the tribe and U.S fish and wildlife to ensure the future of Pyramid Lake you start to understand why it is important to treat these fish with the utmost respect.
Fishing has been really good over the past couple of weeks with a few tough days thrown in there as well. Weather plays a bigger and bigger role out at Pyramid as the spring goes on. Sunny Blue Bird days with no wind can create some tough conditions.
The fish are cruising in really shallow water and can get spooked by ladders and fishermen, especially on crowded beaches. It can become really important to be aware of the situation and if fish are in really tight to the drop-offs back up 5 to 10 feet. This pattern has been the case at some of the more popular fishing spots like the nets and Pelican. If you are in an area where he fish are tight and there are fishermen too far out in the lake then it can be best to look for a spot on the beach with less anglers.
This is a great time of year to take off the indicator and fish nymphs on a long leader and a Hover line. Albino Wino’s continue to be hard to beat for midges and Red and Wine colored Maholo Nymphs are still the way to go for nymph style flies. For shooting heads, Olive Martini’s and tan or chartreuse Beetles are working well.

RUSH CREEK, CALIF:
Opens Saturday, April 26, 2014.

SACRAMENTO DELTA, CALIF:
Rick and Tresa Kennedy of Tight Lines Guide Service (888-975-0990) (www.fishtightlines.com) report:
Striped Bass:
Considering the wind, moon and tides we had a pretty good week in the Delta Striped Bass Fishing. We continued to get some nice quality fish, however, the numbers per day were down from the week before.
We started on the Sacramento River side but moved to the San Joaquin River before too long looking to get out of the wind.
All our fish this week were caught trolling shallow water (less than 10’) using Rapala’s and Yo-Zuri’s. Chartreuse seemed to be color of choice.
The one exception was a couple fish we caught on a J-13 Rapala in Brook Trout pattern, based on a report from a friend, we gave this lure a shot.

East Walker River (4/20/14)
Flows up to 70 cCFS. Very good news for the fish. Still not a game changer here, look for the deeper runs and pools for concentrations.
The EW is facing some tough times this season, go easy on them friends.
Jeffery at the Bridgeport Marina gets an “A” for effort. He has moored his boats outside the marina (which is dry) so opening season anglers can utilize the newly painted and tuned up rental boats here.
The RV Park is also in top notch shape and currently open for business.
The public launch ramp at “the bath tub” will be open and staffed by volunteers (if they ain’t fish’n) for opening day. Go say Baaah to Jeffery at the marina for us.

WALKER RIVER, EAST, CALIF:
Kent Rianda of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water conditions:
Poor. Flows at 23 CFS as of 4/15.
Fishing conditions:
No recent reports. If you really must fish here, call us at the shop for the latest information.
Flows are back down, as the flows are highly dependent on the water needs of the ranchers in Nevada. They've never given any regard to the fish or the fisherman and will change the flows as they see fit.
