Stewart Father’s Day Powwow Returns with Museum Ribbon Cutting June 18-19
The Annual Stewart Father’s Day Powwow was canceled last year due to COVID-19, but is returning this year along with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum.
The annual powwow is free and open to the public, and includes food vendors, competition dancing, arts and crafts vendors, and dry camping.
This year, the powwow will take place June 18-19.
The ribbon cutting of the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum will take place on Saturday, June 18 at 10 a.m. on the main lawn of the center, located at 5500 E. Snyder Ave. in Carson City.
The museum opened in 2020, but closed multiple times due to issues surrounding COVID-19.
The Cultural Center and Museum occupies what was once the school’s administrative building.
Over $4.5 million in funding was utilized from the Nevada Legislature, along with the support of governors Brian Sandoval and Steve Sislolak, which were used for the renovations.
In June 2021, Gov. Sisolak signed into law three bills on the museum’s lawn that directly affected indigenous tribes and communities, including providing free tuition for native students, outlawing sundown sirens and racially offensive mascots, as well as transferring management of the museum back to the tribe.
Powwow Grand Entry Times are noon on Saturday and 11 a.m. on Sunday.
