During a recent interview I was asked about my impending retirement from 35 years of pretending to be Mark Twain and was probed about embarrassing moments. The Nevada State Elks Association provided 27 scholastic awards to students, throughout our state, toward their college expenses. Other cash awards were given to six Legacy Award winners, two Vocational Award winners and five Nursing Scholarship Award winners. Carson City Elks lodge had 3 scholastic recipients at the NSEA level.

My friend Cat asked me to identify what was eating the bottoms, and only the bottoms, of her cherry tomatoes. While it could be birds, earwigs, slugs or cutworms, we both decided it was grasshoppers, which she had seen eating her raspberries. If raspberries, why not tomatoes?

The Executive Director of the Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED), Tom Burns, will be the featured speaker at the next Rotary Club of Carson City Meeting. Burns will discuss the state’s current economic condition as well as potential opportunities for growth over the next several years. The meeting takes place Tuesday, September 5th at noon in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom. The public is invited to attend.

As the Nevada State Museum prepares to celebrate another year sharing Nevada’s unique history, the Friends of the Museum are again offering an opportunity for new and experienced volunteers and tour guides to learn more about our region, history, and the State Museum.

This week, the senior in the spotlight is Anna Turner. Anna is a bright, dedicated, hardworking young woman. Ranked third in her class, with a 5.1 weighted GPA, Anna has never received lower than an A throughout her high school career, while taking an extremely challenging load.

A 30-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of felony domestic battery with strangulation, preventing a victim from reporting a crime, and being a prohibited person with a firearm, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

The educated and articulate Grosh brothers were faced with Shakespearean misfortune almost from the day they left Pennsylvania bound for the California Gold Fields. They also designed an unsuccessful water pressure powered perpetual motion machine and an improved but unsuccessful gold recovery device. They were so close to achieving their goals, including a big strike, but it was almost as if a deliberate and cruel hand of fate was intentionally working against them.

"Sierra Highway: U.S. 395 and El Camino Sierra in California and Nevada" is the fourth volume in his growing "Highways of the West" series, joining "America's Loneliest Road" (U.S. 50, which also touches on Carson City history), "Victory Road," and "The Lincoln Highway in California."

Just after 10 a.m., a crash was reported at the intersection of Highway 50 and Airport Road.

Injuries have been reported.

In a collaborative effort to ensure the safety of all road users as they travel this Labor Day weekend, the California Highway Patrol, Nevada State Police, and Arizona Department of Public Safety are joining forces for a Maximum Enforcement Period. The tri-state enforcement initiative begins at 6:01 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, and continues through 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 4.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit is proud to officially announce Deputy Ryan Greb and K9 Proton as our newest K9 team.

Deputy Greb has been with the Sheriff’s office for more than seven years, he is a SWAT team lead, and he’s a field training officer in the Patrol Division. His new partner, K9 Proton, is an 18-month old Belgian Malinois who’s fluent in Dutch. Proton specializes in drug detection, tracking, and apprehension.
