Carson City braces for atmospheric river flooding
With heavy rain arriving and local flooding looking likely, Carson City Public Works crews were out in full force Sunday morning clearing streets of debris and slushy snow piling around drainages.
The Carson City Emergency Operations Center is staffed and fully operational. There is mild flooding around Carson City, and Morgan Mill Road has water on it. Issues are being addressed as they occur, said Carson City Emergency Management spokeswoman Stacey Belt.
Right now it is about getting to the drainages, culverts and unclogging them, both around the west side of Carson City and the east side around the Carson River, which is nearing its banks. Go here for a real-time map of the areas in Carson City experiencing flooding. Satellite images show heavy rain will begin to fall in the next couple of hours.
An atmospheric river will produce a period of intense rainfall across the Sierra and western Nevada that will lead to widespread flooding Sunday and Monday. Around 8-12 inches of rain is forecast along the Sierra crest with 5 to 10 inches possible west of Highway 395 and then 2 to 5 inches along and east of Highway 395.
Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has declared a state of emergency due to the severe weather system developing in Northern Nevada and the consequent danger to life and damage to property.
Residents are urged to take personal precautions because of the heavy rainfall and high potential for flooding, she said.'
Belt said non-emergency flood-related events can be reported to the city by calling (775) 887-2355. However, residents should refrain from calling 9-1-1 for non-emergent matters.
Residents should plan to stay off roads that are susceptible to flooding, Belt said.
An evacuation center has been established at the Latter-Day Saints Church, 411 S. Saliman Street, just south of Carson High School, she said.
The center is open and able to assist residents who have lost power or are experiencing flooding.
The Carson City Salvation Army is assisting the American Red Cross and the LDS church for evacuation center management.
"The Salvation Army and (Captain) Mark Cyr [are] always willing, regardless of our call for need," Belt said. "They provide all the food, which is healthy, plentiful and fresh."
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for the region. Go here to read the current warning.
