AB227 is being considered in the Legislature that will create a loss of 4300 temporary and skilled workers jobs as stated by The American Staffing Association [ASA]. An unofficial poll among Private Employment Agencies (“PEAs”) that are Nevada businesses that are licensed and regulated by the Nevada Labor Commissioner, say it’s estimated that about 15% of them are Veterans.

CARSON CITY — The Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum announced Thursday it is reopening to the public on Tuesday, Jan. 19, the day after the nation celebrates Martin Luther King Day.

It was an eventful year around the Carson City region notwithstanding the limitations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's some notable stories that were not pandemic related that happened in 2020.

CARSON CITY — Nevada Supreme Court Justice Mark Gibbons will be retiring from the Nevada Supreme Court in January 2021, capping a nearly 24-year career as a member of Nevada’s judiciary. Justice Gibbons was first elected to the Nevada Supreme Court in 2002, making him the longest serving of the high court’s current seven members.

Tensions were high Saturday in downtown Carson City in front of the Nevada Legislature building as a “Stop the Steal” rally attracted both a group of people affiliated with the Proud Boys, as well as an armed militia.

To say 2020 was a crazy and eventful year would be an understatement. I think just about everyone can agree on that. But in the midst of a pandemic, a summer of protests, and an election year that shattered records, (pick a category, any catagory) it seems nevadans also found alot to disagree on. It was easy to see if one attended any of these protests.

Former Carson City Clerk-Recorder Alan Glover, who served nearly 40 years of public service including elected seats in the Nevada Legislature, died on Monday. According to the Nevada Appeal he died of pneumonia caused by a COVID-19 infection.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting on Monday, Nov. 16 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Bob Boldrick Theater of the Carson City Community Center to certify election results.

Almost 3 million more people voted for Hillary Clinton than for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, yet it is Trump’s pardon that saves a Thanksgiving turkey's life and whose signature on an executive order can change American lives in an instant.

UPDATE: On Wednesday, by executive order, Governor Steve Sisolak ordered the flags of the United States and the State of Nevada to be flown at half-staff at the State Capitol and State public buildings and grounds from sunrise until sunset on Thursday, October 29, 2020 as a mark of solemn respect and in remembrance of Carson City Mayor and native Nevadan Robert “Bob” Crowell, whose memorial is being held Thursday.

The Nevada Builders Alliance, owner of the Bank Saloon, has requested assistance by the Brewery Arts Center to solicit proposals from local artists to beautify the electric transformer box located at their property on the corner of Carson and 5th streets. The owners of the property are looking for designs that will go with the established aesthetic of both inside and outside of the bank saloon.

Six Carson City and one Lyon County project are among 16 statewide recipients of Community Development Block Grant funding through a federal program administered by the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development, officials announced Monday.

Mailers recently sent by the U.S Postal Service (USPS) make two incorrect recommendations to Nevada voters, including direction to request a mail-in ballot at least 15 days before Election Day and to add a postage stamp.

The next Carson City Board of Supervisors meeting will be held on Thursday, Sept. 17 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street.

Items for discussion include new shade structures in the downtown area, grant funding for fuel reduction, surplus city funding, and more.

Carson City Mayor, attorney and Vietnam veteran Robert L. "Bob" Crowell died overnight. He was 74.

Robert L. "Bob" Crowell was a native Nevadan, born in the mining town of Tonopah and raised in Carson City. An attorney by profession, Bob was a Vietnam Veteran and retired Navy Captain. He was elected Mayor of Carson City in 2008 and assumed his duties as Mayor on January 5, 2009. He was re-elected in 2012 and 2016. Prior to being elected Mayor, Bob served 11 years on the Carson City School Board of Trustees.

The upcoming 2020 General Election will be a first in the country's history, as it will be a primarily mail-in only election. There has been many sources of misinformation regarding how the election will work, and the Nevada Secretary of State has provided a Myths and Facts sheet to help dispel some of the rumors.

CARSON CITY —The Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development is partnering with StartUpNV, Entrepreneur’s Assembly, Northeastern Nevada Regional Development Authority, business leaders, and other government entities, in a new statewide initiative to foster entrepreneurship in Nevada’s smaller cities and towns.

A group of protesters gathered Wednesday in front of the Nevada State Legislature in Carson City to raise awareness about child trafficking and sex crimes against children.

Nevada Builders Alliance, owner of the Bank Saloon building in Carson City, have announced that Mangia Tutto owner Richard Bragiel will be the new operator of the historic location.

The bar, which is scheduled to open in October 2020, has undergone extensive renovations since it was purchased by the Builders Alliance in 2018. Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak issued a proclamation on Wednesday to formally name racism as a public health crisis. Given Nevada’s diverse population as a minority, majority state, this call to action raises awareness so Nevada does not perpetuate poor health outcomes due to systemic racism during and after the pandemic.

President Donald Trump’s campaign has sued Nevada over a contentious bill recently approved in the ongoing special session of the Nevada Legislature that expands mail-in voting for the 2020 general election, saying it would make voter fraud “inevitable.”

To accommodate a highly anticipated community mural art project, the Tahoe East Shore Trail will be temporarily closed to public access between the Tunnel Creek Café and Sand Harbor all day on Tuesday, August 4, as well as Wednesday, August 5 through Friday, August 7, after 8:00 p.m.

Gov. Steve Sisolak is rolling back orders to close bars in three rural counties but keeping closure orders in place in Las Vegas and Reno, while signaling a new emphasis on interventions that are narrowly tailored to noncompliant businesses and hotspot regions rather than entire industries.

Nevada Builders Alliance, the state’s largest construction trade association, has partnered with Heritage Bank of Nevada to complete a renovation of the historic building, formerly Jack’s Bar, in downtown Carson City.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — The Stewart Indian School Cultural Center & Museum will reopen to the public on Monday, July 20, thanks to a generous donation from the family of a former Stewart Indian School principal. Opened in January and closed to the public in March because of the current health crisis, the Cultural Center faced severe budget cuts.

Lawmakers began the task of filling the $1.2 billion hole in the state’s budget on Wednesday as they kicked off their special session with a litany of budget and agency briefings throughout the day.

Nevada lawmakers will convene on Wednesday morning for the first time since mid-2019 for what is expected to be a painful special session cutting $1.2 billion out of the state’s budget.
