A “C” corporation, one that files and pays its own tax, has a maximum tax rate today of 34 percent. That makes it profitable to move jobs and investments to other countries that have lower tax rates. The proposal the House of Representatives recently sent to the Senate proposes a new flat rate for “C” corporations of 20 percent.

Carson City’s tastiest event coming up Saturday, July 23

There’s a reason that “Taste of Downtown” holds true to its name. Dozens of Carson City restaurants will participate in this evening event, giving residents and visitors alike the chance to sample food, dig into unique dishes and get a feel for the vibe of the local cuisine.

Whether it’s burgers, nachos, tamales, or Thai food, participants are likely to find it in downtown Carson City on July 23, the date that “Taste” is scheduled in honor of its 23rd year. Restaurants like “The Thick Slice Pizza,” “Red’s Old 395 Grill,” and “Yang’s Kitchen” are taking part.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. — Former MLB All-Star pitcher Mark Mulder, the defending champion, and newly-retired pro tennis champion Mardy Fish are listed as co-favorites by the Harrah’s and Harveys Race & Sports Book to win the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament, July 22-24, at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

Mulder and Fish are both 3-1 to win the 27th annual competition airing live on NBC and NBCSN next weekend.

Carson City Sheriff’s Motor Unit raises $500 for Catmandu shelter from recent competition

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Motor Unit, which adopted the feline shelter Catmandu as the nonprofit organization it would help through the sale of t-shirts at last month's Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge, presented a $500 check Wednesday to the organization.

“We’re really grateful for all you’ve done for us,” said Linda Buchanan, founder of the nonprofit Catmandu, which has been struggling financially this year to keep its doors open.

The Rowans to bring Americana rock favorites as 2016 Concert Under the Stars opening act

Carson City has had the pleasure of welcoming Rowan brothers, Lorin and Chris over the years as they’ve played at Cafe at Adele’s. This year is no different, but with one exception: In addition to opening Concert Under the Stars, A Benefit For The Greenhouse Project, Thursday, July 14, The Rowans also play at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 13, on the veranda.

Marijuana clouds issue of workplace drug use

All employers must protect their workers, their customers and themselves when it comes to illicit drug use in the workplace. Doing so will become especially crucial if Nevadans, through November’s ballot, vote to legalize the recreational sale and regulation of marijuana and related products.

This was the primary message of a “Marijuana in the Workplace” lecture delivered Friday at the Carson City Chamber of Commerce’s Soup’s On! luncheon, in collaboration with Partnership Carson City and the city’s district attorney’s office.

Nevada Rural Housing Authority along with several community partners broke ground Wednesday on the Richards Crossing housing facility in Carson City to benefit homeless veterans. The complex is at Jeanell Drive near the corner of North Carson Street and Winnie Lane.

Annual Carriage Square Neighborhood Garage Sale Day

The Carriage Square Neighborhood, located half a mile west of Carson Street and just south of Winnie Ln., is having its annual garage sale day on Saturday, June 4th, starting at 8am. At least 16 homes are participating this year, and are selling a smorgasbord of items.

Once you're in the neighborhood, just look for the balloons! Each Garage Sale home will have balloons tied to the mailbox so you know exactly where to go.

Carson City arrests: Woman jailed on child abuse charge, admits giving daughter meth

A 47-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of felony child abuse causing physical harm, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
