Carson City Commute for Jan. 6: Chains, snow tires required in spots
Packed snow and ice remain in spots on highways around the Carson City area, affecting the Friday morning commute in places.
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) reports Interstate I-580 through Washoe Valley, as well as Old Highway 395 Alternate to the west, continue to require chains or snow tires between Carson City and Reno.
Also Highway 50 West up to Lake Tahoe has chain or snow tire requirements in Carson City and Douglas County.
Chains or snow tires are required on an eight-mile stretch of State Route 28 in Washoe County, as well as on SR 431 up the Mount Rose Highway.
There are no road controls posted for Highway 395 South through the Carson Valley or Highway East from Carson City into Lyon County.
SR 207 from the top of Kingsbury Grade to Foothill Road in Douglas County is closed for a sinkhole repair. Chains or snow tires are required on SR 207 from the junction at Highway 50 West to the top of Kingsbury at Tramway.
Weather should not affect morning and afternoon commutes Friday due to a brief break between storm systems, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno reports.
The next front is expected to move into Western Nevada late Friday into Saturday morning with up to a 60 percent chance of precipitation overnight and increasing to 90 percent later in the day. There is also a chance for freezing rain before 11 a.m. Saturday, according to the NWS.
High temperature in Carson City Friday is forecast to be around 30 degrees. The overnight low is forecast to be about 26 and a high Saturday of around 42 degrees.
