Happy Wednesday, Carson City. It's going to be a beautiful day, and I know a way to make it even nicer: A brand new friend!

Carson City’s Pet of the Week is none other than Sasha, a 13-year-old Chow-Chow mixed breed.

On Jan. 27 Carson City Elks Lodge No. 2177 hosted a fundraiser for Night Off The Streets, Inc. warming shelter. Ticket sales and all proceeds from the silent auction and raffle garnered $7,411 from this worthwhile event.

This was augmented by a Community Investment Program (CIP) grant from the State and National Elks Foundation of $1,548. A local Elk donated an additional $52 to round the grant up to an even $1,600 check as shown in the picture. Total raised was $9,011.

A student housing revitalization project through Friends in Service Helping, that is currently taking shape on North Carson Street in Carson City, is extending a contribution campaign after successfully collecting $80,000 in matched donations.

City planners often make controversial decisions regarding our community’s land use. Rotary Club of Carson City members will learn how those decisions are made when Carson City Community Development Director Hope Sullivan joins the club meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Meet Tiny, with her big whiskers, white toes and fluffy tail, she is absolutely adorable. This 7-year-old short-haired tabby girl is a little hesitant around strangers, but incredibly sweet and loving once she is comfortable with you.

This 10-year-old pooch has been in our shelter since late November and is not only a staff favorite, but a member of the Lonely Hearts Club too.

Join us for our All In For Kids gala to help support the nearly 9,000 students from across Washoe County served by Communities In Schools (CIS). This event will feature success stories and showcase the wraparound support provided in 13 Washoe County Schools. The gala is the largest fundraiser of the year for CIS of Western Nevada which closes educational opportunity gaps for our students, empowering them to stay on track for a successful future.

As the Nevada State Museum prepares to celebrate another year sharing Nevada’s unique history, the Friends of the Museum are offering an introductory class for volunteers and tour guides at the Museum and Nevada State Capitol.

The next AAUW monthly meeting will be Feb. 7, 6 p.m. and feature Laura Yanez, Executive Director of NAMI/ Western Nevada who will present information about mental health needs and services, drawing information from caller data on public contact with the Warm Line and Teen Text Line.

NAMI is a nationwide program initially developed in Wisconsin in 1979. Its work includes advocacy, outreach, education, support, skills training, and stigma reduction for teens and adults.

On April 21, 2023, Carson High School will open its doors to any dad-daughter duos, or those who might be filling in as such, for its annual Father-Daughter Ball, a three-hour community-wide event, open to all ages. The theme for this year’s event is “An Enchanted Evening in Asia.”

Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church will host a cookie decorating as a fun and a family friendly event Sunday, Feb. 12, 2023, from 12:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. at 3680 U.S. Highway 395, Carson City.

Families and people of all ages are invited to Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church to enjoy a fun time decorating cookies for loved ones in honor of St. Valentine’s Day. People can arrive any time between 12:30 and 3:30 on February 12, which is the Sunday before this year’s St. Valentine’s Day.

Winterfest celebrations kicked off this afternoon with an assembly, and Carson High School was pleased to announce the student-elected candidates.

The week-long events beginning Monday, Jan. 30 through Saturday, Feb. 4, will feature day and evening activities the whole school may enjoy including dress-up days, movie nights, games, talent shows, karaoke, music and more.

Carson City Ward 4 Supervisor Lisa Schuette will begin holding a monthly Coffee with Lisa on Wednesday, February 8, from 7 to 8 am at the Cracker Box restaurant.

Everyone is welcome to come and discuss issues they care about.

Schuette will be holding the coffee gatherings on the second Wednesday of each month.

Skylar (Sophia) Crittendon is an amazing student at Carson High School. She is both academically and artistically gifted.

Skylar currently has a 4.2 GPA and has taken Honors, AP and Jump Start classes. As an artist, she enjoys drawing and painting using acrylics. Neo-realism is her favorite painting style, and she draws or paints every day.

ComputerCorps is an internationally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to providing access to computer technology and skills training for the under-served families, while eliminating electronic scrap (escrap) in our nations’ landfills.

This six-year-old tabby lives up to his name once he’s comfortable enough to come out of his shell. Snuggles is handsome and quite photogenic and our staff learns more and more about him every day.

The Nevada State Museum hosts monthly lectures on Nevada history on the fourth Thursday of every month. In January, the Frances Humphrey Lecture Series will showcase “The Frémont Cannon Resurfaces” by Dr. Gene Hattori, Ph.D., Curator of Anthropology.

The Nevada Department of Agriculture is seeking sponsors to provide meals to children through the federally funded Summer Food Service Program. SFSP ensures that students who depend on school meals have access to nutritious food when school is not in session.

College Parkway inside the Rotunda. This program will be on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023 at 6 p.m.

Join the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce as we celebrate the grand opening and ribbon cutting of the Odeon Saloon in historic downtown Dayton.

In 1961, Dayton and the Odeon became a hot spot of activity when the cast and crew of The Misfits came to town.

Need a ray of sunshine? Taboo is the cat for you. This super sweet short-haired tabby girl brightens up any room with her sunny, loving disposition and beautiful green eyes.

Taboo loves people and thrives on attention. She is super affectionate and would gladly sit on your lap and be petted and kissed all day long. She also likes to assist at the computer and “help” me type. Taboo is currently Catmandu’s greeter and she is very good at her job.
