Warren Buffett has found another elephant. Berkshire Hathaway's MidAmerican Energy utility said Wednesday that it will buy Nevada electric and natural gas company NV Energy for $5.6 billion as it expands its footprint in the energy sector.

Directed by Jeff Fast and performed in traditional Shakespearean language and style, the play tells the story of a rich merchant who won’t allow his fair young daughter to marry until her shrewish older sister does.

Students win big at Northern Nevada FIRST TECH Challenge Robotics Championship

The FIRST NV organization, organized the Second Annual Northern Nevada FIRST TECH Challenge was held Saturday at Carson High School in Carson City. High school teams from Nevada, California, Oregon, and Utah competed in a full day robotics competition for two seeds to the World Festival Robotics Competition to be held in April.

Carson City employers gear up for today's job fair

At least 28 employers will be at a job fair featured at the Carson City Senior Center today, Friday, Feb. 22. The event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. in the dining area and is open to the public, said Lynn Ellis, WorkForce Case Manager for Carson City Health and Human Services. The event is sponosored by Carson City Health and Human Services, JOIN and Job Connect.

Former Carson City manager Linda Ritter nominated for CCCVB interim director position

The Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau on Monday nominated former Carson City manager Linda Ritter as interim executive director.

Board members meeting unanimously approved Ritter after she had expressed interest in the position. Ritter was nominated by Karen Abowd, board member of the CCCVB and a Carson City Supervisor. Ritter was not at the meeting and hasn't accepted the offer.

Recently, while dialing thru the radio spectrum I stumbled upon the “conservative” Mike Gallagher talk show, which is broadcast locally here in Carson City, on KKFT-99.1.

Mr. Gallagher stated (and I am paraphrasing here) “our children are not allowed to pray in public schools”

“The United States Supreme Court has never held that students cannot pray in school.

Carson City offers curbside Christmas tree disposal through Jan. 4

Carson City is offering Christmas tree recycling in cooperation with Capital Sanitation/Waste Management Inc. As in previous years, trees can be placed curbside on regular collection days or taken to one of the drop-off locations listed below.

Trees will be chipped in the springtime and given to local residents to use for mulch in their yards. Last year, 36 tons of wood waste was redirected from the landfill.

Gov. Sandoval appoints Lake Tahoe ski industry stalwart, Reno basketball team partner to Tourism Commision

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval on Tuesday appointed John Wagnon of Vail Resorts and Herb Santos, Jr. to the Nevada Commission on Tourism. The terms are effective immediately.

Wagnon, a 40-year veteran of the snowsports industry, is senior director of brand marketing for Vail Resorts, Inc at Heavenly Mountain Resort south shore Lake Tahoe and Kirkwood Mountain Resort.

He has served on the on the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, Ski Lake Tahoe and the California Travel Industry Association boards. Wagnon is also a trustee and past chairman of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority Board.

Carson City and Reno Hostess stores to close Tuesday

Hostess Brands Inc.’s outlets in Carson City and Reno will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday as part of the company’s announced intent Friday to wind down operations after struggling to keep up with rising labor costs and the ever-changing tastes of Americans.
The company, whose roster of brands dating as far back as 1888 including iconic childhood treats such as Twinkies, Ding Dongs, Wonder Bread and Drakes, filed a motion to liquidate Friday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court after striking workers across the country crippled its ability to maintain production.

Early season Lake Tahoe snow prompts Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood to open early

Powerful early-season storms combined with the area’s largest and most advanced snowmaking operations have allowed Vail Resorts’ Lake Tahoe mountains – Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort – to open early with 111 acres. Heavenly and Northstar will open on Wednesday, Nov. 14 with a combined seven lifts and eight trails, totaling 51 acres.

I attended a League of Women Voters' meeting last week ( October 16th). I may be have been dreaming, but people were mostly civil to each other. It was a refreshing change from so many discussions I've observed over the past two years. . . mostly angry shouting matches. Marilee Swirczek wrote recently about the "shout-out" at WNC which turned unruly when some opponents of the City Center Project started pushing and shoving an invited guest. I'm glad I wasn't there.

Heller Says Online Gaming Bill Should Not Be Political Football In Run-up To General Election

CARSON CITY – U.S. Sen. Dean Heller today said online gaming legislation critical to the future of Nevada’s economy should be removed from the world of politics so partisan fights don’t “poison the water” for the bill’s future in Congress.

Heller, interviewed on the Nevada NewsMakers television program, said the legislation is too important to be subjected to political fights between himself and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid between now and the Nov. 6 general election.
