Partnership Carson City, farmers market team up to make produce affordable for low income families
Submitted by editor on Wed, 08/24/2016 - 3:24pmSince the inception of the Third and Curry Streets Farmers Market nine years ago, organizer Linda Marrone has wanted customers to have the option to pay for produce through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps.
“Just like with anything else, we feel everyone deserves access to healthy fruits and vegetables,” Marrone said.

Local Non-Profit Making a Difference, One Meal at a Time

During the 2014/2015 school year, Food For Thought’s Backpack Program distributed 13,509 bags of food that contained 54,036 meals to food insecure elementary, middle and high school children in Carson City. In the summer of 2015, the program provided free lunches to children at two locations within Carson City. The innovative 2015 Summer Program served over 4,500 meals.

Carson City sheriff’s log: Hospital nutrition manager jailed for felony embezzlement

Free fitness classes in Carson City and Minden next week

Starting Monday, women can attend any classes, which will be a mixed hour of endurance-based exercises.
Regular classes in Carson City are offered at 5, 6 and 8:30 a.m.; noon; and 5:30 p.m. Minden classes are 5, 6, and 9 a.m.; and 5:30 p.m.

The aim of the program is to supplement the diets of low-income seniors with fresh, nutritious produce while supporting Nevada’s farmers.
The Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Inc., also known as RSVP, has free Farmers Market coupons for Carson City low-income seniors.
