High School basketball: Carson varsity girls produce lock down defense
It was the opening action of regional play that kicked off Thursday evening on the hard court as the Carson Senators took on the Spanish Springs Cougars in a cross league, girls varsity basketball match up.
Carson took control of the game from the start when they hopped out to an early 8-2 lead thanks to a couple of early steals.
The good defense continued and the score after the first quarter was 14-3. The second quarter was an absolute defensive clinic from the Carson squad as they shut out the Cougars in the second quarter.
After some decent shooting the Senators continued to run the score up through the first half and at the end of the second quarter the score was 23-3. Spanish Springs progressively improved their offense in the game scraping up a couple of baskets to bring the score to 34-13 at the end of the third quarter.
The Cougars also made a notable run on the Senators late in the fourth quarter to bring the score to 38-21, but it was too little too late as the Senators are the ones who will start off their season with a win with a final score of Carson: 41, Spanish Springs: 25.
Head coach Nathan Tolbert had some comments on the game beginning with, "our history is that we come out a little flat, but it only took us about two minutes to get going versus a half in some of our previous contest."
He continued with, "our results from the pressure were working very well and once the defense worked out the little kinks the rest of our play also worked out as well. Madison Preston had a good game and good things happened when we stated aggressive on offense." The Lady Senators next match up is Friday, Dec. 19 against the Hug Hawks at Carson. The game begins at 5:15.
