Big Brother and the Holding Company, Janis Joplin's original band, performs Sept. 16 in Carson City
If you've been enjoying the Brewery Art Center's presentation of the beginnings of psychedelic rock art and posters, there's an opportunity to see another piece of the era up close and live.
On Saturday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. in Carson City at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall inside the church, Big Brother and the Holding Company will be performing alongside Darby Gould of Jefferson Starship.
"Big Brother and The Holding Company are considered, along with the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane, the pioneers of the San Francisco Sound," Executive Director of the BAC, Spike McGuire said. "They are recognized in the history of rock and roll as the band that launched the career of the great Janis Joplin."
Big Brother and the Holding Company recorded “Cheap Thrills”, which many consider to be the definitive record of Janis's greatest singing.
Rolling Stone Magazine listed “Cheap Thrills” as one of the greatest albums of all time, and Big Brother's version of "Piece of My Heart" has been included in the Grammy Hall of Fame and the Library of Congress.
"Their energy, spirit and their story as a band define a time when music was at the center of a cultural revolution, yet their music is relevant and real and is still listened to and loved today," McGuire said.
Original members Peter Albin, bass and Dave Getz, drums — who have been playing together for 57 years — continue to bring this legendary music they created with Janis to audiences all over the world.
Darby Gould, formally with Jefferson Starship, will be singing the great Janis/Big Brother classics, 'Piece of My Heart'. 'Summertime', 'Down On Me', 'Ball and Chain', ‘Me & Bobby McGee’, ‘Mercedes Benz’ and many more.
Tickets are $30-$40 and can be purchased here.
