UPDATE: The man who died Saturday has been identified as 36-year-old Christopher John Nicholson of South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Nicholson was a member of the Heavenly Ski Patrol and had been working that day. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Washoe County Coroner’s Office is working to identify a cause of death, according to a DCSO news release.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — An employee with Heavenly Mountain Resort was involved in a serious accident Saturday, resulting in his death.

Distracted driving is a leading cause of crashes and injury to both drivers and pedestrians. The Carson City Sheriff's Office is working together with other Nevada law enforcement agencies to be on the lookout for distracted drivers.

Winterfest is here, and the theme, Carson's Got Game, is more than just a nice motto, it is a series of multiple physical board games, playground games, and video games. According to CHS physical education teacher and Leadership adviser Ann Britt, “the class color teachers will be playing a game of life-size Hungry Hippo during the assembly Jan. 17, and we will be doing a door decorating competition with judging taking place Jan. 21; the top three winners will receive a gift card to Starbucks.”

Partnership Carson City youth high school program participant Nancy Mejorado, 17, is creating a mock teenage bedroom for parents and community leaders to better know how to spot drugs among youth belongings.

The mock bedroom, which is Mejorado’s Carson High School senior project, opens to the public 2:30-7 p.m. Jan. 22-23 at Partnership’s main office, 1925 N. Carson St.

A 25-year-old Jackson, Missouri man was arrested in the 3100 block of N. Carson Street for felony grand larceny after allegedly stealing and selling a phone from a local hardware store.

According to the arrest, Kevin Deonte Nolan was arrested after deputies were dispatched to a local hardware store to follow up on an investigation regarding a stolen phone.

A two vehicle accident was reported Friday at 3:34 p.m. at the intersection of Koontz and S. Edmonds. One person was complaining of injury.

An injury accident was reported to dispatch at 2:05 p.m. Friday in front of Firehouse Subs on Highway 50.

First responders are enroute to the accident currently.

It’s reported that a child fell from a vehicle, but the child is reported to be fine.

UPDATE 3:42 p.m.: Search and Rescue and PCSO have called off the search and are confirming there are no further victims of the avalanche to be found. Cole Comstock, 34, of Blairsden, CA has been identified as the deceased in the avalanche that occurred at Alpine Meadows.

According to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), there is one confirmed fatality and a second victim with serious injuries following an avalanche at Alpine Meadows in Lake Tahoe.

The South Carson Complete Streets Project design is complete, Carson City Public Works and the project contractor, Sierra Nevada Construction, Inc., will be hosting a pre-construction meeting to present the anticipated construction schedule and the completed project design.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2020, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, in the Sierra Room, located at 851 E. William St., Carson City.

On Wednesday, January 15, 2020, at approximately 12:25 PM, NHP Troopers were dispatched to a serious injury crash involving a single vehicle at IR-80 and the Virginia Street off-ramp (Exit 13) in Reno.

Preliminary investigation shows a gray 2016 Ford Escape was traveling westbound on IR-80 in the far right travel lane approaching the Virginia Street off-ramp when its driver and sole occupant allowed the vehicle to exit the roadway to the right and enter the dirt area on the north side of the guardrail.

A 28-year-old Carson City woman and a 30-year-old Carson City man were arrested Thursday morning. The woman was arrested for battery with a deadly weapon, possession of a dangerous drug without a prescription, domestic battery first offense, and obstructing an officer; the man was arrested for possession of a dangerous drug without a prescription, and a contempt of court warrant.

The first winter snowstorm of 2020 has passed, and there shouldn’t be any more precipitation coming as the storm continues to move east.

The weather today will have a high of 38 and a low of 24, with partly sunny skies. The winds have also died down, with a breezy 4-5 mph being the top out for the day.

Due to winter related conditions, all schools in the Carson City School District will begin 2-hours later than their usual start time, Friday, Jan. 17, 2020.

All Pre-K and Early Childhood Carson City school classes, those include morning recreation programs, are canceled. Breakfast will not be served. Principals will adjust the school schedule for the shortened day. Educators and staff should arrive safely and as early as they are able, well before school is to begin on the shortened schedule.

In the chaos of jolting awake to the crunch of metal, Stacia Nepper was sure she saw her 2-year-old baby fly past her. She froze in panic.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. The Union will host a dining fundraiser for the Greenhouse Project on Friday, and artist Jakota Wass performs at Bella Vita Bistro. Carson City’s The Wheelhouse, which specializes in all things skating, scootering, bicycling and more, has moved their location to 1800 E. William Street, Suite No. 1, to be closer to the Mills Park Skate Park and more centrally located within town.

The Wheelhouse has always been heavily involved in the Carson City community, from hosting skate and scooter competitions to one-on-one training sessions with kids, all with the value of instilling confidence and camaraderie in mind.

At approximately 1:39 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, 2020, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office dispatched deputies to the Cardon Lane area of Yerington after receiving a 911 call from a subject who said his neighbor had just come to his house brandishing a handgun and threatening him with it.

Carson City’s theater company, Proscenium Players Inc., is bringing the female version of The Odd Couple to the BAC’s Black Box Theater from February 14-23 for two weekend’s worth of performances.

UPDATE: A credible tip surfaced Thursday afternoon regarding the suspect vehicle, a sheriff's office detective said. The vehicle is a tan or beige 2010-2012 Mercedes SUV, with dark tinted windows. The vehicle was without a front license plate and its back plate is possibly California. The vehicle circled the daycare parking lot multiple times, where the suspect then is believed to have parked across the street before entering the victim's vehicle.

UPDATE 2:30PM: There's an 8-vehicle pileup on Highway 50 West Spooner in the eastbound lane below Golf Club Drive. No injuries were reported. Another spinout related crash was reported near the pileup, also in the eastbound lane. Motorists are advised not to drive up the hill due to slick conditions.

A strong system moving into the region Thursday has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Storm Warning for Lake Tahoe and Sierra and a Winter Weather Advisory for the Carson City region.

Weather permitting, the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team will continue prescribed fire operations over the next several weeks in the Tahoe Basin.

I have had a lot of opportunity knock on my door lately. It seems from the moment I open my eyes in the morning, I am going non-stop on everything from my new radio show on KNVC (Business Therapy, Mondays and Wednesdays 7:30 to 8 a.m.) to the needs of a variety of companies. Honestly, it can get a little overwhelming. It’s overwhelming until I realize there a sure-fire cure for overwhelm — take one strategic action.

The National Endowment for the Arts recently announced Art Project Grants distributed to all 50 states, District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and Carson City, Reno and Las Vegas were the beneficiaries in Nevada.

The state of Nevada received three grants total for a an amount of $45,000. Of the grants, $10,000 went to the Carson City Symphony Association, Inc. to “support a series of concert performances featuring musical traditions of Central and South America.”

A Carson City man was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, a Carson City sheriff's report states.

Carson High School Senior Cade Crookshanks, 17, has been selected by the Nevada Section of the Society for Range Management to participate in the High School Youth Forum, a SRM sponsored youth activity held jointly during the 73 Annual SRM meeting. The meeting will be held in Denver, Colo., Feb. 16-20, 2020.
