CARSON CITY — Western Nevada Development District announced that after a national search, the Board has selected Christine Brandon as the organization’s new Executive Director. Brandon, a long time Carson City resident, was appointed to her new role on May 24, 2022.

The Annual Stewart Father’s Day Powwow was canceled last year due to COVID-19, but is returning this year along with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum.

The annual powwow is free and open to the public, and includes food vendors, competition dancing, arts and crafts vendors, and dry camping.

CARSON CITY — The 2022 Primary Election is just around the corner and so is the summer weather. As the days get warmer, more organized events will take place at Mills Park, including voting, that may make for crowded parking areas during polling hours.

Unsettled weather is expected for the Carson City area and Lake Tahoe region through the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend, with widespread breezy to windy conditions through Saturday and temperatures cooling to below normal, according to the National Weather Service.

Beginning Friday, May 27, Sand Harbor at Lake Tahoe will open at 7 a.m. to help ease traffic congestion on Highway 28. Visitors are advised to arrive at or after opening time. There is limited space to wait for the park to open. Vehicles parked on the shoulder or blocking the highway may receive a citation.

CARSON CITY — Fourteen Carson High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) recently attended and participated at the State Business Leadership Conference in Reno, where they walked away with 26 top 10 finishes in business career related events. Out of those 26 awards, nine students placed in the top four, which qualified them to participate at Nationals in Chicago, Ill., June 28 to July 3.

LAS VEGAS — The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust has granted $437,000 to Carson Valley Medical Center to purchase a general ultrasound, cardiac ultrasound and emergency bedside ultrasound system as part of a $4.2 million initiative to help rural, frontier and urban hospitals and health centers across Nevada provide better ultrasound imaging services. Funds will also support robust training opportunities to increase the number of sonographers in Nevada and provide continuing education.

Nevada's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5 percent in April 2022 which was unchanged from March 2022, according to the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s latest economic report.
