Carson City deputies arrest man for selling stolen phone for $70, held on $10,000 bail
A 25-year-old Jackson, Missouri man was arrested in the 3100 block of N. Carson Street for felony grand larceny after allegedly stealing and selling a phone from a local hardware store.
According to the arrest, Kevin Deonte Nolan was arrested after deputies were dispatched to a local hardware store to follow up on an investigation regarding a stolen phone.
Deputies spoke with a manager, who said the suspects who work for an IT company would be arriving at the hardware store soon. The manager wanted the Sheriff’s Office to question the suspects regarding the stolen phone.
Deputies spoke with the owner of the IT company once they arrived at the store. Deputies informed the owner of the stolen phone and gave the suspects an opportunity to come forward about the theft.
The owner spoke with the suspects and returned to deputies and said one person said he had sold a phone with Kevin Nolan a few days before. Deputies spoke to the man who said he and Nolan had gone to another large department store to sell the phone at a kiosk.
The man said he had used his own ID card to sell the phone since Nolan did not have a valid ID. The owner got into contact with Nolan via phone, and Nolan said he had gone with the man to the store but hadn’t gone inside.
The next day, deputies were informed that the stolen phone had been identified at the department store in Gardnerville. Another picture showed a male subject with the man during the transaction, who was identified as Nolan.
Deputies located Kevin and the man at a hotel. The man declined to speak with deputies, but Nolan agreed to talk to them.
Deputies told Nolan they knew he was with the other man when the phone was sold, and asked him why the man had sold the phone. Nolan said his ID had expired, and so the other man used his ID to sell the phone.
Deputies asked Nolan what happened. Nolan said he saw a phone in front of the hardware store, picked it up and looked at it but put it back. Deputies asked Nolan where exactly in front of the store he found it, and he said it actually wasn’t in front of the store, it was in a hallway.
When asked what the hallway looked like, he changed his story again and said it wasn’t in the hallway, it was sitting on some items in an aisle. He said he then took the phone knowing it wasn’t his and went with the other man to sell the phone for $70. He said he had asked one of the owners for money to pay for medication, but they didn’t give him any, so he sold the phone in order to pay for his medicine.
He was taken into custody without incident.
Bail: $10,000
