Gardening is a great activity that can be done at home, and University of Nevada, Reno Extension is offering online courses to teach gardening basics. This April, Extension's Grow Your Own, Nevada! Program will live stream eight classes statewide to help those who want to get on a path to more sustainable, local, healthy living by growing more of their own food.

CARSON CITY — The Division of Health Care Financing and Policy, Nevada Medicaid, announced steps taken to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, including expanded access to telehealth.

Greetings Students of Western Nevada College: I hope each of you are doing well. Needless to say, the last couple of days and weeks have brought great change. In response to Gov. Sisolak’s March 12 Emergency Declaration, the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange, the state agency that connects Nevadans to qualified health plans through the online State Based Exchange, known as Nevada Health Link, announces a limited-time Exceptional Circumstance Special Enrollment Period for qualified Nevadans who missed the Open Enrollment Period.

Sherrie Paulie Scaffidi is running for the Nevada Assembly Seat in District 40. Sherrie is a US Navy Seabee, veteran. She is a widower who lost her wife of 42 years to cancer in 2012. Sherrie is the father of three grown children. She lived in Carson City from 1991 to 2005 and happily moved back in 2018.

By noon Wednesday, all "non-essential" businesses in Nevada were required to shut down by state decree in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19. However, some local business owners were confused as to the procedure for the shut down, which businesses in fact are required to close and in what ways can they remain open.

This morning we wake up to a new reality in Carson City.

Last night at midnight, by order of Gov. Steve Sisolak, all casinos and gaming machines in Nevada shut down, and with them a large chunk of the state's tax revenue.

Today at noon, all non-essential businesses are supposed to close their doors. A majority of the state's workforce is starting today not knowing if they have a job, if they will be paid, or how they will pay their bills.

As Nevada communities comply with requests to limit large gatherings, blood drives have been canceled, and blood donation supplies are dwindling. The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services and local health authorities are reminding the community that donating blood is safe and needed at this time.

The Nevada Humane Society's shelters in Carson City and Reno are currently open and fully operational. Our primary goal right now is to reduce the number of animals housed at our shelters in an effort to avoid overcrowding should we need to restrict our services or close altogether.

CARSON CITY — As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to have an impact on the country and our local communities, the safety, health and welfare of all Nevadans is a top priority.

Despite growing concerns about the public health situation, the census is easier than ever for Nevadans to complete through one of three safe, confidential and quick ways from the comfort of their own homes: online at census.nv.gov, via phone (844-330-2020; for Spanish 844-468-2020), or mail in the hard copy questionnaire. This helps keep everyone safe — residents and census workers alike.

Gov. Steve Sisolak said that while a testing kit shortage makes it impossible to tell how much coronavirus has affected Nevada, the pace of the virus’ spread around the world means Nevada must “act quickly” to slow it — including taking drastic measures such as shutting state offices, limiting the size of gatherings and encouraging employees to work from home if possible.

As some of you may already know, Governor Sisolak today in a press conference ordered the closure of all Nevada K-12 schools until April 6. We will be following the guidance of our state government and closing our doors for the same time period to protect our Club members and our community.

Successful Nevada gardeners know that Nevada soils are worth the toil to ensure a great garden. Our native soils are low in organic matter due to low rainfall amounts. In addition, they are more alkaline than soils rich in organic matter. The alkalinity of a soil often interferes with micronutrient availability causing nutrient deficiencies in plants. The good news is that by adding organic matter, our soils can support healthy plants and yield good harvests.

NV Energy President Doug Cannon issued a press release in relation to COVID-19, and the help NV Energy will be offering to those affected who may find it difficult to stay afloat economically.

CARSON CITY — Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford is warning consumers to be alert of scammers looking to take advantage of fear surrounding the coronavirus (COVID-19) to sell fake products or steal your money or personal information. Fraudsters may use text messages, social media and emails to promote these scams.

The Nevada Northern Regional Behavioral Health Policy Board elected Taylor Allison, executive director of Partnership Douglas County, as their new chair on Feb. 26.

Lyon County Senior Centers in Dayton, Fernley, Silver Springs and Yerington announced Wednesday that they will be participating in the 18th annual March for Meals – a month-long, nationwide celebration of Meal on Wheels and our senior neighbors who rely on the vital service to remain healthy and independent at home. Lyon County Senior Centers celebrations will include various activities throughout the month of March.

Unless you live under a rock you are certainly aware that exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Despite that only 30% of the US population is currently achieving the daily recommended amount of physical activity. You may not be aware though that most fitness centers report losing approximately 50% of their members each year. Elite gyms will attempt to mitigate the loss of their members by offering programs that encourage attendance and a sense of community at their facility, such as group exercise classes. These elite gyms will still see losses of approximately 30% of their members yearly.

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Carson City Nevada Triad presents Scams Targeting Older Adults a presentation designed to educate you on the current trends in frauds and scams and learn how to not fall victim to their ploys. The event will take place in the Joshua Tree Room at the Carson City Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive, Tuesday, March 3 from 1 to 2 p.m.
