Advocates to End Domestic Violence heads rural county list of state grant funds awards
The Nevada Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) has awarded a total of $3.7 million in grant funds from the state's Account for Aid for Victims of Domestic Violence to organizations statewide, including the Carson City-based Advocates to End Domestic Violence(AEDV), which topped the list of rural county recipients with a grant totaling $89,824.
Organizations in neighboring rural counties also made the list of 2018 grant recipients, including the Family Support Council of Douglas County, which received $82,894 in grant money, as well as Lyon County Alternatives to Living in a Violence Environment, awarded $88,364 in funds.
Nevada's Account for Aid for Victims of Domestic Violence is funded, in part, by state marriage license fees. These funds are also known as the Marriage License Funds.
Money generated by the account assists victims of domestic violence only within the state of Nevada and victims of sexual assault in Clark County.
When the grant program was initially adopted in 1981, the Marriage License Funds were given to respective county commissions, which then administered grant money locally. Today, the grant is administered through the Nevada DCFS.
“It is remarkable that in 1981 the Nevada Legislature understood the need to provide stable funding for services for victims of domestic violence," said Susan Meuschke, executive director of the Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence. "The fund they created in 1981 continues to ensure availability of life-saving services to this day.”
The Account for Aid for Victims of Domestic Violence provides funding to non-profit organizations that offer services exclusively for victims of domestic violence in Nevada, and a portion of the funds assist sexual assault victims in Clark County.
Allocation of the funds is set by Nevada Revised Statutes (NRS), which states that organizations granted must receive at least 15 percent of their money from sources other than the federal government, the state, any local government, or other public body or their instrumentalities. NRS 217.400 thru 217.475 provide DCFS with the eligibility criteria for the grant.
AEDV established Classy Seconds Thrift Shop, now located at 3590 Gordon Street alongside U.S. Highway 50 East in Carson City, about 20 years ago as a chief revenue generator for the shelter through retail sales.
AEDV hosts the annual Taste of Downtown, a regionally captivating food showcase drawing crowds of thousands to downtown Carson City each summer, as its signature fundraiser for the past quarter century.
The 25th annual Taste of Downtown is scheduled for next Saturday, July 21 from 5:30 p.m. to midnight in downtown Carson City.
State grant funds are awarded to agencies that primarily operate domestic violence shelters in Nevada. More than 92,000 victims received assistance through the grant during state fiscal year 2017.
AEDV, a 501(c)3 registered non-profit dedicated since 1979 to preventing domestic violence, has operated a 51-bed shelter since 1985 and provides supportive services to victims.
According to the AEDV web site, more than 150,000 nights of shelter over 450,000 meals have been provided to nearly 3,700 victims since 1985.
