Don Q's Nevada and Northern California fishing report for week of Feb. 25 and beyond

Here is the latest fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada and Northern California. This report is for the week of Feb. 25, 2015 and beyond.
ADOBE POND:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Incumbent weather canceled all trips on the water this past week.
Courtesy of Western Outdoor News.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Bryan Roccucci of Big Daddy's Guide Service (530-283-4103) (www.bigdaddyfishing.com) reports:
The winter bite continues strong here at Lake Almanor even though it feels like spring. The un-seasonably warm weather has the lake ahead of schedule for 2015 with water temps starting around 44 degrees and going up to 48 degrees during these bright, sunny and windless days.
The fish are seeming to have their fins in both seasons, with our winter tactics still producing solid results as well as fish starting to show up in spring patterns.
The east shore of the lake is still providing us most of our action but at different times and locations every day.
Pond smelt are still the primary food source and the fish are taking advantage of them whenever they can. These bait fish are in great shape this year, one recent 5 pound Brown spit out several on the back deck of my boat as I was un-hooking him; measured out the smelt were 3.5 inches long.
The Arctic Fox tube fly still continues to be our number one fish producer, in some cases when the "feed" is on, these baits are bringing 10 fish an hour.
Rapalas have also been getting hammered by mostly browns, along the east shore.
The overall catch has been made up of Browns and Bows running 2 to 5 pounds.
Look for the solid action to continue as the forecast is showing a stable weather pattern. While it is nice to enjoy this beautiful weather, we are hoping winter is not over yet.

ANGEL LAKE, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
The road is closed to the lake and there will be no fishing reports for Angel Lake until late May of 2015.

BISHOP CREEK, AREA, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

BOCA RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
With recent releases here lake level is now at 18%.
Lake is completely ice free but be careful about driving down to the shoreline as some areas are like quicksand!
Nightcrawlers, Rapalas, Power bait, small Kastmasters, and jigs have been good for Rainbows and Browns.

BRIDGEPORT, RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

CAPLES LAKE, CALIF:
John Voss of the Caples Lake Resort (209-258-8888) (www.capleslakeresort,com) reports:
Beautiful weather here at Caples Lake Resort. The north side of the Lake has open water and great shore fishing.

CARSON RIVERS, CALIF:
Carson River East (Upstream from Hangman's Bridge):
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.
Carson River West:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

CAVE LAKE, WHITE PINE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Cave Lake is about 50 percent open water and you can launch a boat here.
Fishing has been fair to good for 9 to 12 inch fish using the usual assortment of worms, Power Bait, small spinners/lures and flies. Fly rodders should try Cave Lake specials, small wooly and crystal buggers, hares ears, PT’s and other small nymphs.

CONVICT LAKE AND CONVICT CREEK, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

DONNER LAKE, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
Donner has been fishing sporadically as some fisherman are still taking small Macks along the North shore and some around the China Cove area.
Rainbows have been sporadic up and down the North shore with Power bait or night crawlers. Kastmasters, Krocodiles, Rooster Tails, Rapalas or anything that will mimic a baitfish will elicit a bite.
If you're in a boat right off the ramp in about 100 to 135 feet is a good concentration of macks. Trolling through this group of fish with No. 2 and No. 3 needlefish and similar patterns has brought some success. Light on the bite.

EAGLE LAKE, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open the Saturday of Memorial weekend.

EAGLE VALLEY RESERVOIR, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
NDOW planted about 5,000 rainbow trout in the reservoir the week of Feb. 9.
Over the holiday weekend, anglers found good success catching both the stockers and holdover rainbows primarily with Power Bait. Orange was the color of choice and those using mixed color Power Bait did well as long as orange was one of the colors.
A father and son caught and released approximately 60 fish until they ran out of Power Bait whereupon they switched to worms, but didn't have as much luck with that.
If practicing catch and release please use single barbless hooks as treble hooks to make releasing the fish easier for both you and the fish.

ECHO CANYON RESERVOIR, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
The long weekend saw an increase in fishing activity. Anglers found good action for rainbows using Power Bait with orange as part of the coloration.

FALL RIVER, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Lake is at 37-percent capacity.
Fishing for shore anglers and trollers has been excellent all week.
Brian Weber of Fremont caught a limit of 18- to 20-inch rainbows near the dam from shore with marshmallow/salmon egg combos and orange Power Bait.
The areas around the boat docks seem to be providing excellent results.

HAT CREEK, UPPER, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

HOBART RESERVOIR, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
Closed. Will re-open May 01, 2015.

HOOVER WILDERNESS AREA, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Cooler temps on the way, no snow in the canyon. Midges are the most consistent hatch, with first generation BWO’s now emerging. First generation adults are large and a huge part of the trout’s winter/spring diet.
High winged dark olive, or dun colored bodies #16/18 are good profiles.
Keep them well dressed to ride high in the foam.
PT’s & bird’s nest patterns are best for nymphs.
Small parachute midge or mayfly patterns used with a 10 foot leader are best for surface presentations when the fish are on the midges/or clusters.
There are a few sections that can be fished with a dry dropper nymph rig.
Small dead drifted Punk Perch, broken back zebras, small gillies, egg patterns, SJ worms, scuds, flashback PT’s, or assassin birds nest bead heads in #18 are good calls for the dropper.
This is a year around fishery with special regs in place.

ILLIPAH RESERVOIR, WHITE PINE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
At last report the south end of the lake is covered with very unsafe ice, while the north end is ice free. With the warm weather, the lake should be mostly open water by now if not ice free it will be shortly.
The usual assortment of worms, artificial baits, spinners and lures should all work. Fly rodders should be using wooly and seal buggers, hares ears, PT nymphs and copper Johns.

JACKSON MEADOWS RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
Road is open!
With no real snow this winter one can now get into Jackson and those who do go out should concentrate their efforts on the dam and the inlet areas.

JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

KIRMAN LAKE, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

LAUGHTON, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Colorado River: The action for striped bass and rainbow trout in the area continues to be light. Trout can be found holed up around docks along Casino Row, Sunshine Peninsula or Rotary Park. Rooster Tails or night crawlers are working well.
Working backwaters along the river has worked well for catfish and sunfish.
Small jigs or night crawler pieces may entice the bluegill and redear sunfish. Anchovies are the prime bait for catfish.

LUNDY LAKE, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

MAMMOTH LAKES, BASIN, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

MARLETTE LAKE, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:

Closed. Will re-open July 15, 2015.

LAKE MEAD, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Anglers have had success catching striped bass in the area of Boulder Beach. Live shad are the top bait. If fishing from a boat, watch for drop-offs or underwater points as stripers can be found hanging in this area.
With the new moon on Feb. 18, anglers can expect to find success fishing under a light or with a submersible light fished at night to attract fish.

LAKE MOHAVE, CLARK COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
With unseasonably high air temperatures the water temps have slowly risen as well. As the shallows warm, anglers can expect a little more action as the fish turn on. Catfish have been the top fish as of late with the bite being good in most coves. Anchovies have been the top bait and one lucky angler reeled in a catfish weighing 7.26 pounds.
Fishing action has picked up at Willow Beach, and one angler reeled in a striper nearing eight pounds with a black and gold flake AC Plug near Monkey Hole.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Upper Owens River: Look for much more seasonable weather the next ten days.
Wicked cold the next few days at daybreak.
The irrigation canals and Hot Creek are dumping some ugly water into the river right now. It should clear in a few days.
The spring push of Crowley Steelhead is now on. We are seeing a fresh batch of bigs move up from the lake, with many of the hens heavy with roe.
Angling pressure is moderate/heavy.
Currently the fish are out of the deepest pools and into the longer runs, and pockets that have under cut banks as a signature. This will change when air temps get back into low teens/single digits in the mornings.
Accurate casting with heavily weighted nymph rigs are mandatory to get get these rascals to bite.
Flows holding at 45 CFS. This a very low release for this time of year. Historically the LADWP drains Grant Lake in the winter, then uses the water to fill Crowley through the Rush Creek/East Portal Diversion. Turbidity has really decreased below the merging of Hot Creek & the irrigation canals.
Access is currently fine.
We have been having good success using Assassin’s, broken back tiger midges, SJ worms, crystal Vanderleeches, roe patterns. You will also want to have some smaller para-midge, or BWO adults for the afternoon midge hatch.
The resident fish are responding to this on the warmer days.
Drifters guides use the “Four P’s” to consistently get on fish here. Position- Presentation-Persistence-Performance. Book a trip with us and we will teach you how to get these amazing fish.
Special angling regs in effect.
Open year around upstream from the Benton Crossing Bridge.
Closed from the Bridge downstream to Crowley Lake until next season.
Middle Owens River (Bishop area)
No measurable snow or rain on the valley floor.
Drifting has been fair/good with water temps well above average.
Use smaller streamers like the original Drifters Punk Perch to fool the trout.
The P.P. is a “strymph” pattern.  It can be a streamer, or nymph imitating a small baitfish, or swimming type nymph, or pupa.
I am seeing some little golden stoneflies emerge already! The spring caddis have hatched early.  These are larger than their summer brethren. #14-16 profiles are good calls.
Flows are currently around 75 CFS below the dam at Pleasant Valley.
Fishing is fair/very good from the footbridge at PV Campground downstream to the Five Bridges Crossing.
Access to this area while wading has never been easier. The cold water mayfly called the “blue winged olive” is now emerging in numbers consistently. The first generations are large for mayflies, and a mainstay in the trouts late winter/spring diet. #16/18 BWO patterns are good profiles.
Nymphing with tandem rigs-properly weighted will get you into fish before the hatch. I suggest you use Flashback PT’s, Assassin birds nest, broken back midges, tiger midges, small gillies, crystal emergers, or chironomid pupa, olive crystal zebras, & caddis larvae (to imitate caddis larva & rock worms) below an Under-cator. You can use dry/dropper bead head rigs for the warmer days working the tailouts of larger pools, & riffles.
Have some high vis para BWO’s for the uppers & keep them dressed with desiccant  to suspend your bead head nymphs.
Guided drift boat trips are a great vehicle to reach the secluded, and less fished areas of the river.
We have been logging excellent numbers of planted & holdover rainbows recently. We predominantly fish streamers like Loebergs, Spruce-A-Bu’s, Punk Perch, Agent Orange, and Crystal Vanderleeches.
Using a light sinking tip line we position the boat upstream from the target water, casting about 35 feet down towards larger pools. We then insert the rod tips below the surface to get the streamers down without using excessive weight. Stripping the line in an erratic series of short and long pulls imitates the swimming motion of injured baitfish. The “dip & strip” technique is a fun way to get into numbers and large rainbows that hold in the lower sections of the river well below the wild trout section.
Check out my “be the fly” video by clicking on the videos link at the top of the page to see how we do it.
This fishery remains open year around.
Special regs from the footbridge at Pleasant Valley campground to the fishing monument 4.7 miles downstream.

PAHRANAGAT WILDLIFE REFUGE, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Anglers are finding some success at the upper marsh for panfish and catfish.
Mealworms or night crawlers below a bobber will catch fish.

PINE FOREST COMPLEX, HUMBOLDT COUNTY, NEV:
Onion Valley Reservoir:
Closed. Will re-open second Saturday in June, 2015.
Blue Lakes:
Closed. Will re-open second Saturday in June, 2015.
Knott Creek Reservoir:
Closed. Will re-open second Saturday in June, 2015.

PIT RIVER, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

PLEASANT VALLEY RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Lots of smaller (5-7 inch) planted rainbows around.
The level is 4380′, this is very good to fish the transition area.
The small river section has been excellent for numbers of smaller rainbows.
Forget fishing the river, or inlet if the hydro station is ramped up (this is uncommon during the winter/early spring, but can occur to flush ice from the huge aqueduct pipeline at times).
Dry dropper combos using Stimulators, hi-vis para BWO’s or hi-vis caddis may be used as the upper fly-use crystal olive caddis larva, flashback PT’s, Assassins, broken back or crystal tiger & zebra midges as your dropper bead head nymph.
“Freeze tubing” has been very good recently.
Streamers like Loebergs, Agent Orange, Crystal leeches, & Spruce-A-Bu’s will get you into some nice browns, & larger bows in the rez proper.
Use a full sinking line to get down to 10-15 feet quickly.
You can also fish “Crowley midge style” in the rez near the drop-offs.
Fish chironomid patterns below an Under-cator.
Gillies, broken back midges, crystal emergers & pupa patterns.
Tiger & zebra midges are always a solid choice for your larva pattern.
This fishery is open year around.
The Gorge 2/24/15
Great place to go if you want to escape crowds.
Have those mayfly nymphs, & blue winged olive, & caddis adults handy.
The spring caddis are coming off early this year.
No snow or ice, trails are fine. This maybe the best dry fly fishery we have during the winter months.
The Gorge could be classified as the true “tailwater” from Crowley Lake.
The fish here are all wild browns with a large one going 16 inches. Moderate/difficult hiking is required to access the more secluded sections. Rock hopping and bush whacking can be expected.
Dry/dropper bead head nymph combos work well in the deeper pools.
Use PT’s, Assassin birds nest, broken back midges, tiger midges, & crystal olive larva patterns as the nymphs. Hi-vis para BWO’s, Stimulators, parachute midge adults, & elk caddis are good choices for your dry fly.
Pack in water , have cleated wading boots and a stout staff. 2-4wt. rods are perfect for this water.

PROSSER RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
Lake is at 24 percent capacity. Completely ice free.
Small Rainbows here but since this lake was only stocked once fishing has been pretty slow, much better around the dam.

PYRAMID LAKE, WASHOE COUNTY, NEV:
Rob Anderson of www.renoflyfishingoutfitters.com (775-742-1754) reports:
February 24 report: We are one week away from March. The spring season is just around the corner. The fishing has been all over the map over the past week. A small storm moved through and brought some wind to the lake on Sunday. There were some pretty good reports from numerous beaches around the lake. The Summit Lake strain Cutthroat’s are starting to show up in smaller schools in shallow water. There have been plenty of big fish caught as well.
Even though we are approaching what lots of anglers would say is the peak of the season, weather still plays a big part in the fishing.
Calm sunny days can be tough any time of year.
If you get some wind it is normally better even in March and April.
Nymphing is starting to pick up around the lake and stripping Wooly’s, Beetles and Tadpoles are also working well.
White Ghost Loco Tadpoles or any bright fly is a good choice and for two fly rigs also tie on a Midnight Cowboy or a Bloody Mary. Maholo Nymphs in Red or Wine are hard to beat for Nymphing but Balanced Leeches and Maholo Midges are also worth some time.
Fish can be caught any time of day but early and late continue to give you a little better chance.

RUBY LAKE NWR, WHITE PINE, COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing is still fair to good depending upon the day, the angler and where you are fishing along the collection ditch.
The go-to fly seems to be the hares ear, with the pheasant tail nymph close behind. Also wooly buggers, egg patterns and flies that have some red in them also seem to be working. Trout are starting to take a hit at anglers strike indicators, so egg patterns are definitely worth trying.
For spin fishermen the usual assortment of small spinners and minnow type lures are all effective here.
The ditch is artificial lures and flies only and wading is not allowed in the ditch.

SACRAMENTO RIVER (LOWER), CALIF:
Kirk and Lisa Portocarrero at outdooradventures@sacriverguide.com and www.sacriverguide.com (1-800-670-4448) report:
King Salmon closed. Will re-open July 16.

SAN JOAQUIN RIVER/RED’S MEADOW, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Road closed.

SHASTA LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
It will be two to three days after the rains stop and visibility returns before it picks back up again.
Then try 1/2 ounce spinnerbaits in chartreuse/white in the top 3 feet.
Courtesy of Western Outdoor News.

SHASTA LAKE, CALIF:
Kirk and Lisa Portocarrero at outdooradventures@sacriverguide.com and www.sacriverguide.com (1-800-670-4448) report:
February 24,  2015  Shasta Lake guided fishing
Northern California fishing Lake Shasta.
Offer daily guided fishing on Lake Shasta.
For Shasta Lake fishing,  we are currently catching limits of bass daily, Spotted bass and Small mouth bass. We are catching bass along the banks and down 35 ft. Averaging 25 to 35 hook ups a day.
Using spinner baits and crankbaits early morning, and using rubber worms the rest of the day, with mid-afternoons being the best as the day warms.
The Sacramento Arm has been producing the most fish at the moment.
We are also picking up some Rainbow Trout while throwing crankbaits.
We will start trolling Shasta Lake for King Salmon and Trout, in the month of March. Last year around March 15, we were 2 to 6 pound King salmon, trolling 35 to 75 ft deep.
If you have any more questions or to book your Northern California guided Lake Shasta fishing trip, please call us at 1-800-670-4448

SOUTH FORK RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing has been slow to fair most days with the occasional good day scattered in between. Fish range in size from 12 to 18 inches on average with a few coming in around 20.
Shore fishing has been good as the fish are in the shallow warmer water.
Water temperatures are in the 40’s.
Areas that have been productive for trout include the main boat ramp cove, Tomera Cove, the bluffs below the east side campground and Jet Ski Beach.
Sherbet Power Bait or worms is what most anglers have been using with the Power Bait doing the best.
Flyrodders should be trying wooly buggers, seal buggers, hare’s ear nymphs and pheasant tail (PT) nymphs. As the water starts to warm up, anglers should start trying chironomid patterns.

STAMPEDE RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
Lake is dropping and is at 21 percent capacity. Fishing has been slow for Rainbows, Macks, and Smallies.
Some thin ice in the inlets but for the most part lake is wide open.
Small boats can still launch to the right of the ramp as they are concentrating their efforts outside the inlets and the deeper sections around the dam.
Shore fishing has been sporadic for the Bows with power bait, nightcrawlers, and various hardware.
Smallies are suspended along shelves in the Davis Creek arm and most are being taken on suspending baitfish patterns, Crayfish patterns, and various Jigs worked down these shelves.
Some big smallies here, but you'll have to work hard for them.

LAKE TAHOE:
A continuing report of limits of average sized Mackinaw Trout being caught on silver flasher blades and minnows, trolled at depths of 100-300 feet on the west side of the lake near Homewood, California.

TRINITY RIVER, CALIF:
Kirk and Lisa Portocarrero at outdooradventures@sacriverguide.com and www.sacriverguide.com (1-800-670-4448) report:
February 24, 2015 Fishing report
Currently, Trinity River flows are as follows;  Currently 300 CFS.
We are fishing the Trinity River for Winter Steelhead fishing and fishing is good. Steelhead have been ranging from 4 to 10 pounds, number of hook ups are 4 to 8 fish  days, varying. Getting into some nice steelhead now.
Fly or Spin fishing are both productive.
We are fishing from Lewiston Bridge to JC Campgrounds.
Trinity River fishing is conveniently located 40 minutes West of Redding, CA  fishing from the town of Weaverville, California.

TRUCKEE RIVER, CALIF AND NEV:
Rob Anderson of www.renoflyfishingoutfitters.com (775-742-1754) reports:
February 24 report: Flows on the Truckee remain in excellent shape. The water is a little off color still but it is totally fishable. The water is really low from Tahoe City through the Town of Truckee but once you get downstream of the Boca Bridge it is fine and the fishing has been really good.
With the off colored water Nymphing and streamer fishing has been working well.
You can get pretty close to the fish and really make some good drifts right now.
High Sticking and Indicator Nymphing have both been working well.
Afternoons have been the best when the water has had a chance to warm up some.
A good fly combo to use is a larger fly like a Stonefly nymph with a smaller dropper in a size 16 or so. Bead Head nymphs like Pheasant Tails are a good bet.
Flows are Town of Truckee 59 CFS, Boca Bridge 363 CFS, Farad 388 CFS, Reno 343 CFS and Vista 391 CFS.

TRUCKEE RIVER, CALIF & NEV:
Mountain Hardware and Sports of Truckee (530-587-4844) (mountainhardwareandsports@gmail.com) reports:
California:
Later in the week we should see some unseasonable, and coupled with the higher flows, should make for some great early season fishing!   Maybe some snow on the weekend and thru next week but I wouldn't hold my breath.
A miracle March would be great for snowpack, so cross your fingers!
Best hours to fish will be 11 to 3.
Water temps are cold and fish are somewhat lethargic and somewhat picky.
Lots of Midges and small BWO/Baetis Mayflies and even Skwala Stones
Flows are reasonable but the general outlook could be dismal if we don't see an increase in out snowpack. Snowpack sits at 27 percent now.
Fishing has been pretty good with a mix bag of streamer fishing to throwing dries to rising fish.  Best sections to fish have been the Glenshire stretch as some anglers have seen double digit days here.
Nevada:
If you do fish the Truckee in Nevada please be aware that New Zealand Mudsnails have been found in sections of water there so please clean your shoes and gear accordingly to avoid aquatic hitch hikers!
Study the water and turn rocks and see what is going on, also seine for what is in the drift.  Little things like this and slowing your approach to the river’s edge will greatly increase your chances of being successful.
Again, make sure your box is stocked with every conceivable stage of bugs that are present now.

TRUCKEE RIVER, LITTLE, CALIF:
Rob Anderson of www.renoflyfishingoutfitters.com (775-742-1754) reports:
February 24
Flows have been flat lining at 157 CFS for a while now.
These are great flows for the Little Truckee any time of year. At these flows fish are really spread out and can be found just about anywhere.
Side channels, eddies and seams are a really good area to look for fish as well as in deeper pools in slower water.
There is not much of a hatch but there are some Baetis around on cloudy days as well as Midges. Nymphing with these patterns are the way to go with 5X tippet. Keep an eye out midday for some bugs hatching and have dries ready to go.

TWIN LAKES, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF:
John and Carolyn Webb of the Virginia Lakes Resort (760-647-6484) (vir@qnet.com) report:
Have a great winter, and let's pray for a lot of snow for water to refill all the reservoirs, lakes and streams with plenty for the ski resorts.
May you all have a Happy, Healthy 2015, see you on the water in late April!
Carolyn

WALKER LAKE, MINERAL COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
No new updates. No Lahontan cutthroat have been reported or seen at Walker Lakes since 2009.
Launching is not possible right now.

WALKER RIVER, EAST, NEV. & CALIF:
Rob Anderson of www.renoflyfishingoutfitters.com (775-742-1754) reports:
The East Walker has been flowing around 20 CFS for a long time.
The cold air in the Bridgeport area has started to be a factor again with ice.
There is some warmer weather on its way and that might be a good time to give it a try. 20 CFS is really low and fish are in deeper slower runs right now.
Hopefully we get some snow in the East Walker Drainage soon and better flows will come along with irrigation season.

WALKER RIVER, EAST, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
East Walker River:
February 22, 2015
We've had a few reports coming in from the EW this past couple weeks, it still sounds like the best area to fish is the Nevada side of the river.
I wouldn't say the fishing is excellent by any means but if you put in some time and are on your game you should be able to bag a few nice fish each day.
Most of the anglers we've talked to are reporting 1 to 3 or maybe 4 fish per day, lower numbers are being reported on the Miracle Mile section in Cali.
The water is running about 20 CFS so it's imperative to focus on the deeper pools and runs, also you need to be very stealthy so as not to spook fish that are in shallow water.
We've heard there are some pretty good baetis hatches each day but not too much surface action to go with them.
The successful anglers have been using WD-40's, flashback emergers, san juan worms and rainbow warriors. I'm sure there are other patterns that will work and we just haven't heard of them lately.
Sceirine Ranch:
February 22, 2015
We haven't had anyone on the ranch for the last several weeks though I'd expect the fishing to be about the same as the Rosachi section, just without any other possible competition! Give us a call if you want to hit up the private section!
Hunewill Pond:
February 22, 2015
We're expecting the pond to be thawed out by now, as soon as this weather system goes through we'll try to get out there to fish for a bit so we can get you a good report, we'll just have to consider that an occupational hazard!

WALKER RIVER, EAST, CALIF:
Tom Loe of the Sierra Drifters Guide Service (760-935-4250) (www.sierradrifters.com) reports:
Flows currently at 20 CFS. Limited fishable water.
This fishery is open year around with special regs in place.

WALKER RIVER, WEST, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
February 22, 2015
We haven't talked to anyone who's fished the West for the last several weeks, if anyone has any info we'd love to hear about it so we can pass it on!

WALKER RIVER, LITTLE, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Wow! Early February had people ice fishing and by the Wild Horse Trout Derby this past weekend, the lake was 50 percent open water.
As of this past Thursday, the lake was about 85 percent open water with just a big ice island in the middle and some very rotten ice in the canyon by the dam.
Congratulations to Keith Turnbow who placed first on Saturday at the Wild Horse Trout Derby, taking home $605, and to Kevin Hull, who took home Sunday’s top prize of $420. Turnbow’s fish came in at 23.5 inches, while Hull had the big fish of the weekend at 24.5 inches.
Most anglers were catching fish with either worms or Power Bait, with many anglers using a combination of worms with either corn or marshmallows.
Fishing was just fair for numbers, especially on Saturday, but fish were averaging between 18 and 20 inches. One 29 inch, 9.7 lb. catfish was caught!
What a strange winter this has been. Expect fishing to be fair for a bit until the water starts warming into the low 50’s, which with the current weather trends may be by early to mid March.

WILLOW CREEK RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Water is only about 10% of capacity and is covered with unsafe ice.

WILSON RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Wilson is more than 80% and should reach capacity and start spilling sometime in early spring.
Fishing was slow to fair last fall and expect those conditions to continue until it is stocked later in the spring. While NDOW only stocked about 23,000 fish last year due to the low lake levels, expect that number to double this spring.
The county road was graded, but once you get past the county’s portion, it does get rutted. You don’t need 4WD at this time, but you do need some clearance due to the ruts.

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, CALIF:
Closed. Will re-open April 25, 2015.
