Prescription drug roundups Saturday in Carson City, Lyon County
Prescription drug roundups will be held in Carson City, Dayton, Silver Springs and Fernley this Saturday, Sept. 25.
Bring your unused and expired prescription drugs to the drop-offs for proper disposal by the sheriff's office. Disposal protects the community and its water supply. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
Acceptable items include: Unused or expired prescription drugs, over-the-counter pills, prescription liquids, pet medications and syringes. The Lyon County roundup will not be accepting syringes or medical waste.
Carson City's roundup runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Click here for more information.
The drop points will be at:
Carson City
— SaveMart Supermarket; 3620 N. Carson Street
— Save Mart Supermarket, 3325 Highway 50
— SaveMart 4348 South Carson Street
Meanwhile, Lyon County residents are urged to safely dispose of their unused and expired prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Law officers will be on hand at each location to receive the drugs. Residents should prepare by searching through their medicine cabinets for medications that are not currently part of their doctor’s prescribed treatment or which have passed their expiration dates.
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, “prescription drugs can be as dangerous as street drugs. People can overdose on prescription narcotics as easily as heroin.” Prescription drugs are being misused and abused at alarming rates in the U.S., leading to cases of overdose, addiction, and accidental poisoning. Part of the problem is their ready availability in the home medicine cabinet, where they’re often kept long after they’re needed.
Why Should These Drugs Be Disposed Of? Removing unused prescriptions from households is one way of reducing the total amount of drugs in our communities. Left unattended in a medicine cabinet, the drugs can find their way into the hands of visitors or even family members who may misuse or sell them.
Why Not Just Flush Them? Recent studies by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have shown pharmaceutical drugs in the nation’s water supplies. This could be both from normal excretion routes and from flushing pills.
Why Not Just Take Them Back to the Pharmacy? The Controlled Substances Act (CSA) does not allow pharmacists to take back controlled substances.
How Does The Take-Back Work? Residents should simply bag up their unused drugs and bring them to one of the collection points. Both prescription medications and over the counter substances may be collected. This program is anonymous and all efforts will be made to protect the anonymity of individuals disposing of medications. No questions or requests for identification will be made.
Intravenous solutions, injectibles, syringes, or medical waste WILL NOT be accepted due to potential hazard posed by blood-borne pathogens.
If you can’t make it on Sept. 25, there are ways to safely dispose of drugs in Lyon County during the rest of the year. You can take them to the Lyon County Sheriff’s offices or the Yerington Police Department.
