Holiday with a Hero gets boost from Carson City mayor, two local businesses

In Plain Sight Marketing founder Renee Taylor Plain and Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell each made $100 donations Monday to Holiday with a Hero. They are asking small business owners, those in local government and community members to give what they can.

“Tis the Season” again already! For the 16th Year Friends To All volunteers will dress up in Santa Suits and Helper costumes to bring joy and cheer to senior citizens throughout Carson City.

On Saturday, Dec. 13 these festive groups will log between 150 and 200 stops as they make their rounds visiting and delivering gifts. This year we give special appreciation and honor to the man who inspired our program, Raymond Smith, who passed away in September. Ray’s enthusiasm in bringing the joy of a visit from Santa Claus to so many in our community will live on in our hearts forever.

Heavenly, Kirkwood award Vail Resorts EpicPromise grants to 49 Lake Tahoe area community groups

Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort are proud to announce their 2014-2015 grants awards to 49 local organizations and projects.

The grant program is part of Vail Resorts EpicPromise, the company’s umbrella brand for its environmental efforts and community giving. EpicPromise highlights Vail Resorts’ strong commitment amongst guests, employees, and community members and engages them to be stewards of the natural environment and local causes. The local recipients were recognized at a Grants Reception event on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at Heavenly’s California Main Lodge.

Preserving the integrity of the Virginia City National Landmark: A reply to P. Abercrombie

In a recent “letter” published in CarsonNow.org Pamela Abercrombie decried the negative reaction of Silver City and Gold Hill residents to the Comstock Foundation’s fund-raising gambit offering prints of the “Nine Cheers for the Silver State” painting to subscribers. In characterizing critics of the painting as “this handful of local residents,” she echoes a favorite tactic of Corrado de Gasperis, Comstock Mining’s CEO who frequently diminishes the legitimate concerns of residents by portraying CMI critics as “a few disgruntled residents” or the like.

Letter: No amount of window dressing will change the fact that pit mining is destroying historic landmark

I read with interest Pam Abercrombie's recent letter about Comstock Mining Inc and the Foundation it funds.

To an outsider the Comstock Foundation for History and Culture looks like a public relations effort, window dressing to distract attention from their continuing destruction of the Virginia City National Historic Landmark by the pit mining now underway in Gold Hill and threatening Silver City.

As a resident of Silver City, I am a proud board member of the Comstock Foundation for History and Culture. Born and raised in Carson City, I spent much of my youth on the Comstock. I focused much of my studies on Nevada and western history obtaining my undergraduate degree in history from the University of Nevada, Reno.

I was honored when asked to serve on the Foundation’s board and it has been incredibly rewarding to work with the Foundation during this exciting time for the Comstock Historic District.

Local Wound Care Center Joins Healogics, Inc. to Raise Awareness of Diabetic Foot Ulcers

The Center for Wound Healing at Carson Tahoe Health, a member of the Healogics network, is participating in the Healogics National Diabetes Campaign from Oct. 27 to Oct. 31. One of nearly 600 Healogics managed centers; The Center for Wound Healing at Carson Tahoe Health offers advanced therapies to patients suffering from chronic wounds like diabetic foot ulcers.

Program directors across the nation will dedicate the entire week to visiting local physician offices to provide education to help staff identify diabetic patients with or at risk of having ulcers of the lower extremity.

Letter: Working to restore the Comstock Historic District

Recently, a few naysayers have written to local newspapers, criticizing the effort of the Comstock Foundation for History and Culture, a 501(c)(3) organization, to raise funds to preserve historic resources within the Comstock Mining District, a National Historic Landmark.

41st Annual Nevada Day World Championship Single Jack Drilling Contest

The 41st Annual World Championship Single Jack Drilling Contest takes place at 11:05am on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014 at the Carson Nugget west parking lot. Come view the old-world contest of strength, skill, and Sierra White Granite grit; free for spectators.

Contestants used 4 1/2 pound hammers and as many as 11 bits of graduated steel to drill a 3/4 inch hole in a 4,320 pound piece of Sierra White Granite.

Nevada 150 events lined up through the end of October

Many celebrations are scheduled throughout the Silver State in the month of October. These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and help bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Oct. 16 through 30. Column: Some tax debts are not discharged by bankruptcy

In 2003 William M. Hawkins, III filed Chapter 11 (reorganization) Bankruptcy Petition that (as usual) was later converted to a Chapter 7 (full discharge) Bankruptcy. The District Court affirmed the Bankruptcy Court holding that as to Mr. Hawkins the tax debts were not discharged by the bankruptcy, but the tax debts of Mrs. Lisa Hawkins (his second wife) were discharged. He appealed the ruling.

The Nevada State Demographer’s Office at the University of Nevada, Reno has released its most recent population projections for Nevada and its individual counties, projecting through 2033.

National anti-bullying group featured tonight at Boys and Girls Club in Carson City

UPDATE: Carson City will host a presentation, the second of its kind this year, addressing the issue of school bullying, tonight, Thursday, Oct. 9 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada.

Members of Teach Anti-Bullying, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit group that works around the country with educators, parents and law enforcement, will discuss what many believe is a crisis affecting communities nationwide. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada is located at 1870 Russell Way. The public is invited and encouraged to attend this free event.

Nevada agencies urge caution around feral, estray horses on roadways

State agencies are urging caution when driving on highways, public roads and in neighborhoods near the Virginia Range. The range includes the areas east of Carson City, Fernley, Dayton, Lockwood, south Reno, Silver Springs and Virginia City.

RSVP Nevada Day celebration and carnival to celebrate Silver State's 150th birthday

For the 29th year, the Nevada Rural Counties Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Inc. will sponsor the Nevada Day Carnival at Mills Park on Oct. 30 through Nov. 2, 2014, RSVP executive director Susan Haas announced Friday.

Earlier this year RSVP went all out over July 4 with a spectacular fireworks display, synchronized to music, to mark Nevada’s Sesquicentennial. For Nevada Day weekend, visitors can expect plenty of games, thrilling carnival rides and entertainment venues.

“We will have a lot more family fun and entertainment than ever before this year,” said Haas.

Dayton artist unveils painting of living Nevada governors and elected officials

Renowned Dayton artist, Steven Saylor, has completed his painting “Nine Cheers for the Silver State,” featuring current governor Brian Sandoval, the two U.S. Senators from Nevada, and Mark Amodei, who represents the Northern Nevada congressional district.

The painting celebrates the 150th anniversary of Nevada statehood and will raise funds for the Comstock Foundation for History and Culture, a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and promotion of the Comstock Historic District, a National Historic Landmark.

Sierra Nevada Corporation’s Ozmens pledge $5 million for UNR entrepreneurship center

University of Nevada, Reno alumni Fatih Ozmen ’81 M.S. and Eren Ozmen ’85 MBA have pledged $5 million to create a new entrepreneurship center in conjunction with the University’s College of Business. To date, this is the largest gift the College of Business has received.

Tesla has been in negotiation for months with four other states including California, Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. CEO Elon Musk announced in spring that two sites would start to be constructed before a final winner was declared.

In July, Tesla broke ground at the Reno Tahoe Industrial Center, but the company did not publicly commit to building in Nevada. The Silver State ultimately won the battle for the major economic development.

Career training agency Join, Inc. offers extended job assistance help to unemployed

Join, Inc., northern Nevada’s non-profit career training agency has received the Department of Labor’s Emergency Grant Funding to provide immediate assistance to individuals who have been unemployed for 27 weeks or more and have qualified for unemployment insurance.
