I’m not trying to rush you, but the holidays season approaches. As such, the holiday craft fairs, bazaars, and bake sales have arrived. You may as well start looking at that gift list to see who would enjoy something one-of-a-kind and locally crafted. If not for gift giving, these fairs are an excellent way to find fun ways to decorate your home. Other than that, the weekend is kind of quiet, but you'll want take a look at the list and see what catches your fancy.

A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to everyone who has served or is serving in our Armed Forces. Further thank yous go to their loved ones for the sacrifices they make. This Veterans’ Day several local and national businesses have some special offers for you: free food, drinks, and even pet adoptions. You’ll find them all listed here. It’s also a Friday, so Carson City has some fun packed into our little valley. Enjoy live music at Westside Pour House or Living the Good Life. It’s a DJ Dance Party at Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar.

With thousands of pets at stake across the United States, Pets of the Homeless has begun its annual fundraising campaign in an effort to help homeless individuals keep their furry companions healthy.

Sage Ridge School's Theatre Department proudly presents: The Miracle Worker, by William Gibson. Gibson's play is a true story based on the early life of Helen Keller, her family’s struggles, and her teacher, Anne Sullivan. In 1881, Helen Keller was diagnosed with Scarlet Fever when she was 19 months old.

The Nevada Artist Association will host a reception and awards ceremony for Nevada Day Art Show participants on Saturday Nov. 12, 1-4 p.m.

The NAA invited all regional artists, members and non members, to enter their latest art work for the exhibition. A judged exhibition, regional artists responded with a showing of their latest and best original art.

The inaugural Carson Mall Fine Arts Faire, located at 1313 S. Carson Street in Carson City, enters its final day of exhibition Sunday going on now until 8:30 p.m.

October is behind us and this November weekend kicks off the holiday season with craft fairs, art shows, and plenty of fun. Enjoy some live music tonight: Living the Good Life and Glen Eagles are a great place for dinner and some entertainment. It’s the first Friday which means Improv night at Brewery Arts Center. Break a leg to the members of Western Nevada Musical Theater Company. Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ opens its three week run tonight.

Inspired by the locally-based national non-profit Pets of the Homeless, Chef Don Pepe and Downtown Coin of Carson City have joined forces once again this year to raise money for the organization and its efforts to provide care for the furry companions of homeless individuals across the United States.

Refuge from politics features painters, photographers, basket makers and more

More than thirty artists from Northern Nevada including Reno, Carson City and Sparks — several nationally known-— will be featured at the 22th annual Reno Artisan Show and Sale Nov. 4 and 5 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Admission is free and 25 pieces of original art will be given away.

Competition is in the heart of most people, and the students, faculty, and staff at CHS is no exception to that rule. Students and teachers are not going to miss out on the myriad of individual and cooperative competitive opportunities that present themselves at the high school level.

Nevada is one of the few states that celebrate its Admission Day, and boy do we throw a party. A parade, competitions of strength and facial hair, hot air balloons, bloody marys, a carnival, pow wow, and free chili are just a few of the festivities awaiting the capital city on Saturday.

The party begins Friday this year with a ribbon cutting celebration of the 'new' downtown. The Nevada State Museum hits its 75th Anniversary this year and will have a day full of fun and surprises. The Nevada Artists Association announces the winners of it's judged Nevada Day Art Exhibition. The independent judges for this art show chose "80 Acres," an oil by Sally Cohen of Reno, as "Best of Show." The NAA show committee chose "The Wranglers," a mixed media painting by Glyness Miller of Carson City, for "The Spirit of Nevada" award.

In recognition of the 75th anniversary of the Nevada State Museum, Carson City, the public is encouraged and cordially invited to attend a day of honor filled with special events, Friday, Oct.28, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Hold onto your broomstick, this weekend is bound to sweep you up in Halloween fun. First you’ll need a pumpkin. The Harvest Train Festival and Pumpkin Patch at the Nevada State Railroad Museum is a good place to start. Take the costumed kids to a Trunk or Treat at Advantage Auto Works off Old Hot Springs Road courtesy of the members of Carson Cruise Meet and Greet. Team up with Mark Twain for a ghostly tour of our haunted downtown or you can choose a shorter tour that’s perfect for families. Keep reading, this is just the tip of the candy corn.

St. Peter's Episcopal Church in downtown Carson City at Telegraph and Division streets offers its annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday November 12 from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. The bazaar features crafters who won a total of 19 ribbons at the 2015 Nevada State Fair. Raffle tickets will be on sale for "The Secret Garden," a highly imaginative appliquéd quilt with William Morris inspired floral motifs.

There will be a rummage sale Saturday, Oct. 22 at Fremont Elementary School in Carson City with proceeds to assist the Cliff Bros Ranch in Washoe County that was destroyed in the Little Valley Fire.

Tickets are now on sale for the annual Celebrity Chef and Harvest Dinner, which takes place Nov. 7 at Cafe at Adele’s. This is one of three fundraisers conducted each year for The Greenhouse Project, whose mission it is to continue “growing a greener and healthier community,” according to Karen Abowd, board president, who co-owns Cafe at Adele’s with her husband, Chef Charlie Abowd.

I’m usually a lover of sunny days, but right now I say bring on the rain. The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. There are still plenty of things to occupy your time, but the weather may force more cancellations.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is offering a workshop on “Starting a Food Business in Nevada” with video conferencing of the event to be held at the Carson City Extension office. Attendees will learn key considerations to creating and selling food items, such as jellies, baked goods, pickles and frozen produce.

The Carson Valley has some great resale and consignment shops that are willing to buy your gently used items or consign them for you in their shops. These are helpful ideas even if you just want to sell your items at a garage sale or on Facebook or Craigslist.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will conduct a compliance check this Saturday. Minor decoy(s) will be sent into local businesses in Carson City who have liquor licenses. The decoys will attempt to purchase alcohol, using their real identification.

The weekend continues for school students. While Columbus Day is usually not celebrated in Nevada, it is a professional development day for our school district. Take the kids to Carson Lanes for $1 bowling. Carson Library is offering a Makerspace for Kids this afternoon with hands-on STEAM activities that make learning fun. It’s the Buccaneers versus the Panthers for Monday Night Football: drink specials can be found all over town. Sing the ‘weekend’s over’ blues during karaoke at the Firkin and Fox.

Carson High School Career and Technical Education floriculture students led by agriculture teacher, Charlie Mann, are taking orders for floral arrangements created and sold to benefit local breast cancer and domestic violence charitable organizations. Orders will be accepted through Oct. 12.
