This year’s Winterfest theme is hanging out with Harry Potter, and the plan is to turn CHS into Hogwarts with teachers creating a Hogwarts’ themed door followed by a door decorating contest.

The estate of Bob McFadden, featuring art and collectibles curated over McFadden’s lifetime, is being offered for sale by the McFadden family at an art and collectibles sale Saturday, Jan. 14, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale is open to both the public and professional art dealers, and will be held at the McFadden home, the historic Krebs Peterson mansion, at 500 Mountain Street in Carson City.

Carson City –– Area 4-H members are on the lookout for donations of fabric/sewing notions and clean, useable household items. Sewing notions, crafting items, sewing machines, etc. are all welcome donations. Donation Days drop off location this year will be at the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Office, 2621 Northgate Lane, Suite 15, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21 and 28. Christmas is now just 11 days away, and children around Carson City have until Dec. 24 to visit Santa Claus at the Carson Mall to give him their holiday wish lists this year.

The Santa Train is arriving this weekend and next weekend in Carson City at the Nevada State Railroad Museum. Trains operate this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 10-11 and next weekend, Dec. 17-18.

For the sixth consecutive year, The Polar Express holiday train rides on the historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad have sold out. More than 15,000 passengers secured rides on the only train in Northern Nevada that visits the North Pole.

Friends of the Carson City Library is hosting a New York New Year's Eve Party on Dec. 31st from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Carson Plaza Event Center, 211 E. 9th Street.

Proceeds from this event will provide funds to the Carson City Library for equipment. Dinner will be a buffet of tri-tip or shrimp.

As the holiday season approaches, Charlie Blim, owner of Charlie B Gallery, advises going into local shops rather than big box stores.

“I’ve got stuff made by actual humans,” he said. “All that other stuff is made by machines.”

But when customers come into his shop, he’s not pushing to make a sale. He’s got a bigger goal in mind.
“Art changed my life,” he said. “If they take the time to learn the history, learn about the artist, it could change their lives too. It’s not just about buying stuff.”

A 25-year-old Carson City woman was arrested early Sunday for suspicion of domestic battery after allegedly spraying her roommate with pepper spray in the face during an argument, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
