Events around Carson City for Wednesday, July 31
Heading into the last day of the month, July 31, 2019 and we should note it has been a pretty good summer so far weather wise, without much in the way of extreme heat. But as they say here in the Silver State, wait 15 minutes and it is bound to change. On tap Wednesday, there's a preserving family history workshop hosted by the Nevada State Library and Archives, art showings, Wheeled Food Wednesday at the Brewery Arts Center and more. Enjoy.
Do you have an event or happening you'd like people to know about? Tell us about it by clicking here, filling out the details and we'll tell Carson City area readers about your event or happening. Not seeing your event you wish to promote? You can also submit the relevant information, also known as the "5Ws and How” to editor@carsonow.org. We will update this calendar as submissions are made.
Here's what's happening Wednesday:
— Nevada State Archives to host 'Preserving Family History' workshop. 9 a.m. Attention family historians and genealogists: The Nevada State Archives is holding a “Preserving Family History” workshop on July 31, 2019 from 9 a.m. to noon. This will be a basic family photo and document preservation workshop that will include a few hands-on activities. This is an RVSP event. Contact Cynthia Laframboise, Nevada State Archives Manager, at claframboise@admin.nv.gov or 775-684-3319 to check if the event has been booked.
— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'New Crop 2019' exhibit. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "New Crop 2019", by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sculptor Mark Combs gives viewers two approaches to his metalwork. His earlier distressed metal car-part sculptures are ornamented with soldered rods and bolts reflecting a ruptured system both socially and figuratively. His carefully hammered bone pieces came into shape after hours of forging as a nod to death and celebrations of life. Photographer Frances Melhop documents aging rural structures with classic color photography. In Vanish, her printed enlargements of unnamed 19th century portraits on silk are elevated to fly across our vision like fleeting memories.
— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Fast Lane, Slow Bake. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) presents an exhibition, "Fast Lane/Slow Bake" by artists Cyndy Brenneman and Tom Drakulich. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings or by appointment. For Sierra Room access visit the Carson City Meetings and Events page or call 775-283-7421. Visit the CCAI website for more information.
— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Graphically Defined. 8 to 5 p.m. Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) is delighted to present Graphically Defined, a group exhibition of work by seventeen Western Nevada College students. This exhibit includes a wide variety of art including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting and photography that shows the diversity of the students’ creativity. The Business Resource Innovation Center (BRIC) is open Monday through Friday 8:00-12:00 p.m. and 1:00-4:00 p.m.
— Open Studio Painting at the Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. Work on your own paintings from subject matter you chose for yourself. The instructor will provide one on one instruction throughout the class. Students may use oil, acrylic, or watercolor paint. Dry media is also welcome. Bring your own supplies and source materials (such as photographs or drawings you wish to paint). This in an open enrollment drop in class so there is no need to enroll in advance. Classes: 9:00-12:00 or 12:30-3:30. $25 per session or $40 for the day, payment made to instructor. For more details contact the Brewery Arts Center here or by calling 883-1976.
