Soroptimist presents Human Trafficking Program and Art Exhibit
Carson City Soroptimist will wrap-up its month-long Human Trafficking and Living Violence Free Awareness Program with a panel discussion and art exhibit on Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the north room at Glen Eagles Restaurant.
The panel discussion will take place during lunch, from noon until 1 pm. Reservations are required, with an optional plated lunch available for $16. To reserve a seat, email sicarsoncity@gmail.com or call 775-297-4890 before noon, Monday, February 26.
Guest speakers on the panel include Catherine Leon from Awaken in Reno, Misty Stewart from Live Violence Free in South Lake Tahoe, Tracy Trenoweth and Becca Singleton from Advocates to End Domestic Violence and its Sexual Assault Response Advocates Program, and Erin, local trafficking victim and community volunteer.
The art exhibit is open to the public before and after the Program Luncheon, from 11 a.m. until noon and again from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. The artwork is some of that created by Nevada high school students for the 2017 Break These Chains Live Free art contest: Human Trafficking - The Ugly Truth.
These pieces depict, through art, the dehumanizing of one’s body and soul. Break These Chains Live Free is a Nevada non-profit corporation created by Soroptimist clubs in southern Nevada. Its mission is the eradication of human bondage throughout the community and the world.
The 12 posters on display include the first-place winners in each category. In Category 1, ages 14-15, 15-year-old Lainey Dattilio won for her artwork of bound hands. She said, "It shows human trafficking because it is basically imprisonment, which is shown by the hands being tied up by the rope. Not coloring the hands makes them stand out and emphasizes how real it is."
In Category 2, ages 16-17 years, 17-year-old Syamini Breathwaite took top honors. She said of her artwork, of a shadowy person shopping, "My artwork is supposed to represent women and how they are not objects. You cannot buy a woman or anyone, and I wanted to make a picture of a creative way of showing that nobody has a price tag." Voting for the 2018 Contest ended in January. Fifty-three entries were received, narrowed down to seven finalists. You may see the newest finalists, along with the artists' statements, on the Break These Chains Live Free Facebook page.
