Lunar eclipse, May 26, 4:30 a.m. 2021. I was looking forward to this event for a long time!

As darkness falls this coming weekend, there will be much to see in Western Nevada. Wrap up your weekend by heading over to Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College in Carson City for a total lunar eclipse viewing event on Sunday evening, Jan. 20.

A total lunar eclipse viewing party early Wednesday at Western Nevada College's Jack C. Davis Observatory will test astronomy lovers’ ability to function on very little sleep.

Viewing will run from 3:15 a.m. to 7 a.m. The lunar eclipse will be even more unique by the fact that the day will double as a blue moon, marking the second full moon of the month.

The very talented students in the Carson Middle School Jazz Band have been practicing up a storm to get ready for tonight’s joint performance with the Mile High Jazz Band. Their Jazz Extravaganza kicks off at the Carson City Community Center at 7 p.m. Swing by Firehouse Subs for dinner tonight and you’ll be helping the Carson/Douglas Relay for Life in addition to filling your tummy. Smarty pants are encouraged during trivia night at the Fox Brewpub and Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint.

We invite you to a special concert of the Capital City Community Band this Sunday, Jan. 28, 3:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church on the corner of Division and King Streets, Carson City featuring vocalist Stephanie Gansberg. This is our annual “support the band” concert, a free-will donation will be accepted to defray the costs of music, rentals, insurance and other band expenses.

January is a busy month for the Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College in Carson City. Among the happenings are: The first blue moon total lunar eclipse in 150 years. A Western Nevada College grad returning to campus to give a lecture on Stellar Archaeology. And then there's a lecture on separating facts and fiction about Atlantis.

The second supermoon in a series of three will happen tonight, Monday, Jan. 1, 2018 with the peak occurring at 6:24 p.m. Pacific Time. The forecast calls for scattered high clouds and relatively mild conditions for this time of the year. The final supermoon in the series will happen Jan. 31, which also corresponds with a lunar eclipse for some parts of the world.

Holy moly, water everywhere. It’s not a bad idea to stay close to Carson City tonight. There's live music with Brother Dan at Living the Good Life, comedienne Kat Simmons at the Carson Nugget, or the documentary on Bill Cunningham at the Nevada State Museum that may be enough to tempt you out. Please be careful, drive safely, and keep an umbrella handy. Keep your fingers crossed this storm passes quickly – a full moon and lunar eclipse at sunset are visible to those without cloudy skies.

CASI is hosting the ‘pooch plunge’ at the Carson Aquatic Center so that your pooches can beat this late September heat. Join the Nevada Humane Society at Lake Tahoe Brewing Company for the first annual ‘Brew-paw.’ Adoptable pets, a raffle, and more await. Don’t miss out on the downtown walk Sunday following coffee and mimosas at Adele’s. The ‘wag-n-walk’ will end up at the Visitor’s Center where you will be rewarded with a special pet tag.

Sky watchers take note: A total lunar eclipse will happen across the western U.S. Sunday evening, which coincides with the moon’s closest point to the Earth in its orbit, also known as the “super moon.”

The downside, however, is a large band of cirrus clouds is expected to spread across western Nevada Sunday night that may limit or obscure viewing of the eclipse, depending on the thickness of the cloud cover, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Learn about the universe, the origin and development of humans on Earth, and the possibility of life on other planets, in two Western Nevada College astronomy classes offered his fall. Planetary Astronomy and Introduction to Astrobiology will offer the opportunity to learn from a scientist with ties to space industry.

It’s a good weekend to be a kid in Carson City. Easter egg hunts, bounce houses, fun and games abound: I’ve made family friendly events easy to find by putting them in bold in the list. It’s a good weekend to be an adult, as well, with the Downtown Business Association wine walk and a few adults-only egg hunts.

Busy weekend ahead! It’s a wine walk weekend in addition to the Easter festivities, but don't let Friday pass you by. Head to Sassafras tonight to catch the Trippin King Snakes or Living the Good Life for music by Jamie Rollins. If it’s laughs you're after, First Friday Improv at the Brewery Arts Center will have you in stitches or head to the Carson Nugget for comedy night with this week’s funnyman, Huck Flyn.

A total lunar eclipse will be viewable early Wednesday morning across all of Nevada and California, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. The eclipse will occur from 2:15 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. with peak viewing of the total eclipse roughly from 3:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. Mostly clear conditions expected. Bring a jacket.

Remember to keep your fishing license in view, the thermos filled with coffee and tight lines all the way.

A rare total lunar eclipse will occur across the western U.S. late tonight. Known as the tetrad or "blood moon" the eclipse event begins around 11 p.m. Pacific time, with the period of total eclipse from about midnight through 1:30 a.m.

This band of cirrus is expected to spread over eastern California and western Nevada tonight. It may limit viewing of the eclipse, depending on the thickness of the cloud cover.

Western Nevada College invites the public to a free viewing of the eclipse at the Jack C. Davis Observatory tonight beginning at 9 p.m. The dimming of the Moon begins at 9:27 p.m. and a subtle red glow will develop as the shadow of the Earth on the Moon gets darker.
The Earth will cast its shadow and totally engulf the Moon from 11:41 p.m. to 12:53 a.m. PST.
The lunar eclipse will be easily viewed with the naked eye, and volunteer members of the Western Nevada Astronomical Society (WNAS) will be available to answer any questions about the eclipse.
