Polar Express 2014 tickets aboard the historic V&T Railroad now on sale

Tickets for the 2014 season of the Polar Express aboard the historic Virginia and Truckee Railroad are now on sale. The perennial holiday favorite all-ages train ride from the frosty Northern Nevada landscape to the North Pole, will run from Nov. 20 to Dec. 22. The hour long V&T diesel train ride includes a keepsake silver bell, hot chocolate and cookies, entertainment and a reading of The Polar Express.

Nevada leaders launch student prescription drug prevention video contest

Nevada middle and high school students and schools are encouraged to enter in the Nevada Prescription Drug Prevention Video Contest sponsored by Gov. Brian Sandoval and Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto.

This is an opportunity for Nevada students to get creative and use social media to promote awareness about prescription drug abuse and encourage their peers to stay away from abusing prescription drugs.

Winners will be selected from each Nevada school district. Final winners will be announced Nov. 3, 2014.

Food For Thought Announces New Executive Director

Food For Thought Inc., a local nonprofit organization, would like to announce the selection of Marlene Maffei, as its new executive director. The selection was made after an open application process, during which Maffei served as operations manager for the organization.

“We are very pleased to announce this appointment,” reports Lynette Conrad Board President, along with the entire Board of Directors. “Marlene will bring great leadership and creativity to the program and strengthen community relationships. She has served the volunteer nonprofit sector in Carson City for over 10 years.”

CHS Football Boosters host Aug. 23 annual kick-off fundraiser

Local non-profit, CHS Football Boosters will hold its annual Kick-Off and Hall of Fame Dinner on Saturday, August, 23, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carson Nugget Parking lot in Carson City.

Silver City and Gold Hill residents seek financial assistance from active mine

Silver City, NV – August 4, 2014 – The Comstock Residents Association (CRA) announced today that it is seeking financial assistance from Comstock Mining Inc. (CMI) to conduct document and data review following the mine’s continued activity near residences in the area.

This request succeeds CMI’s offer to pay for blood testing and soil analysis for Silver City residents due to potential health and environmental consequences of mining activity close to homes in the area.

Column: Some U.S. corporations are moving their tax domiciles to avoid taxes

The Congressional Research Service, a policy research arm of Congress, recently told Congress 76 U.S. corporations have shifted their tax domiciles out of the United States to other countries since 1983 to avoid U.S. taxes.

Moving the tax domicile is known as an “inversion." It is still rare, but it is becoming more common. The Congressional Research Service said 47 such deals have been done in the last 10 years and more are in the works.

TRPA wraps up 'Car-free' Tahoe Bike Challenge

What started as a way to get more staff members of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency to participate in the Tahoe Bike Challenge has become a hallmark event for planners at the bi-state agency, according to TRPA.
This is the fourth year that the agency has made an environmental improvement by essentially closing its parking lot to motorized staff vehicles for one car-free day today.

Carson City area programs among Nevada Tourism grant recipients

Two local programs, Nevada Indian Territory and Ventana Sierra, Inc., received grant money from the Nevada Commission on Tourism designed to increase travel to the Carson City area.

The money is part of $985,146 in grant funding for projects throughout rural Nevada designed to increase travel to those areas, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki announced Wednesday at the commission’s quarterly meeting.

Nevadan Borrowers May be Eligible to Receive Loan Modifications and Payments for Past Abuse

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto announced this week a $550 million joint state-federal settlement with mortgage lender and servicer SunTrust Mortgage Inc. to address mortgage origination, servicing, and foreclosure abuses. It is estimated that eligible Nevada homeowner’s will receive approximately $2.8 million in loan modifications as part of the settlement.

Nevada Day 2014 celebration planning underway in Carson City

Nevada’s state capitol, Carson City, will host festivities to pay tribute to the Silver State’s 150th anniversary of statehood. A full schedule of events during the Nevada Day holiday weekend will be highlighted by the original Nevada Day Parade on Saturday, Nov. 1, when celebrating crowds will line the Carson Street parade route to view the floats, marching bands, horses, entertainers, public officials and celebrity guests.

Carson City couple invests $100,000 for WNC construction management faculty chair position

Making Western Nevada College the best educational experience possible for students brings pleasure to Rob and Dorothy Ramsdell. Over the past 15 years, the Carson City couple has been instrumental in improving programs, facilities, equipment and students’ educational opportunities at WNC.

Their unwavering generosity and support of WNC recently touched the college’s Bachelor of Technology (BTech) Construction Management program when they made a lead gift of $100,000 for the an endowed faculty chair position.

Anti-bullying campaign founder says issue is epidemic that requires community solutions

The statistic is staggering: 56 percent of school children, grades 5-12, or about 13 million nationwide say they've been a target of bullies at one time or another.

It's a problem that affects communities, families and schools. Tackling the issue takes a commitment from parents, teachers, law enforcement, elected officials and children themselves. That was the message delivered Saturday at workshop in Carson City presented by the founding members of the national nonprofit group Teach Anti-Bullying, Inc.

National anti-bullying group to give May 10 talk in Carson City

Carson City will host a presentation on bullying by a Philadelphia-based nonprofit agency that works around the country with educators, parents and law enforcement.

Members of Teach Anti-Bullying, Inc. will discuss what many say is a national crisis affecting communities across the country. The Saturday, May 10 presentation, Bullying: The Silent Threat, will be presented from 10 a.m. to noon at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 West King Street, in Carson City.

Fundraiser Proceeds Preserves Comstock History

The Comstock Foundation for History and Culture raised $15,003 for nine organization within the Comstock Historic District. The Comstock Foundation matched donations up to $1,000 for each organization.

The fundraising event was part of a commemoration of the restoration of the Upper Yellow Jacket hoist and ore chute in Gold Hill, the Foundation’s first substantial preservation project since organizing in June 2013. Work on the Upper Yellow Jacket hoist and ore chute cost roughly $100,000.
