Boy Scout group of the Comstock has members from Dayton, Virginia City
Boy Scout Troop 847 continues to serve the young men of the Comstock. Meeting weekly at the Mark Twain Community Center, 500 Sam Clemens Avenue in Dayton, the Troop currently has 14 registered Scouts from Dayton and Virginia City.
The Troop’s program and operations are youth-run under the leadership of Senior Patrol Leader Star Scout Joshua Baughman and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader Star Scout Matthew McGifford. Under the mentorship of Scoutmaster Bill Boston and three Assistant Scoutmasters, these Scouts strive to provide a quality program of Scout activities.
Future planned monthly themes in 2015 include: Rifle and Shotgun Shooting, Caving, First Aid/Lifesaving, Kayaking, Orienteering, Backpacking and more. Weekend, overnight outings are held each month.
Scouts participated in the 2015 Pinenut District Klondike Derby and plan to attend the District’s Merit Badge University in March and the Camporee in May. They will also be participating in a weeklong summer camp at the Boy Scout-run Camp Meriweather, located on the central Oregon Coast in August. Summer camp activities will allow Scouts to earn merit badges, complete basic rank requirements, and have fun on two miles of private beach and over 600 acres of rain forest.
To help pay for summer camp, Scouts will be selling Camp Cards in March and April. These cards are $5, and contain reusable coupons for deals from local businesses that are worth much more than the cost of the card.
Troop 847 is taking applications from young men wishing to become Scouts. Fifth and sixth grade students who are at least age 11 may join now. Fifth grade students, age 10, are invited to join the Troop in some activities as guests. The Troop is also looking for older young men who are former Scouts who may have left Scouting after earning their First Class or higher rank to help solidify its youth leadership team. All young men, ages 11 to 17 are welcome.
The Troop is number one on the waiting list for a 12-day backpacking trek into the backcountry of Philmont Scout Ranch in Northern New Mexico for Summer 2016. Philmont is the premier high adventure base for Scouting and offers activities ranging from black powder shooting to fly fishing and much, much more at its many backcountry camps. Being number one on the waiting list all but assures the Troop will be selected to participate in a trek. This will be an activity for the Troop’s older Scouts.
Troop 847 serves the youth of Dayton, Virginia City and Moundhouse, but the Troop accepts applications from all young men, regardless of where they live in Northern Nevada. Troop meetings are held every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the Mark Twain Community Center and interested young men may join at any meeting. For more information on Troop 847, call Committee Chairman Don Robertson at 775-241-2087.
