Thomas Kraft considers his civilian life a work in progress. But to the case managers of the Northern Nevada Veterans Resource Center of America, he's been building a success story for himself since arriving in Carson City.

The 58 year-old United States Navy veteran and former submariner had been homeless for about 13 years when he arrived in Carson City last fall from Southern California, where he had lived for much of his civilian life.

Strong wind gusts around Carson City kept public works, tree services, cable and NV Energy crews busy Friday afternoon.

High wind speeds around Carson City: CarsonWeather.com reports a gust of 51 mph at 1:45 p.m; Carson City Airport, 31 mph; Carson Valley DRI sensor north of Gardnerville, 61 mph; 89 mph at Washoe Valley's Nevada Department of Transportation site. On I-580 at Galena Bridge a gust was reported at 84 mph; and the highest gust thus far was 135 mph at Slide Mountain.

Privately funded benches, bike racks to add character to downtown Carson City

Carson City residents will be able to buy a piece of history while supporting the downtown redevelopment to begin this March.

Metal benches and bicycle racks to be placed strategically along Carson and Curry Streets are available for purchase by businesses, those who wish to remember or honor a loved one or family, or simply to put a family name on the bench.

Comstock Cemetery Foundation benefits from Virginia City's own Nevada-made gin spirit

For more than seven years Virginia City has been having fun with “Cemetery Gin” a Nevada-made spirit available at local saloons, bars and stores throughout Northern Nevada which celebrates a tall tale from the Comstock’s rich mining days of the 1850s.

Spearheaded by the Virginia City Tourism Commission, the gin is a product of Frey Ranch Estate Distillery, located in Fallon, Nev., where all the ingredients were grown, distilled and bottled.

Carson City sheriff's log: False ID leads to felony arrest on narcotics warrant

Two women were arrested on felony charges after a traffic stop early Saturday on I-580 near College Parkway, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said. The first was booked for providing false ID to avoid prosecution, a felony, and parole and probation violation. The second woman was wanted by U.S. Marshals on a felony warrant for pretrial violations related to a federal narcotics case.
