Carson City jail fight leads to two felony arrests

Two inmates at the Carson City jail were arrested on suspicion of felony battery Friday morning, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

According to the arrest report, last Monday at 1 p.m. Alexander Lee Jespersen of Gardnerville, 20, and Tanner Ogden, listed as a transient, also age 20, were observed slapping each other in the face on video camera. The inmates then entered a cell to complete the fight and deputies subsequently arrived to break it up and investigate the incident. Bail for both men is $20,000 in addition to their original charges.

Other arrests: A 37-year-old man of Reno was arrested for felony probation violation Saturday at 5:22 p.m. near South Carson and 10th streets after he was seen walking in the traffic lane of South Carson Street, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said. After speaking with a sheriff’s deputy, Nathan Michael Newkirk was found to have a warrant out for his arrest and was placed into custody and is being held without bail in lieu of a hearing.

— A 33-year-old Carson City woman was arrested for three counts of misdemeanor child abuse/neglect and DUI Friday at 11:46 p.m. near David and Fall streets after a call was placed alerting deputies to a suspicious vehicle. Deputies made contact with the vehicle where it smelled of marijuana, according to the arrest report. After questioning, the driver admitted to smoking marijuana in the vehicle, which also had her two daughters and her minor sister, and failed a field sobriety test. Bail: $8,500.

— A 21-year-old man of Yerington was arrested for misdemeanor battery of a peace officer Saturday at 2:01 a.m. in the 2900 block of Menlo after deputies responded to a call of an intoxicated man. Upon arriving at the scene, the suspect’s aunt advised deputies that the man was inside banging his head on counter the and screaming.

As deputies entered the residence, the suspect stated “he wanted to fight” and rushed at deputies, striking one of them. After getting the suspect restrained, it was determined he was on a substance other than alcohol and he was transported to a medical facility for further evaluation where he admitted to take “dove”, a mixture of LSD, MDMA, and amphetamine. His blood-alcohol content was also checked and was found to be .233%. After being medically cleared, he was transported to jail. Bail: $2,500.

— A 33-year-old Carson City man was arrested for misdemeanor DUI and failure to maintain his travel lane Saturday at 2:50 a.m. in the 1400 block of East William Street. A sheriff’s deputy observed the man swerve across his lanes and conducted a traffic stop where the suspect blew a .206 on a breathalyzer. Bail: $1,040.

— A 32-year-old Carson City woman was arrested for misdemeanor DUI Saturday at 5:20 p.m. at her home on Brookside Way after deputies responded to a 911 call of a person screaming and cussing at her children in the street.

According to the arrest report, the suspect fled the scene before deputies arrived and she was located at home based on her license plate. Deputies began questioning her about the confrontation down the street when she showed visible signs of intoxication.

Through slurred speech the suspect detailed how she yelled at the children because they have no business playing in the street and became increasingly agitated. Then deputies asked the woman if she had been drinking before the confrontation, and she stated she had had one drink before coming home, and was not “drinking and driving:. The deputy stated he believed she had been drinking then driving, and then the suspect wanted to debate with the sheriff’s deputy about the definition of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The suspect was placed into custody after refusing several times to cooperate. At jail continued to refuse a breathalyzer and blood draw, and a warrant had to be obtained to collect evidence. Bail: $1,000.

— A 25-year-old Carson City woman was arrested for a misdemeanor failure to appear warrant Friday at 11:29 p.m. in the 1100 block of North Fall street after deputies found an intoxicated minor at the corner of David and Fall and were given an address. According to the arrest report, the deputy walked to the address given and located four adults outside the residence. A warrants search was done on all four, and the woman was placed into custody. Bail: $425.

— A 23-year-old man from Seattle, Wash. was arrested for misdemeanor disorderly conduct Saturday at 12:13 p.m. in the 1400 block of North Carson Street after being asked repeatedly by deputies to leave the property, a sheriff’s deputy said. The suspect had contact with deputies the previous evening for creating a disturbance, and on their second contact instead of leaving peacefully the suspect began recording the incident, then began cursing at the deputies and advancing toward them. After detaining the man, it was discovered he was on alternative sentencing for disorderly conduct as well. Bail: $150.

NV Energy reports 2,636 customers without power Monday morning in Carson City. The outage was reported at 9:46 a.m. At this time there is not an estimated time of restoration. The cause is under investigation.

UPDATE 5PM: Fire crews will be mopping up the Callahan Fire overnight and into tomorrow. One primary residential structure was lost along with multiple outbuildings. The cause is under investigation at this time. Some fire evacuations remain in place at Callahan Rd and Fawn Lane as crews mop up hot spots. See Perimetermap.com here for evacuation updates.

UPDATE 12:55PM: The fire is estimated at approximately 100 acres; approximately 3,000 people have been impacted by evacuations. Rain is falling on the fire scene. Additional Strike Teams totaling 10-15 engines have begun arriving to assist on the fire, according to Eastern Sierra Fire and Ice, which tracks fires in the region.

Just before 11 a.m. on Monday, the Washoe County Alert system sent out an evacuation notice to residents in the Callahan Ranch area stating they should evacuate immediately.

The evacuation point is at South Valleys Library located at 15650A Wedge Pkwy, Reno.

Dayton Elementary students were treated Friday to a helicopter fly-in by the Nevada National Guard as part of the school's Veterans Day program.

A team from Nevada National Guard landed a helicopter on the soccer field after the school's Veterans Day assembly. Dayton Elementary is the only school in Lyon County that is a Purple Star School.

Veterans Day is Monday, Nov. 11 and is a federal holiday to honor all veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. A number of events are planned in Carson City and surrounding counties.

Charle Abowd, a world renowned, award-winning chef and restaurateur but even more than that a philanthropist and community fixture for decades, died Saturday evening, according to longtime friends.

Abowd, 73, was a pioneer in farm to table dining, along with his wife Karen who co-owned Cafe at Adele's, he was a champion and supporter of music and the arts. He was a man who dedicated himself to lifting up others.

The Morgan Mill High-Water Mark unveiling will be held on Nov. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Morgan Mill River Access Area, 5597 Morgan Mill Road. This high-water mark project is an outreach tool designed to let people know their flood risk and to underscore how floodplains and open spaces work together to reduce their flood risk.

After a relatively mild weekend, another storm system is expected to arrive Monday that will bring gusty winds, mountain snow and some valley rain, according to the National Weather Service.

Carson City Fire Department, sheriff's deputies and Nevada Highway Patrol were called Saturday evening to a crash involving three vehicles near the intersection of Highway 50 East and Fairview.
