Carson City sheriff’s arrest log: Man jailed after throwing ice chunks at cars, officer injured

A 25-year-old Carson City man was arrested early Sunday after allegedly throwing chunks of ice and other objects at vehicles causing property damage, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said. A legislative police officer who helped detain the man before deputies arrived suffered a broken hand.

Austin Thomas Sears was arrested Sunday, 7:04 a.m. in the area of Third and Stewart streets on felony and misdemeanor charges of property destruction and battery. According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatch to the area regarding a man who was seen throwing objects at passing vehicles.

Deputies arrived and observed two men holding down the suspect. One of the men identified himself as a legislative police officer who was on his way to work. The officer was punched in the face by the suspect and broke his hand during the altercation, the arrest report states.

As more deputies arrived, Sears attempted to pull away from officers who were trying to place him in handcuffs. He was placed in a patrol car where he then began to kick the doors and windows. He was warned and advised multiple times to stop kicking or he would be pepper sprayed, the arrest report states.

Deputies spoke with the original reporting witness who pointed to a vehicle in the area that had sustained significant damage, which was estimated by a deputy to be more than $5,000.
