January is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, and according to Carson City’s Advocates to End Domestic Violence, the best thing you can do is be informed of the warning signs.

According to crime data published by Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, Carson City’s overall crime had a 6 percent decline between 2018 and 2019.

CARSON CITY — A strategic plan to address commercial sexual exploitation of children in Nevada is the culmination of more than two years of effort by a broad cross-section of individuals representing child welfare, juvenile justice, the courts, service providers, advocates and other entities that work to end the commercial sexual exploitation of children in Nevada.

A woman who says she was sex trafficked through a Nevada brothel filed a federal lawsuit Monday that seeks to overturn the state’s legalized prostitution in rural counties.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Last month, award winning advertising agency SJ Marketing turned its annual client-gift project into a community support campaign, raising more than $1,250 for area non-profits. Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto and other supports of the bill will join Sandoval as he signs AB67 into law. The bill establishes the crime of sex trafficking of children and adults, and makes victims eligible for state assistance and allows them to sue their traffickers. By doing so, the bill holds pimps accountable and protects the victims of sex trafficking.

The bill requires officers to take certain actions when they encounter possible victims of human trafficking. It also requires the state Department of Education to develop and distribute material relating to the trafficking of children.

I took some time over Spring Break to look back on what we’ve done so far. It makes me happy to see the breadth of issues that our reporters have covered — animal cruelty legislation, protests, measures to protect children from human trafficking, and so much more. Their work has been featured in the Reno Gazette-Journal and on our local NPR and PBS affiliate stations — and it’s no wonder why. It’s quality journalism.

The Sunset Rotary Club of Carson City has partnered with the Sunrise Rotary Club of Bishop, Calif., to send used and new camisoles, sports bras and bras to Free the Girls, a nonprofit organization dedicated to giving women a sustainable income once they have been saved from the sex trade and human trafficking industries in Africa and South America.
