Heading into the backend of the work week, events lined up Thursday include day 1 of the 7th annual International Film Festival at the Carson City Community Center, a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a free information session on the legal and financial aspects of long-term care hosted by Carson Tahoe Care Center, the Carson City GOP will host a meeting to discuss precinct organization, plus trivia night at Bella Vita Bistro, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike and a lecture on women’s suffrage movement history in Nevada. Here's what's happening Thursday:

Carson City Sheriff's Office and Chamber host meeting on drug epidemic in Nevada. 8:30 a.m. CCSO and the chamber are providing citizens an opportunity to learn about the prevalence of drugs in Nevada. Those who have no idea about black market drugs and how our youth are obtaining them should attend this eye-opening presentation. The event is free, seating is limited. The meeting is at the Carson City Chamber meeting room, 1900 South Carson Street.

International Film Festival runs Thursday through Saturday at Carson City Community Center. All are invited to attend three days and nights of free film showings at the 7th annual Carson City International Film Festival, which runs Thursday through Saturday. Sponsored by Friends of the Carson City Library, Carson City Culture & Tourism Authority and Bob Boldrick Theater, several independent international films will be shown. The festival consists of free afternoon and evening film viewings followed by informal discussions. Showings are from 3 to 5 p.m. and evening showings begin at 6 p.m. Tickets are not needed, and everyone is invited. The Bob Boldrick Theater is located at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street, Carson City. Afternoon showings will spotlight the independently made films selected by the International Film Weekend Committee, while evening viewings will consist of award-winning, commercially-produced international films including Babette’s Feast and Mar Adentro “The Sea Inside." The competition-winning films are produced by students or independent filmmakers in the United States or abroad. Selection criteria includes awareness, diversity, understanding and craft. Explore Your Long-Term Care Options at Carson Tahoe Care Center. Carson Tahoe Care Center invites community members to attend a free information session on Thursday, February 27 at 2 p.m., on the legal and financial aspects of long-term care. During this free session, elder law attorney John Smith will be on-site to share tips and tools to help community members understand the basics of elder law and other important elements to consider as families plan for long-term care. Serving the greater Reno and Carson City areas, Smith has vast experience in elder law and long-term care planning. He understands that the financial and legal aspects of long-term care can be complex to navigate on your own, which is why he takes time to explain the not only the legal process, but what each element entails, as well. As a partner in active aging, Prestige is dedicated to helping older adults gain access to the information and support they need to live healthy, meaningful lives. Capital City Arts Initiative to present 'Impact' exhibition featuring Lake Tahoe artist Paula Chung. Daily through May 28. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition "Impact" by artist Paula Chung at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery in Carson City. The exhibition will be in the gallery through May 28, 2020. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Paula Chung’s Impact works address violence on sports fields, battlefields, and the streets. Through the use of medical imagery, she illustrates how violence affects us all.

Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'Photo Finished 2020' exhibition. Daily. The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Photo Finished 2020, at the Community Development Building, the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Nine students from Carson High School’s Advanced Photography program have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public through March 26, 2020, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The Carson High students include Jackie Garza, Ansley Griffin, Karla Herrera, Meagan Kiesow, Kayee Konze, Kailee Luschar, Vanessa Martinez, Haley Trost, and Valerie Wamsley. The artists are all students in Kara Ferrin’s Advanced Photography class.

Nevada Artists Association Judged Winter Show to run through March 27. 10 a.m. Nevada Artists Association presents the Winter Show. This is a judged show presenting a wide array of entries from Northern Nevada artists. This show runs through March 27. The Gallery is located at 449 W. King Street in Carson City and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. everyday, except Monday. Carson City Library hosts Family Storytime. 11:30 to 12:15 a.m. These are both the same and last 45 minutes. Weekly themed singing, stories, finger-plays, or art centered around a book. Muscle Powered hosts Thursday, Feb. 27 hike at Centennial Park. 3 p.m. join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building. Thursday's hike is at Centennial Park, Wild Horse Trail. Meet at the back of Centennial Park, north end, across from the ballfields on Heritage Way. Thursday hikes start at 3 p.m. and are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. Water and closed-toed shoes are required. Museum lecture in Carson City to focus on women’s suffrage in Nevada. 6:30 p.m. Efforts to secure voting rights for Nevada women began as early as 1869 — just five years after statehood – but it wouldn’t be until 1914 that male voters passed the state’s women’s suffrage amendment. These actions coincided with national women’s suffrage efforts and issues and they are the subject of this month’s Frances Humphrey Lecture Series at the Nevada State Museum. Joanne L. Goodwin, a professor of history and director emerita of the Women’s Research Institute of Nevada at UNLV, will present “Nevada and the Campaign for Women’s Voting Rights,” linking Nevada’s story with major turns in the national movement and providing profiles of women who were central to the state and national campaigns. The lecture starts at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27 at the museum, 600 N. Carson St., Carson City. Admission is $8; free for museum members and children 17 and younger. Seating is limited and those planning to go should reserve their seats by going here.

Carson City, Douglas and Washoe GOP to discuss precinct organization. 6:30 p.m. The meeting at the Casino Fandango Ballroom features Republican members of Carson City, Washoe and Douglas counties who will share their perspectives on how to build informational building blocks in local, state and federal elections. Speakers include Carol Fineberg, Field Operations Chair, Washoe County, Julie Moore, 2nd Vice Chair, Douglas County, Bepsy Strasburg, State Committeewoman, Carson City and County. St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Carson City will host its first "Walking as One at 1" labyrinth walk on Saturday, May 4 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at 314 N. Division at Telegraph.

Local musician Liz Broscoe has released a song that features Lake Tahoe and the challenges to keep it blue, and it could become the next battle cry to protect the lake.

Carson High School named Mikey Hoffer and Selma Works as the 2024 Prom King and Queen. A short coronation ceremony was held during the prom dance. Additionally, Rodrigo Diaz and Alissa Powers were crowned Carson High School’s Friendship Ball King and Queen during that dance Thursday evening in the Morse Burley Gym.

The Nevada State Museum and University of Nevada, Reno conducted archaeological excavations at Fort Churchill State Park in the mid-1970s. Museum staff and research associates are re-examining these collections reflecting U.S. Army and other military units’ occupation of the fort between 1860 and 1869.
