The Child Development Center at Western Nevada Community College plays an important role at the school and in our community. Rotary Club of Carson City members will learn about the center and its future at the club’s next meeting which takes place Tuesday, Jan. 31 at noon in the Brewery Arts Center’s Grand Ballroom. The public is invited to attend.

A 44-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the area of Winnie and Russet after allegedly crashing his car while intoxicated and in possession of a gun.

According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched to the area of Winnie and Russet on report of a drunk driver stuck on a snowbank.

Shane Shook defeated Hunter Mueller 191-133 to become the champion at the Northern Nevada Masters youth tournament last Sunday, January 22.

The tournament was held at Gold Dust West Bowling Center and was sponsored by the Carson Country U.S. Bowling Congress association.

Skylar (Sophia) Crittendon is an amazing student at Carson High School. She is both academically and artistically gifted.

Skylar currently has a 4.2 GPA and has taken Honors, AP and Jump Start classes. As an artist, she enjoys drawing and painting using acrylics. Neo-realism is her favorite painting style, and she draws or paints every day.

The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Jodi Hocking, Executive Director of Return Strong, a grassroots organization born in the heart of the pandemic by a group of women with incarcerated loved ones who came together to fight for transparency and accountability in Nevada's prisons.

Yerington Food Pantry volunteers

Healthy Communities Coalition’s Yerington Food Pantry has served people in the Yerington area since 2017. With the generosity of Cheryl Giomi, who leased her Bridge Street building to the nonprofit at no charge, the Pantry continually expanded its work to stop hunger.

The Carson City Planning Commission approved by a 4-3 vote on Wednesday the expansion of locations that cannabis dispensaries might operate within city limits.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will make the final decision on whether or not to approve the ordinance that would allow for more potential cannabis dispensary locations, specifically in the area along North Carson Street north of Winnie Lane and west of Hot Springs Road.

Carson High Speech and Debate earned several top spots from the tournament at Damonte Ranch Jan. 13-14, where more than 12 schools and 159 students participated in the competition.

An 18-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday for suspicion of five felony counts child endangerment, possession of an altered/removed serial number on a firearm and other offenses, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) announced that Nevada State College will receive $1, 218,626 to train school counselors, social workers, psychologists, and other mental health professionals to provide school-based mental health services in Nevada.

Senator Cortez Masto led the effort to include these funds in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act that was signed into law last year to address the acute shortage of mental health professionals in Nevada schools.

This six-year-old tabby lives up to his name once he’s comfortable enough to come out of his shell. Snuggles is handsome and quite photogenic and our staff learns more and more about him every day.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong issued the following information Wednesday morning into Tuesday night's shootings. A Lyon County teen remains hospitalized after being shot in the face. Three teenagers are in custody and the investigation remains active. The updated information is in the news release below:

On Tuesday evening at 7:03 p.m., Jan. 24, 2023, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office received 911 calls of a shooting actively taking place at the 3300 block of East Carmine Street in East Carson City. At 7:06, three minutes later, the Sheriff’s Office received reports of a gunshot victim in a vehicle located near the intersection of Sherman Lane and Concord Drive, approximately one-half mile away.

UPDATE: Three teenagers are in custody and the investigation remains active, according to Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong in a Wednesday morning news release.

UPDATE 9:55PM: Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong confirmed that both injured in Tuesday night's shooting are teenagers and that witnesses who have been detained are also juveniles from Carson City, Dayton and Lyon County. At this point in time there is not a suspect, the sheriff said.

UPDATE 8:33PM: Carson City Sheriff's Office have secured three different scenes in the areas of Carmine Street, Sherman Street and Airport Road, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. There are two victims of gunfire with one of the shootings happening in front of a house. The condition of those injured is unknown at this time.

A Carson City man arrested in December for alleged production of child pornography was booked Monday for an additional charge of possession of visual pornography of a child under 16, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.
