Sassabration, Car Shows, Markets and more: events for Saturday, July 13
Good morning Carson City and happy Saturday! Today we’ve got a packed day of activities, including Carson City’s Proudest Pride event, Sassabration! In addition, we’ve got the Capital City Kid’s Triathlon, the farmers market, a Carson Street car show, and more!

Saturday, July 13
— Capital City Kid's Triathlon. 7:30 to 11 a.m. at the Carson City Aquatic Facility, 841 N. Roop Street. This race is the perfect introduction to the world of triathlon for children of all ages. The aim of the game is smiles and competition. Swim at Carson City’s indoor Olympic-sized pool, and bike and run in iconic Mills Park. Free training for the triathlon on Saturday, June 29th & July 6th from 8-9 am at the Carson Aquatic Facility. More information about age group distances or event registration is available online.
— Flying Pig Indoor Flea Market at Fuji Park. 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall, 601 Old Clear Creek Rd. Come on down to the big building at Fuji Park on July 13-14 and meet some great vendors selling antiques, arts, crafts, jewelry and so much more. Always a fun time at the market. Open Saturday From 8-4 and Sunday, 9-4. Located on Old Clear Creek Rd in Carson City. Admission is $1 for adults and kids under 18 free. — Carson Rifle and Pistol Club Rifle Match. 8 a.m. at the Carson Rifle and Pistol Range. The Carson Rifle and Pistol Club will hold two shooting events on Saturday, July 13th at the Carson Rifle and Pistol Range. The first match will be a NRA High Power Rifle match, followed by a Bullseye Pistol match. The NRA High Power Rifle match is a 100 yard rifle match. The course of fire is 50 shots in four stages, from standing, sitting/kneeling and prone positions, in slow and rapid fire. This match is intended for the AR15 in its various versions (iron sights or scoped, rifle or carbine), but similar type rifles (AR10 or M1A for example) are acceptable as well. This is an NRA approved match and the scores can be reported to the NRA, which is part of obtaining an NRA classification.
— Fresh and Bountiful: Carson City Farmers Market returns this Saturday. 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd and Curry St. in Carson City. Enjoy fresh-picked produce, local meats, fresh flowers, artisan baked goods, jams, honey, crafts, live music and Carson City’s smiling faces.This week at the market you can enjoy music by Ricky D., stop by the kids' booth to make your own market bag, we have all the supplies for you. We are excited to see you all again this year.
— Carson City Fishing Club hosting Introductory Fly-Fishing Academy. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Ormsby Room at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, 911 E. Musser Street. The Carson Fly Fishing Club is hosting an Introductory Fly-Fishing Academy Friday, July 12 in the Ormsby Room at the Sheriff's Office. The purpose of the class is to learn the basic techniques of fly fishing. No experience necessary.
— Muscle Powered hike set for Davis Creek Park. 9 to 11 a.m. at 3620 N. Carson Street. Second Saturday Easy Hike, Davis Creek park, near Bowers Mansion. Please join Muscle Powered as we hike the Discovery Trail at Davis Creek Regional Park located off of old highway 395 near Bowers Mansion. 25 Davis Creek Road, Washoe Valley, NV. On this hike, we will explore the transition zone between the high desert and the Sierra Nevada Mountains. See first hand the changes in the ecology that surrounds us as we move between the Great Basin and the Sierras. Restrooms are available. Hike distance will be approximately 2 miles, depending on trail conditions. Water and closed-toes shoes are REQUIRED. Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles are recommended.
— Geology hike at Kings Canyon Trailhead. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Learn about the formation of the Sierra Nevada from Geologist Tom Gray, on this free hike, in one of the most beautiful areas in Carson City! Meet at the trailhead, west end of King St. and be prepared for a moderate elevation gain on this 2 mile loop. Be sure to wear closed-toed shoes, bring water & sun protection. See you there! — Carson City Downtown Revival Car Show. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in downtown Carson City, 101 N. Carson Street. This show has no class but sure is picky! All makes and models are welcome, numerous trophies will be presented to participants. All proceeds benefit local charities and Veterans Guest House. This event includes music, a poker walk, a scavenger hung and a goodie bag for the first 200 attendees. — Train to Virginia City from Carson City. Event takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road. Prices for the ride range from $25-$55. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mill on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. Departing from Carson City’s Eastgate Depot, the 24-mile round-trip tour includes a fun 3.5-hour stopover in historic Virginia City, where you can stroll the boardwalks and explore restaurants, shops, saloons, museums, mines and more. — Vintage steam train in Virginia City. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Virginia and Truckee Depot, 166 F Street. Rediscover Nevada’s rich history in mining and mills on the V&T Carson City-Virginia City route as you meander through tunnels, canyons and mining towns aboard a restored 1914 Pullman coach led by a 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 steam locomotive. This relaxing, all-day train excursion is fully narrated with historical facts and anecdotes. — Redgrass Americana Festival in Virginia City. 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the Red Dog Saloon, 76 N. C Street. Redgrass 2019 is in its inaugural year featuring shades and roots of Americana. Catch acts at Ruby’s Amphitheater, Red Dog Saloon and Canvas Cafe July 12 and 13. Throughout the weekend hear music ranging from country, roots-rock to bluegrass and Americana. This is an experience you won’t want to miss.
— Mark McLaughlin to speak at Dangberg Home Ranch in Minden. 10 a.m. at 1450 State Route Hwy. 88. Mark McLaughlin is an award-winning, nationally published author, professional speaker and photographer with seven books and more than 750 articles in print. He will be speaking about “Lake Tahoe and the Comstock Era” on Saturday, July 13th. Please bring your own seating for all events. No dogs at events; legitimate service animals only. The park is located at 1450 Hwy 88, ¼ mile north of the Carson Valley Veterinary Hospital.
— Guided tours of the Nevada State Capitol. Two separate tours will take place at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. every Saturday in Carson City. Tours typically take an hour and include both the exterior of the building, nearby memorials as well as the interior of the building. Tours are available for up to 20 people on a first-come, first-served basis. The building includes numerous historic artifacts that range from portraits of past Nevada governors to sculptures to historical items showcased during Nevada’s Sesquicentennial celebration. The Capitol remains open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guided tours of up to 20 people can be arranged in advance by calling the Nevada State Museum’s Education Program at 775-687-4810, ext. 237.
— Sassabration parade kicks off in Carson City. 12 to 9 p.m. Come on out and celebrate the 5th Annual Sassabration 2019 fundraiser! The event will kick off with a parade starting at the Brewery Arts Center and ending at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint, Carson Hot Springs and Shoe Tree Brewing Company! 2 Broke Kings will appear in concert at Carson Hot Springs. Event activities include live music, performance artists, food, vendors, and free admittance to the Carson Hot Springs pool (from 12:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.) We are raising money this year for: PFLAG Carson City Region, the Ron Wood Family Resource Center and Transgender Alliance Group (TAG) For more information please call 775-884-4471 or send an email to: sassabration@gmail.com
— Saturday Beginning Wheel Throwing at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 1 to 4 p.m. at 1215 S. Carson St. in Carson City. The Ogres of Ogres-Holm introduce you to clay in this 6-week open start class, including open studio time, is designed to get you started. It’s a great way to relax on a Saturday afternoon. $175 for 6 weekly sessions or $45 drop ins.
— History Talk: Braving the California Trail through Nevada. 1 to 1:30 p.m. at Mormon Station Park. For many emigrants who braved the California Trail in the mid-1800s, the segment through Nevada was the most hated and feared portion of the entire journey. A park interpreter will discuss what made travel through the Great Basin of Nevada so arduous for wagon trains, and will also explore topics such as the forty-mile desert, the Humboldt River and the legend of the Buenaventura River.
— Lego club at the Carson City Library. 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop Street. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times.
— Carson Mall Wine Walk returns this Saturday. 2 to 6 p.m. at 1227 S. Carson Street. Come sip and shop at the Carson Mall this Saturday, July 13 from 2 to 6 p.m. Carson Mall Wine Walks are held on the second Saturday of the Month. New walkers pay $10 and returning walkers pay $5. You will receive a wine glass which is yours to keep! Eleven stores will have wine for you to taste while you browse the mall. There will also be a poker walk. — Under the Big Top at the Carson City Community Center. 2 to 4:30 p.m. at 851 E. William Street. Tickets for Under the Big Top, the 2019 circus-themed, multi-generational production of the Senior Follies are now available for show dates July 12-14. Tickets are $10 each may be purchased at the Carson City Senior Center online or at the door an hour before the performance at the Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street, Carson City. Show times are 7 p.m. on Friday, July 12, 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 13 and 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 14. Children aged four and under are admitted for free.
— Toast of the Canyon Train in Virginia City. 5 to 7 p.m. at the Eastgate Depot, 4650 Eastgate Sliding Rd. Journey into the Carson River Canyon on an intimate experience, perfect for date night. Enjoy white wine and appetizers as you travel on a 45-minute trip south of Carson City’s Eastgate Depot. The ride is filled with scenic views of the Carson River and the canyon walls as they echo the sounds of the train whistle. The experience is complete when the “Iron Horse” steams by the passenger cars to reattach to the train to pull it back up out of the canyon.
— Live music at Glen Eagles Restaurant. 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 3700 N. Carson St., Carson City. Enjoy live music that is sure to make you get up and dance every Wednesday through Saturday starting at 6:30 to 9 p.m.
— Levitt AMP Carson City: The Mother Hips presented by the Change Companies. 7 to 10 p.m. at the Change Companies Outdoor Amphitheater, 449 W. King Street. In 1990, Tim Bluhm and Greg Loiacono of the Mother Hips found themselves living in the same house, teaching one another guitar chords. In 1993, they released their debut album, and twenty-five years later, in 2018, The Mother Hips releases their most ambitions album: “Chorus.” they showed that the longstanding rock band could still easily create new, unconventional, and meaningful music for their listeners. The guitarist and vocalist for the band, Tim Bluhm, explains that making music meaningful is important to him: “I'm trying to make music that has a spiritual aspect…an emotional experience that you might not even know is happening because it's surrounded by a loud rock band.”
— Carson City Ghost Walk returns on Saturday. 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the McFadden Plaza, 310 S. Carson St. For the 27th year, the spookiest historical tour of the capital city is returning this Saturday, June 1 with the Carson City Ghost Walk. The Carson City Ghost Walk is a seasonal historical tour of Carson City’s west side, a walking history lesson with a touch of the supernatural. Some of the stops on the tour include the Bliss Mansion, the Ferris Mansion, the Governor’s Mansion, and the Rinckel Mansion.
— Saturday Night Star Party at WNC. 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Jack C. Davis Observatory. The Jack C Davis Observatory hosts free star parties on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month year round, starting at 7:30 p.m. (except when there is snow on the roads). The evening starts with a lecture on one of numerous topics and concludes with guided star viewing by one of our astronomers. Mike Thomas lectures 2nd Saturdays and Dr. Tom Herring lectures on 4th Saturdays.
— Carson Comedy Club at the Carson Nugget. 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at 507 N. Carson St. Live Comedy every Friday and Saturday night at the Carson Nugget! Doors open at 7:15 p.m. Purchase tickets at the Winner's Club or online.
— Always Patsy Cline show in Minden. 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the CVIC Hall, 1602 Esmeralda Ave. Always… Patsy Cline is based on the true story of Patsy Cline’s friendship with Louise Seger; her number one fan. Louise narrates the story of how she met Patsy and the friendship that continued throughout Patsy’s short-lived life and career. The show is filled with everyone’s favorite songs sung by Carson Valley’s own; the talented local singer-songwriter Krista Jenkins.
Sunday, July 14
— Muscle Powered Sunday Bicycle Ride. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Rd. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. Participants will also tour park structures that are normally closed to the public.
