Carson City Parks and Recreation Community Service Awards Ceremony on July 12
The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation will present Community Service Awards for year 2017 recipients in a brief ceremony on Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at 5:30 p.m. at the monument at the entrance to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion in Mills Park.
The public is invited to attend this free, outdoor event. An Open House reception at the Wungnema House, the stone house on the east end of Mills Park, will follow the ceremony. The awards are presented to individuals, organizations, and businesses that make a significant contribution to the combined missions of the Foundation and the Carson City Department of Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces (Parks Department). These awards will be presented:
Volunteer of the Years - Chris MacKenzie has been involved within the Parks Department for many years. As his two children progressed through the Department's programs, Youth Basketball in particular, he enhanced the experience for countless children in our community. He has coached and volunteered within the Department's leagues for more than nine years, often coaching two teams each season. Chris' coaching exemplifies philosophies such as teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship.
Volunteer of the Year - Robyn Orloff has been an amazing asset to the Open Space Division of the Parks Department. Because of her passion for the outdoors and her enjoyment of hiking, she consistently volunteers her time to clean dumpsites and homeless camps, removes trash found along trails, and even recycles some of the materials she has removed. She has dedicated hundreds of hours to the Prison Hill Recreation Area, ensuring that it remains the pristine, natural area that it was intended to be.
Organization of the Year - Muscle Powered has been an advocate for a walkable and bikeable friendly community for more than two decades. It has been instrumental in changing the community's attitude toward non-motorized transportation, bicycle and pedestrian safety, and trail advocacy. It is the community's conscience for the planning of bike line facilities and multi-use paths. It has engaged the community by sponsoring multiple events to highlight safe walking and bicycling activities, such as Bike to Work Week, Westside Cruiser Ride, Celebrity Ride, Community Bike Rodeos, community clean up events along the City's multi-use trail system, and its "Trash Mobs" that remove garbage from the community's recreational areas. Muscle Powered assisted the Parks Dept. with grant writing, has been actively involved with the Carson Off Road (Epic Ride) event, and donated yellow bike racks throughout the community.
Business of the Year - CarsonNow.org began as a business in 2009, but really took off in 2011. It gets more than 15,000 webpage views daily. It is dedicated to serving our community with constant and consistent reporting of news from all around Carson City, including what is happening within the Parks Department. CarsonNow.org is always willing to work with the Department to publish stories, events, and registration information on its website and social media page(s). Its punctual writing of stories for the Department aided in getting out news to our community, especially with the recent flooding.
Each recipient's name will be placed on the monument in Mills Park. The selection of award recipients is a cooperative effort between the Parks Department and the Foundation. In addition, the names of Thomas P. Tarpey and Francis Xavier Holub will be added to the Wall of Memory.
