I wish everyone luck keeping their triskaidekaphobia at bay. The number thirteen is nothing to fear, even when it falls on a Friday. (I’m not going to lie: triskaidekaphobia is one of my favorite words and I very rarely get the chance to use it in a sentence.) Mother Nature has thrown us for a loop this week, and we deserve the chance to enjoy the break in the storm. Youth Theatre Carson City is thrilled to announce our upcoming production of Disney’s 'The Lion King Jr.,' based on the classic animated Disney film and the groundbreaking Broadway musical, Friday through Jan. 22 in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center.

With localized drainage flooding happening in many areas around the capital city region today, the Carson River near Carson City is rising and expected to reach peak flood stage Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

With heavy rain arriving and local flooding looking likely, Carson City Public Works crews were out in full force Sunday morning clearing streets of debris and slushy snow piling around drainages.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has declared a state of emergency due to the severe weather system developing in Northern Nevada and the consequent danger to life and damage to property, said Carson City Deputy Emergency Manager Stacey Belt.

Snow showers Saturday turned to a brief period of frozen rain followed by light rain showers in Carson City.

Showers tapered off Saturday afternoon, but the break in precipitation will be short-lived as the much-anticipated atmospheric river event approaches Northwestern Nevada from the Sierra Nevada mountains to the west.

How adventurous are you? Ascent Runs continues their Be Bold, Run in the Cold Winter Trail Series with a five or ten kilometer run starting at Centennial Park. If you’d like a less strenuous outdoor activity, then the Downtown Business Association’s monthly Wine Walk is a perfect choice. The wine walk is a rain, snow, or shine event, so bring an umbrella. With one last dry day left ahead of the approaching atmospheric river weather system, emergency management officials in Carson City, Lyon and Douglas counties are urging residents to prepare now in anticipation of weekend flooding throughout the region.

YERINGTON, Nev. — The Lyon County Emergency Management Team completed final plans Friday for the predicted weather and flood event for this upcoming weekend.

County resources are being pre-positioned to monitor and respond to potential flooding. Lyon County is working with the Nevada Division of Emergency Management, National Weather Service and surrounding counties for the past week to prepare for this event.

The Brewery Arts Center, Carson City’s premiere epicenter for the arts since 1976, presents BOSTYX which features the hits and vibe of two American pop music icons Boston and STYX all in one high-energy show that is sure to please classic rock ‘n roll fans of all ages.

Imagine a long, narrow river in the sky about 250 to 375 miles wide, moving along with the weather. It transports water vapor with a flow several times faster than the water at the mouth of the Mississippi River. A river that, when it hits land, releases 30-50 percent of the area's annual precipitation in the form or rain or snow in just a couple of days.

With the current storm still producing rain around the Carson City region, forecasters have turned their attention to the next system that will arrive this weekend bringing warmer conditions, rising snow levels and the potential for flooding.

Are you ready for this? New Year’s weekend is upon us and brings with it hope and optimism for the New Year. Resolutions are made, parties are planned, and the kids are smack dab in the middle of their winter break. The first speech and debate tournament of the year is always an exciting and nerve-wrecking time. We started out the school year with some amazing recruitment efforts on the part of the few returning underclassmen we had recommit to compete this year.

With our school’s annual overnight trip to Rock Creek and the first weeks of school, few competitors felt confident enough with the practice time put in to be able to successfully compete at the first tournament but we did have a small team of three ready and anxious to present to pieces for judgement.
