Carson City Leisure Hour Club begins another historic year
The Leisure Hour Club will begin its 128th year with their first dinner meeting set for Thursday, Sept. 19. Focused on the Carson Tahoe Health Auxiliary, presenting at the event will be a LHC member, Gloria Seaton, as well as Terry Scherl, and Sam Allec.
Each of them will share their insights on the auxiliary, its history, present day activities, volunteer opportunities, and what the community organization does to help patients.
The Carson Tahoe Health (CTH) Auxiliary was established in 1952 as a volunteer-based blood transportation service for the hospital. LHC member Seaton is one of the auxiliary’s past presidents and the current chair of the Communications Committee. Scherl is also a past president and Allec is the current secretary.
After its founding, CTH Auxiliary members quickly identified other areas where they could lend a helping hand and the CTH Auxiliary became a permanent fixture at Carson Tahoe. As the coalition between the hospital and the Auxiliary grew, so did the fundraising that supports the hospital's quality healthcare philosophy.
The Leisure Hour Club, established in September of 1896, is Carson City’s oldest continuously meeting social organization. The organization is focused on its goal of promoting knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature. Its motto of "Let knowledge grow from more to more" comes from Tennyson’s poem In Memoriam.
Members paying their annual $25 dues, or new members joining in September, will have their September dinner costs covered by the Club. Reservations are required on or before Sunday, Sept. 14 for the meeting and dinner and can be made by calling 775.302.8820 or by email to lhcreservations@gmail.com.
