With Thanksgiving leftovers winding down, we're winding up to the second day in December and the first day of the work week ahead, with activities lined up through the weekend. For Monday, activities around the capital city include a free yoga class offered through Partnership Carson City, a discussion on the Tom Steyer campaign hosted by the Carson City Democratic Men's Club, art events and more. Five years ago, Chef Don Pepe launched a holiday fundraiser to help Pets of the Homeless, a Carson City-based 501(c)3 non-profit that raises money to provide food, veterinary care and other essentials to the pets of homeless persons.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the 31st season of the Nutcracker Ballet, a Feast with a Hero fundraiser at Slot World, Small Business Saturday throughout Carson City and Carson Valley, photos with Santa, a Telegraph Square sign dedication, Polar Express train rides at the V&T Railroad and more!

The last Thursday of November means a big gobble gobble, Happy Thanksgiving to all. Enjoy in the games, festivities, activities at home and outdoors. Events are at a minimum, for obvious reasons, but the two big ones are traditions for us in the capital city. The Carson City Turkey Trot at the Governor's Mansion and the free Carson Nugget Thanksgiving community dinner. Enjoy your day and any slight break in the weather. More winter storms are on the way.

With snow overnight into the morning, the eve of Thanksgiving will bustle with last minute food shopping and, for many, preparing for an extended holiday weekend. There's a few activities around Carson City on Wednesday, Nov. 27 including a "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, art showings, classes and more.

Community Roots & Shoots’ annual Holiday Open House is Saturday, Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 209 Dayton Valley Road.

Save the date for opportunities to shop local. Everything in the shop will be 10 percent off during the Holiday Open House. Complimentary treats and hot cocoa will be offered, and Santa will visit from 2pm-6pm.

The nonprofit floral and gift shop offers unique gifts, holiday and all occasion floral arrangements and cards, plus wreaths, garlands and Christmas trees.

With the season's first big winter storm expected to arrive later Tuesday evening into Thanksgiving, you can still get in activities around the capital city before the snow flies. There's a morning walk and evening hike with Muscle Powered, a job fair at the Carson Nugget, fitness and swing classes at Yaple's Ballroom, a Carson City School Board meeting and more.

Enjoy any sunshine Monday as our first significant snow storm of the season is ahead this Thanksgiving holiday week. Activities and happenings on the first day of the work week, Nov. 25, 2019 include a free yoga class offered through Partnership Carson City, a discussion on the Julian Castro campaign hosted by the Carson City Democratic Men's Club, art events and more.

North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, along with California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy and the USDA Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations over the next few weeks in the Tahoe Basin — weather conditions and staffing permitted.

If you too have been thinking of planting new trees or shrubs, plant now, instead of planting in the spring when the soil is cold. Trees do best next year when planted this fall when the soil is warm. Even as the temperatures drop, the soil stays warm until hard freezes last for weeks.

The American Citizen Essay winners are in, and they all have one thing in common: cash prizes. This year, the Carson City School District Board of Trustees selected the topic, “An early motto of the United States was e pluribus unum, which means ‘out of many, one,’ so how do we embrace diversity and inclusiveness to come together as one country?”

Partly sunny skies and cool temperatures are expected Thursday with a warmup in time for the weekend. Events ahead around the capital city include a meeting of the Board of Supervisors, a discussion on holiday stress and dementia offered by Carson Tahoe Expressions Memory Care, and an afternoon hike hosted by Muscle Powered. Even though valley rain and Sierra snow happen this time of year, we're in for a brief change after going weeks without any precipitation. Enjoy the changeup. CARSON CITY — The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources on Monday announced the appointment of Heidi Swank as the inaugural Administrator for NDCNR’s new Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation.

Hello fellow anglers. This time of year, I personally wish that it would stay daylight savings time. The morning we had the time change, Tom Blotter and I decided to venture up to Frenchman’s Lake for a little fishing activity. We had a long discussion on what would be the right time to meet in the morning to leave. Would it be 3 AM new time or 4 PM old time.  We left at 4 AM and got there in total darkness not prepared, I did not bring a flash light or a head light. Quite comically we prepped the boat using the light from our phones, then waited until we had enough light to safely launch. We fished until 2 pm to make sure we got home before dark.

The Wolf Pack community can help the University of Nevada, Reno transform lives by donating blood this Thanksgiving season. The blood drive, brought to campus by the Associated Students of the University of Nevada and Vitalant (formerly United Blood Services), is scheduled Wednesday, Nov. 27. There are four locations, all taking blood on this day; no appointments necessary.

Heading into the middle of the month, we're all deserving of a high five. You can give an entire family a big cheer Thursday by donating a turkey at the annual Carson City High Five Turkey Drive hosted by FISH at Carson City Nissan. Stop by, bring a turkey and give a local family in need a happy Thanksgiving. Other events around the capital city include a Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training graduation ceremony, a talk about earthquake preparedness hosted by Carson City Native and Newcomers Club, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike and more.

While much of the nation is stuck in an arctic freeze, we're stranded with abundant sunshine in Nevada's capital city area with temperatures well above normal for this time of year. Going into the middle of the work week we can expect highs near 70. Local events Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2019 include an Eagle Valley Middle School expansion plan community meeting, "Get Fit with Fight Camp" at Yaple's Ballroom, a Little Valley fire re-seeding gathering, a Toys for Tots volunteer orientation meeting, art showings, classes and more.

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties’ November public breakfast meeting will be in Yerington at the Boys & Girls Club’s main gym at 124 North Main Street on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 9 a.m.

Heading into Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019 activities around the capital city include a morning walk and evening hike with Muscle Powered, a Leave No Trace hike and, later, a full moon hike hosted by Carson City Parks and Rec, a Carson City School District board meeting, the monthly gathering of the Carson Fly Fishing Club, pole fitness and swing dance lessons at Yaple's Ballroom and more.

Going into Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 it is Veterans Day. Federal, state and local government offices and schools are closed to observe the holiday. Thank you U.S. Veterans for your service to our great country. There are a number of organized happenings in the region, including parades in Virginia City and Reno, as well as events in South Lake Tahoe and Sparks. Plus a number of Carson City and Carson Valley restaurants are offering no cost meals as a gesture of gratitude to veterans and active duty military members. Also Monday is a discussion on homeless issues with local advocate and champion for those who are often without a voice, Dee Dee Foremaster.

The first week of November marches along with sunshine to continue into the foreseeable future. Events ahead for this Thursday include a regular meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, a Mammovan stop at Nevada Health Centers, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike, and an evening with local artist Rebecca Fox at Artsy Fartsy Gallery. Settling into the week as we head into Tuesday, Nov. 5, activities around the capital city include a morning walk and evening hike with Muscle Powered, a Salvation Army holiday job fair, plus a grant workshop through the Nevada Arts Council, an evening showing of the 1951 film "An American in Paris" hosted by the Carson City Classic Cinema Club, pole fitness and swing dance lessons at Yaple's Ballroom and more.

A warmup is in the forecast this week as we head into Monday, Nov. 4, 2019. Expect sunny skies with daytime highs in the upper 60s. But you'll want to bundle up after the sun sets as night time temperatures will be in the low 30s.
