A total lunar eclipse viewing party early Wednesday at Western Nevada College's Jack C. Davis Observatory will test astronomy lovers’ ability to function on very little sleep.

Viewing will run from 3:15 a.m. to 7 a.m. The lunar eclipse will be even more unique by the fact that the day will double as a blue moon, marking the second full moon of the month.

New Year welcomes Super Moon

The second supermoon in a series of three will happen tonight, Monday, Jan. 1, 2018 with the peak occurring at 6:24 p.m. Pacific Time. The forecast calls for scattered high clouds and relatively mild conditions for this time of the year. The final supermoon in the series will happen Jan. 31, which also corresponds with a lunar eclipse for some parts of the world.

Clouds around Carson City may limit 'Supermoon' eclipse viewing Sunday

Sky watchers take note: A total lunar eclipse will happen across the western U.S. Sunday evening, which coincides with the moon’s closest point to the Earth in its orbit, also known as the “super moon.”

The downside, however, is a large band of cirrus clouds is expected to spread across western Nevada Sunday night that may limit or obscure viewing of the eclipse, depending on the thickness of the cloud cover, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Northern Nevada gets prime view of 'Blood Moon' eclipse early Wednesday morning

A total lunar eclipse will be viewable early Wednesday morning across all of Nevada and California, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. The eclipse will occur from 2:15 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. with peak viewing of the total eclipse roughly from 3:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. Mostly clear conditions expected. Bring a jacket.

Rare 'blood moon' event visible tonight in Northern Nevada with possible cloud coverage

A rare total lunar eclipse will occur across the western U.S. late tonight. Known as the tetrad or "blood moon" the eclipse event begins around 11 p.m. Pacific time, with the period of total eclipse from about midnight through 1:30 a.m.

The satellite image in this graphic taken at 10 a.m. today shows a large area of cirrus clouds off the west coast (in red oval). This band of cirrus is expected to spread over eastern California and western Nevada tonight. It may limit viewing of the eclipse, depending on the thickness of the cloud cover.

Observatory to host free lunar eclipse viewing tonight

Western Nevada College invites the public to a free viewing of the eclipse at the Jack C. Davis Observatory tonight beginning at 9 p.m. The dimming of the Moon begins at 9:27 p.m. and a subtle red glow will develop as the shadow of the Earth on the Moon gets darker.
The Earth will cast its shadow and totally engulf the Moon from 11:41 p.m. to 12:53 a.m. PST.
The lunar eclipse will be easily viewed with the naked eye, and volunteer members of the Western Nevada Astronomical Society (WNAS) will be available to answer any questions about the eclipse.
