More than 4,000 pounds of food donated through Dayton Stamp Out Hunger

The annual Letter Carriers’ “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive was a big success in Dayton.
The community donated over 4,000 pounds of food for Healthy Communities Coalition’s Dayton Food Pantry through the May 12 food drive.
The postal workers tirelessly collected donations, then the Dayton Food Pantry volunteers sorted and helped distribute the donations to those in need.
Dayton Food Pantry manager Alie Trier said, “I want to get a thank you out to this amazing community that’s always coming together to keep the food pantry doors open. This humble community is always giving selflessly to help their neighbors. It is just an honor to see and be a part of an awesome community coming together once again. Thank you.”
The national Letter Carriers’ “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive is held each year on the second Saturday in May.
America’s letter carriers joined thousands of volunteers on Saturday, May 12 to come to the rescue of millions of struggling families throughout the United States through the 26th annual Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive.
The food drive always results in generous donations in our region as well as across the U.S.
Pantry Location: The Dayton Food Pantry is located at 209 Dayton Valley Road and is open Monday-Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

How does the pantry work?
People of the Dayton area work with the nonprofit Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey counties in volunteer service to keep the Pantry going strong.
Volunteers range from the very young to elders, and come from all walks of life. They're united by the belief that no one should go hungry.
Healthy Communities funds management and oversight of the Pantry, maintains required data reporting such as the number of boxes and pounds of food distributed, and provides training for the dedicated volunteers who give thousands of hours of service to the Pantry each year.
Coalition staff, along with partners such as Community Chest, Inc., help write and manage grants to support the Pantry as well.
The Pantry collects donated food through Food Bank of Northern Nevada and benefits from reduced price rates from many area grocery stores. Through grants, USDA, fundraisers, food drives, and generous donations from farmers, diverse groups, businesses and individuals in the region, the Pantry is able to help people of all ages avoid hunger.
Part of a Regional Food Hub: The Dayton Food Pantry is one "spoke" in a regional Healthy Food Hub, an effort of many groups and individuals to increase access to and demand for affordable, local and sustainably grown food.
