The Brewery Arts Center Hosts We Rock Music Program
The Brewery Arts Center Hosts We Rock Music Program-
Free Concert November 14
After-School Program Begins December 1
Reno Rock Camp (now known as We Rock, a non-profit organization) is a great year-round music program for children between the ages of 8 and 20 who want to add a little rock to their days. In conjunction with The Brewery Arts Center, We Rock Camp will be part of an ongoing music program every Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. starting December 1, 2015. To kick this event off We Rock and the Brewery Arts Center are presenting a Free Concert on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 7:00 p.m. in the MHJ Black Box Theater at the Brewery Arts Center, 49 W. King Street, Carson City.
We Rock programs empower young people to build the confidence and skills to experience a meaningful and successful life through music. The music program develops skills that are necessary in the workplace. It focuses on “doing,” as opposed to just observing, and teaches students how to perform, literally, anywhere in the world. Director Michael Hill said, “We motivate our kids! In the music classroom, students learn to better communicate and cooperate with one another.”
“Reno Rock Camp is an incredible concept for the youth,” said Dave Berry, part of the band Jelly Bread and supporter of We Rock programs. “I wish this was around when I was a kid! A program to build and encourage creativity in music? Yes, yes and yes!”
In a group instructional setting, kids learn chord driven songs from the Rock Manual and take on the role of guitarist, bassist, drummer, keyboardist, vocalist, or mixer. The kids are organized in bands and have a selection of songs to choose from to learn. They receive instruction for their chosen instrument and then break into their bands to rehearse the music. They also learn the business basics of being in a band, including performance setup and breakdown, and sound checks. At the end of the sessions, the bands perform for their friends and family and the community. We Rock has multiple opportunities for performance and have played at Hot August Nights, Street Vibrations, Nevada Day Parade, Jazz & Beyond, Circus Circus, Ace’s Stratum, Big Horns, and Sky Tavern. They had over 35 performances in 2015.
