Motorists warned to be aware of feral, estray horses near Highway 50 during construction
The Nevada Department of Agriculture and Return to Freedom, under a cooperative agreement, are working with the Nevada Department of Transportation as they install livestock fencing on sections of Highway 50 in Silver Springs. The project is expected to be completed in late August.
“We always advise motorists traveling in this area to be extremely cautious due to feral and estray horses,” said Flint Wright, administrator of the NDA’s Animal Industry Division. “Right now, with drought conditions, the horses are looking for food in areas with higher traffic so we want drivers to be attentive.”
“The long-term goal for the livestock fencing is to increase public safety,” said Jim Barbee, director of the NDA. “But in the short-term we all have to be watchful to protect ourselves on the roadways.”
To report a dangerous situation in the area, please contact Chris Miller, NDA Enforcement Officer, at 775.385.1986.
