Boy Scout group of the Comstock has members from Dayton, Virginia City

Boy Scout Troop 847 continues to serve the young men of the Comstock. Meeting weekly at the Mark Twain Community Center, 500 Sam Clemens Avenue in Dayton, the Troop currently has 14 registered Scouts from Dayton and Virginia City.

The Troop’s program and operations are youth-run under the leadership of Senior Patrol Leader Star Scout Joshua Baughman and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader Star Scout Matthew McGifford. Under the mentorship of Scoutmaster Bill Boston and three Assistant Scoutmasters, these Scouts strive to provide a quality program of Scout activities.

Say No to Campus Carry

Dear Editor:

I am opposed to the Concealed Carry Bill AB 148 for a myriad of reasons.

Firstly, students and teachers don’t feel safe, meaning that this will effect our learning environments. Students and teachers alike will be more worried about someone pulling a weapon out in a fit of anger and using it than they are about the educational topic they are discussing. I’m sure the need, and therefore cost, for security around our schools, public buildings, daycares, and colleges will rise as well.

Two jailed for felony heroin trafficking following Carson City SET operation

The Carson City Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Team arrested two men late Saturday on felony drug trafficking and conspiracy charges with 14.5 grams of heroin recovered, plus marijuana and $1,400 cash, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Arrest made in Saturday night Carson City shooting, robbery

A Fallon man has been arrested in the Saturday night Carson City apartment robbery in which the victim was grazed with a bullet after a gun discharged.

Facing criminal charges of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon is Dominick Burt, 34. He was booked on a parole and probation violation in Churchill County and faces the robbery and assault charges for the alleged crimes on Saturday night at a North Edmonds Street apartment, said Carson City Sheriff’s Lt. Brian Humphrey.

Man grazed with bullet, robbed late Saturday night at North Edmonds apartment

Carson City sheriff’s detectives are investigating a shooting that happened late Saturday night at a residence in the 1500 block of North Edmonds.
According to Lt. Brian Humphrey, the victim was grazed by a bullet and was not seriously injured. The suspects fled the scene.

Carson/Storey 4-H Awards Night

On Thursday, Jan 15, the Carson/Storey Cooperative Extension held their 2014 4-H year Awards Night at Fuji Park Pavilion.

The Carson 4-H Leader’s Council sponsored a pizza dinner prior to the ceremony. The Leader’s Council supports all of our 4-H clubs and holds events to raise funds for our scholarship program. They meet once a month to plan activities and deal with requests from clubs and the community.

High School basketball: Carson varsity girls produce lock down defense

It was the opening action of regional play that kicked off Thursday evening on the hard court as the Carson Senators took on the Spanish Springs Cougars in a cross league, girls varsity basketball match up.

Carson took control of the game from the start when they hopped out to an early 8-2 lead thanks to a couple of early steals.

Carson City officers investigate gunfire in the area of Rand and Long streets

UPDATE 10PM: A suspect vehicle has been identified in Thursday night's shooting in the area of Rand and Long streets, according to Carson City sheriff's investigators. The vehicle officers are looking for that may be associated with the shooting is described as a possible blue or black 2008-2010 Chevy pickup, lowered, with possible chrome rims, and tinted windows. Woman identified in Sunday shooting in Dayton, faces second degree murder charge

A woman faces a second-degree murder charge in the late Sunday night shooting death of her husband at their Dayton home.
Kristyn Verdun has been booked into Lyon County Jail awaiting a hearing on charges. Details as to the possible motive haven't been released.

House Passes Amodei's Nevada Native Nations Lands Act

By suspension vote, the U.S. House of Representatives on Monday passed the Nevada Native Nations Lands Act, legislation sponsored by Congressman Mark Amodei of Nevada's second district.

The legislation includes six tribal land measures, as well as a smaller conveyance to the City of Elko. The bill was amended to match the Senate version, which was reported out of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee in August.

Dayton man dies in shooting, woman in custody

A man is dead and a woman is in custody after a shooting at a Dayton home late Sunday night, according to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were dispatched to the 200 block of Gordon Lane in Dayton at 10:56 p.m. for a report of a man who had been shot by his wife.

Carson City public safety agencies stage shooting scenario exercise

The first of two “active assailant response” exercises was staged Saturday at the Carson City Courthouse. The scenario involved two shooters in camouflage who walked through the three story courthouse, shooting city employees and members of the public in their path as they went courtroom to courtroom.

The shooters were taken out with gunfire by Department of Alternative Sentencing officers and Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies within two minutes of the scenario, but not after leaving a bloody path of fatally and critically injured victims.

Nevada wildlife wardens say six elk illegally shot and left to rot

State wildlife officials want to find out who is responsible for illegally shooting six elk and leaving their carcasses to rot in two separate incidents in Lincoln County. Game wardens with the Nevada Department of Wildlife are seeking the public’s help to solve the illegal killing of four adult and two elk calves.

High winds postpone second round of Web.com Tour Qualifying at Dayton Valley

Gusty high winds forced PGA Tour officials to postpone Wednesday’s scheduled second round of the Web.com Tour Qualifying tournament at Dayton Valley Golf Club. Play will resume at 7:45 a.m. on Thursday off both the first and tenth tees.

Second round play on Wednesday was delayed from a scheduled 9 a.m. start until noon. High winds came up again and officials canceled play for the day at 1:15 p.m. Players who resumed second round play will start their second rounds over when play resumes Thursday.

Carson City deputies investigate gunshots fired at Dori Way home

UPDATE: A man was arrested Saturday night after he allegedly fired gunshots at a tree from a Dori Way residence, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. The man was intoxicated and no one was injured.
The residence has been secured and evidence has been retrieved.

Annual forecast good news for Nevada chukar hunters

Forget all of the fluff, let’s just cut to the good news: This year’s Nevada Chukar Hunting Forecast, an annual report put out by the Nevada Department of Wildlife that takes habitat conditions and statewide survey results to estimate chukar populations, was recently released and predicts good chukar hunting for much of Nevada.

"We were hoping the spring and summer rains we had would provide good conditions for chick survival and they did," said Chris Healy, public information officer for NDOW.

Carson City man jailed after firing handgun from inside moving car

A Carson City man was arrested Sunday on a felony charge of discharging a firearm from a moving vehicle while on his way to the rifle range, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Oswaldo Mariscal, 29, is being held on $26,137 bail after officers were contacted about a man shooting a handgun from the passenger window of a car. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
