Nevada State Museum lecture Thursday in Carson City features the Frémont Cannon
The Nevada State Museum hosts monthly lectures on Nevada history on the fourth Thursday of every month. In January, the Frances Humphrey Lecture Series will showcase “The Frémont Cannon Resurfaces” by Dr. Gene Hattori, Ph.D., Curator of Anthropology.
The event will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2023, at the Nevada State Museum. Admission to the lecture is $10 for adults. Members of Nevada State Museum and children 17 and under are free.
The Nevada State Museum’s Frémont Cannon has been traveling for the past seven years with the Finding Frémont Exhibit in four museums in Oregon and Nevada. Curator Gene Hattori welcomes the cannon’s return with a public presentation on this rare U.S. Model of 1835 12-pound Mountain Howitzer and its controversial association with explorer Lieutenant John C. Frémont.
Between 1842 and 1844, Lieutenant John C. Frémont mapped and described the route of the Oregon Trail. His report of his explorations published the following year secured his worldwide fame as an explorer, scientist, and soldier.
Ignoring his written orders, he towed the Mountain Howitzer from St. Louis to Oregon territory. Eventually, his party abandoned it during their desperate wintertime search for a pass over the Sierra Nevada to Sutter’s Fort. This 187-year-old cannon is the model for the UNR-UNLV replica trophy.
Since 1993, the Nevada State Museum has honored educator and historian Frances Humphrey with a lecture series in her name. We are currently offering lectures in-person and via Zoom.
Pre-registration is recommended and required for Zoom call participants. Click here to register.
The museum is at 600 N. Carson St. in Carson City. Regular museum admission is $10 for adults and free for members and children ages 17 and younger.
