The first day is on Lifeskills, Job Search and Networking; the second day is on prefecting your 60 Second Me; the third day is Resume building; and the last day is on Interviewing Skills. Agencies, counties and employers continue to push job hiring in the region

Employers and job seekers have been connecting this winter and spring through a number of initiatives including job fairs in Carson City, Lake Tahoe, an April 4 event planned in Douglas County and most recently through Nevada JobConnect.

A weeklong job quest campaign in Carson City received 1,047 job openings in a variety of industries from entry level to executive level jobs, well above the goal of 500 job openings set by the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, said DETR Director Frank Woodbeck.

UNR professor receives prestigious Science Foundation CAREER award

Chanwoo Park, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, joins a growing group of researchers at the University of Nevada, Reno who have received prestigious and highly competitive National Science Foundation CAREER awards.

The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program award is given to junior faculty at the beginning of their academic careers who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars, placing focus on high-quality research and education activities.

Mammogram screenings in Carson City available March 22-23 through Nevada Health Centers

Nevada Health Centers' traveling Mammovan will provide mammogram screenings Saturday and Sunday, March 22-23, in Carson City.

The Mammovan will be parked at Smith's, 599 East William Street, both days from 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. The service is a program of Nevada Health Centers, Inc.

The Mammovan is a mobile mammography van that travels to underserved areas of the Silver State state to provide mammograms to women 40 and over and uninsured women who probably would not seek out mammography services on their own. The Mammovan provides screening and diagnostic tests.

Prestige and Carson Tahoe Health to provide senior care services to Carson City region

Prestige Care and Prestige Senior Living, leaders in skilled nursing and rehabilitation care, announced plans Tuesday to join with Carson Tahoe Health to expand senior care services and offer comprehensive memory care to Carson City residents and their families.

As a first step in the relationship, the organizations will develop a community with 40 units for memory care services on the Carson Tahoe Specialty Medical Center campus. Construction will begin in 2014.

CARSON CITY — Ticket sales have begun for the custom Nevada 150 commemorative state themed motorcycle celebrating the state’s Sesquicentennial anniversary. The Harley-Davidson bike was revealed as part of the Las Vegas Harley-Davidson® groundbreaking, where the winner will be announced at the store’s grand opening event on or about Nevada Day, Oct. 31, 2014.

Proscenium Players 'Wedding from Hell!' extends Brewery Arts Center showings

The Carson City run of Proscenium Players, Inc., murder mystery production of “The Wedding from Hell!” is being extended for two additional weekends at the Brewery Arts Center as a murder mystery dessert buffet show.

Performance dates are Fridays, Feb. 21, and Feb. 28 and Saturdays, Feb. 22 and March 1 at 6:30 p.m. There will also be a Saturday, March 1 matinee performance at 2 p.m. This will be a fundraiser performance for the Carson City Senior Citizen’s Center with all the proceeds going to the Senior Meals Programs. All performance will be held in the Maizie Harris Jesse Theater at the Brewery Arts Center located at 409 W. King Street, Carson City.

Local prosthetics practitioner Richard Riley inducted into the 2014 Class of Fellows by the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists

Riley, a certified practitioner of prosthetics at Prosthetic Consulting Technologies LLC in Washoe Valley, will be inducted into the 2014 class of Fellows by the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists (the Academy) during the organization’s 40th Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium on Friday, February 28 in Chicago. Riley is one of just 10 people in the nation to receive the distinction this year.

Carson City to host 50 employers at Feb. 21 job fair

Carson City area job seekers will have a chance to meet with at least 50 employers Feb. 21 at an employment fair at the community center.

The fair runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. inside the gym area of the Carson City Community Center, 851 East William Street. It is being sponsored by Carson City Health and Human Services, JOIN, Inc. and the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.

Lyon County master plan vote draws legal fire from residents

At the Lyon County Commission meeting January 2, the commissioners voted 4-1 to grant a request from Comstock Mining Inc., to modify the county Master Plan and change the zoning, which would allow pit mining in and adjacent to Silver City.

Four of the Commissioners ignored the recommendation of the Planning Commission and the express wishes of the citizens of Silver City and voted without explanation to abandon precedent and acquiesce to the company's desires.

Lyon commissioners OK Comstock Mining master plan amendment, zone change

In a 4 to 1 decision the Lyon County Board of Commissioners on Thursday approved a Master Plan Amendment and zone change sought by Comstock Mining.

Commissioners took testimony 4.5 hours of testimony in regards to Comstock Mining’s application for a Master Plan Amendment and Zone Change. The chambers and hallways filled with about 250 residents.

Carson Tahoe Wound Healing Center expands, adds hyperbaric oxygen chamber

More than 8 million people in the U.S. suffer from non-healing wounds, which are often impeded by such diseases and conditions as diabetes, obesity, aging and the late effects of radiation therapy.

The newly expanded Carson Tahoe Center for Wound Healing is located on the second floor of the Carson Tahoe Specialty Medical Center at 775 Fleischmann Dr. in Carson City. The center now provides the latest advanced treatments to help these patients heal and with a faster recovery times.

Carson City offers curbside and drop off Christmas tree recycling

Carson City will provide Christmas tree recycling in cooperation with public works and Capital Sanitation and Waste Management Inc.

As in previous years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day or taken to one of the dropoff locations. Trees will be chipped in the springtime and used as mulch. The program continues to be a success. Last year the effort redirected 59 tons of wood waste from the city's landfill.

New department store, restaurant coming to Carson Mall

Carson Mall will be getting a new Bealls department store to fill part of the space left by the departure of Gottschalks four years ago.

Joanna Holmes, property manager for the Carrington Company that owns the mall, confirmed that Bealls will be occupying 24,268 square feet of the mall, and that demolition work is already underway to ready the space for the new store.

Bealls is owned by Stage Stores, Inc., of Houston, Texas.

Work is already underway for the new Sportsman's Warehouse store announced in August.

Ametherm opens new manufacturing facility, doubles size of components plant

Carson City-based Ametherm, a manufacturer of thermistors and other electronic components for circuit protection, announced Thursday that it has doubled the size of its manufacturing plant with a newly purchased 36,000-square-foot facility on Carson City's east side.

In an industry where Asia-sourced components dominate, Ametherm manufactures all its products in the U.S.A., at its new facility and at a smaller Carson City plant that was its headquarters from 1994 until recently.

For the 15th year Friends To All volunteers will dress up in Santa suits and helper costumes to bring joy and cheer to senior citizens throughout Carson City.

On Saturday, Dec. 7, these festive groups will log between 150 and 200 stops as they make their rounds visiting and delivering gifts. Friends to All is seeking names and addresses of seniors who would enjoy a Santa visit this year.

Obituary: Lynn Palma Barbagallo Phalan

Lynn Palma Barbagallo Phalan, 71 years old, wife of James Phalan, died Tuesday, November 12, 2013 in Carson City, Nev.

Lynn was born Sept. 28, 1942 in Pittsburg, Calif. Among her survivors are her husband James Michael Phalan, her brother William (Lisa) Barbagallo, sister Noreen Byrd, daughter Michelle (Tim) Cleveland, sons Jeff Phalan, and Jim (Gabriela); step children Dave (Debbie) Phalan, Janine Phalan, and Greg (Dora) Phalan, grandchildren Nathan and Ashley Edwards, Zoey Cleveland, Emily Lawrence, Sofia, Jimmy, Jamie, Sara, Holly and Tierra Phalan.
