Three Washoe County Libraries may be closed
In an effort to sop up a small lake of budgetary red ink, the Washoe County Commission and the Washoe County Board of Trustees are aiming their sites on closing up to three libraries in the county. Highest on the list appears to be the North Valleys Library.
The Library Board will make a final decision March 17th on whether to shutter North Valleys, the Downtown Library or the Sierra View Library or all three.
Reports say that the Trustees seem more inclined to shut down the Sierra View Library instead of the downtown Reno library because more funds would be saved by cancelling Sierra View’s lease. In defense of the downtown Library, Trustees say the downtown library serves many businesses, low income patrons and the homeless. They add that the North Valleys Library could be replaced by a smaller library with 10% of the space in the North Valleys Regional Park community building.
