UPDATE 2:50PM: A single vehicle crash on Friday and an accident involving a pedestrian on Saturday resulted in the deaths of an elderly Carson City woman and a Reno resident, authorities said Monday.

A 77-year-old Wisconsin woman died Tuesday morning in a ski accident at Heavenly Mountain Resort, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Kathryn Strangman of Madison died of injuries after ski patrol had attempted CPR at Heavenly's Boulder Lodge on the Nevada side. She had struck a tree while skiing, said DCSO Sgt. Pat Brooks. The sheriff's office was contacted at 11:44 a.m. Tuesday.

An autopsy is scheduled and the accident is under investigation.

UPDATE: 11:48PM: At least one person inside an apartment was injured after being struck by a vehicle the caused a gas leak in the 600 block of Old Hot Spring Road. The crash forced the evacuation of 15 to 20 people before the broken gas lines were sealed.
The male adult victim was taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries, said Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Scott McDaniel.

The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified the man who died after a vehicle chase that resulted in a crash of a stolen pickup at the Carson City Airport on Thursday.

An 18-year-old Carson City man died in a pedestrian crash early Monday morning on I-580 in Washoe Valley after being struck in the northbound lane, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

It was only his second outing, but Western Nevada College sophomore Matt Young looked like a pitcher in midseason form Friday.

Young fired six scoreless innings and struck out 10 as Western Nevada College of Carson City defeated Cochise, 5-2, in the opening game of a nonconference baseball doubleheader in Henderson.

"It was textbook pitching today by Matt and (catcher) Tim," said WNC coach D.J. Whittemore. "The big difference for him was commanding the strike zone with the fastball. That puts him in counts where he can dictate."

Allowing just one hit through the first six innings, Western Nevada College could have expected to hold a lead against 13th-ranked Cochise on Thursday in Henderson.

Not so, as the Apaches used some aggressive baserunning to build a two-run advantage. But one swing of DJ Peters' bat swung the momentum in the Wildcats' favor in the seventh inning, driving WNC of Carson City to a 6-4 nonconference victory in the first of four games between the clubs.

Peters' laser shot over the left-field fence for a three-run homer completed the scoring, helping the Wildcats end a two-game losing streak.

A Carson City man is in custody after a hit and run pedestrian crash last week on Highway 50 and Brown Street that resulted in the death of the victim, said Carson City sheriff Ken Furlong.

Juan Pablo Rios, 37, was charged with felony failure to stop at the scene of an accident involving personal Injury or death, a category B felony. Bail was set at $50,000. Rios was booked Tuesday into the Carson City Jail. The victim, Gustova Garcia-Valdes, 52, died as a result of injuries.

A day after battering the South Mountain pitching staff for 18 hits and 15 runs, Western Nevada College struggled to put the ball in play on a chilly day in Phoenix.

Justin Wick no-hit the Wildcats into the fifth inning and WNC hitters fanned 11 times as the Cougars held on to win the nonconference baseball game 5-3 on Monday.

An Amador County, Calif., man has been identified as the victim who died after being shot Saturday night at a South Lake Tahoe lodge. The suspects in the shooting remain at large, according to South Lake Tahoe police.

Jesus Garcia-Manriquez, 18, and Allen Garcia-Manriquez, 19, were booked into Carson City Jail on charges of principal to murder in the shooting death of Grant Watkins, 18, of Carson City.

UPDATE 641AM: The investigation into the early Monday morning shooting that left one person dead during an apparent drug transaction continues with detectives working all angles in the investigation, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. He reports the following details:

A 26-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Saturday morning after he allegedly fired a gun inside an East Long Street apartment after an argument with his girlfriend, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

A 25-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Sunday after allegedly throwing chunks of ice and other objects at vehicles causing property damage, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said. A legislative police officer who helped detain the man before deputies arrived suffered a broken hand.

A woman was injured in a pedestrian accident that happened Thursday afternoon in Stateline at Lake Tahoe, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

The victim, Madeleine Cass, was found underneath a Toyota pickup driven by Charles Scholfield, when deputies arrived at the scene, in the area of Ponderosa Drive, said DCSO Sgt. Pat Brooks.

Diane McCoy, director of operations for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada, shut the doors of the van that was overflowing with bags and cartons of gifts for the Club’s annual Adopt-a-Family Christmas drive, donated by the Ridge Tahoe EAGLES employees group.

She went back inside to thank the donors, and found she had missed several more boxes full of cleaning supplies, pots and pans, dishes, laundry detergent and gift cards for local grocery stores.

A Gardnerville man was jailed Tuesday after a shotgun round went through the wall of a duplex, causing injury to two people in an adjacent unit, a Douglas County Sheriff's Office sergeant said.

A 65-year-old Reno man has been identified as the victim of a single vehicle fatal crash that happened Monday afternoon on I-580 freeway northbound near the Glendale on-ramp, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. A passenger was also injured.

Bradford W. Lipke died at the scene of the accident, reported to NHP at 12:30 p.m. His wife, passenger MaryAnne Lipke, 57, was taken to Renown Regional Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries, said Trooper Dave Gibson.

A Gardnerville woman died Friday in a three vehicle crash at the intersection of State Route 88 and Mottsville Lane. A crash earlier in the day also sent three people to the hospital, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Janis Hill, 64, died at the scene of the crash. A 22-year-old Carson City woman, Holly Ducoing, was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries, said NHP Trooper Duncan Dauber. The crash was reported at 6:28 p.m.

A 46-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday in the 1800 block of North Edmonds Drive on a felony charge of battery with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor domestic battery after allegedly hitting his brother with a board during a fight, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

A 24-year-old man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of felony possession of methamphetamine and misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and petit larceny after allegedly stealing merchandise from a local business, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Two men were arrested on felony charges Saturday after each gave officers false identification to avoid being arrested, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

A 39-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Saturday, 12:08 a.m. in the 1000 block of South Minnesota Street on misdemeanor suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and hit and run causing an accident.

As many of you have noticed we have an abundance of deer in the area and with winter weather soon upon us we will all be dealing with slick roadways and icy conditions. Already several deer have been struck by vehicles with some not surviving their injuries and others limping off into the surrounding neighborhoods.

Earlier this year I wrote about the no turn on red arrow signs which had been erected at Fairview Drive and Carson Street for northbound vehicles that are turning onto Fairview Drive and continuing towards Interstate 580 (I-580).
