Heading into the first day of the work week and the first Monday in August, there's continued sunshine and seasonable daytime high temperatures ahead. Vincent Solis, president of Western Nevada College, will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon. A life-long educator with more than 25 years of service in higher education, Dr. Solis began his tenure at WNC on July 1, 2018. A visionary leader and inspirational speaker, his presentation is a must-see for anyone interested in the crucial role higher education will play in the rapidly changing economy of the 21st century.

Hot August Nights, outdoor concerts, park history walks and more: Carson City region in store for eventful weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days, including Hot August Nights Kickoff Rallies in Virginia City, history walks at Mormon Station Park, pickleball at the Carson City MAC, concerts at the Brewery Arts Center and TJ’s Corral, a Muscle Powered Sunday morning bike ride and more!

King Arthur, 'Superhuman' presentations featured in Carson City at WNC observatory

A night of fact or fiction is coming to Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory in Carson City. Mike Thomas will provide his take on the legitimacy of the “Legend of King Arthur” on Friday, Aug. 2 at the observatory.

Speaking of “Superhumans,” a night later on Saturday, Aug. 3, Thomas will kick off the observatory’s star party with a slide show presentation of a variety of real people who have abilities who can only be described as “super.”

Heading into the last day of the month, July 31, 2019 and we should note it has been a pretty good summer so far weather wise, without much in the way of extreme heat. But as they say here in the Silver State, wait 15 minutes and it is bound to change. Davis Observatory, morning and evening hikes, a Capital City youth fall baseball meeting, a ladies bike ride, a Relay for Life fundraiser at Firehouse Subs, archery at Centennial Park, art showings and more. UPDATE: There's a star party late Monday night into Tuesday morning hosted by Carson City Parks and Recreation and Open Space. For summer’s most visible meteor showers, join the Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space Department at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory for some late night, educational fun. No pre-registration necessary. Please wear close-toed shoes and bring water for night hiking from the Observatory. Head lamps and flashlights are allowed. Parking at the Observatory can be found at 2699 Vanpatten Ave, Carson City. Please call (775) 281-7711 with any questions. This upcoming Monday is the Aquariids Viewing Party starting at 12:00 a.m. Tuesday (technically Monday night).

WNC to offer coding bootcamp for teens beginning Monday

Continuing Education at Western Nevada College is offering a brand-new five-day coding boot camp program designed for middle and high school students from Monday, July 29 through Aug. 2. The course is offered in partnership with Alphalancers, LLC, a web design and development company based in Reno.

My Thousand Words teaches Book Art Jewelry

Come and learn how to make book art jewelry from the artists of My Thousand Words, Rachael and Debbie Lambin. There are two classes offered, pick which one you like. Hope to see you!

The events are Friday, July 26 from 6:30 to 830 p.m. and Saturday, July 27, 2-4pm at Western Nevada College.

Students will be learning to make jewelry from books and magazines and enjoying wearing beautiful recycled jewelry that doesn't look like it is recycled at all.

This 5 day program is designed for middle- and high-school students, ages 12-17. It will provide an introduction to coding, with a focus on HTML. Students will complete a coding project by the end of the week, and will receive a certificate of completion.
