Monday, May 28: Events and happenings around Carson City this Memorial Day

Today we honor those who have not only served, but who gave all in defense of our country. A tribute ceremony at Lone Mountain Cemetery for our Nevadan veterans will begin at 1 p.m. A memorial for our Native American veterans begins at 10 a.m. at the cemetery across the street from the Stewart Indian School. The 10th annual barbecue at Evergreen Gene’s welcomes all comers, and veterans will get 25 percent any of the fun things they find in the shop. Read on below for more happenings today.

Thursday hike to Skunk Harbor, Lake Tahoe sponsored by Muscle Powered

Come out and join us for free hikes each week to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet in the Highway 50 Park n Ride where we will carpool up to Skunk Harbor parking lot/trailhead.

Bring a friend and/or friendly dogs. All hikes are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500 feet or more.

Water and sturdy or athletic shoes are required. Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles recommended. Some trails are dirt and others are paved. In case of bad weather, we will cancel.

Thursday hike to Ash Creek Trail sponsored by Muscle Powered

Come out and join us for free hikes each week to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet at the end of the asphalt on Ash Canyon Road to carpool to the trailhead or meet at the square pond near the water tanks.

Water and sturdy or athletic shoes are required. Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles recommended. Some trails are dirt and others are paved.

The annual Chili on the Comstock Competition takes over the tiny town of Virginia City, including a saloon crawl Saturday and the hilarious ‘Fun with the Runs’ 5K. Families will have a hard time choosing between the Cops and Kids Open House and Safety Fair at the Sheriff’s Office and the ‘Kids to Parks’ Day activities at Silver Saddle Ranch. Owners of Mangia Tutto, a new Italian pizzeria and ristorante that will occupy the former D'Vine Wines space located at 200 North Stewart Street, said they plan to open in July 2018 at the corner of Musser and Stewart streets in downtown Carson City.

Nevada law enforcement to buckle down on seat belt enforcement through end of May

The Nevada Highway Patrol will be looking for motorists and occupants who are not buckled up while traveling. Troopers, deputies and officers will be stopping drivers for different traffic offenses and issuing citations for seatbelt violations from Tuesday through May 31 across Northern Nevada.

The Western Nevada FC Coyotes will be holding a 48-hour 12th Man fundraising campaign starting Tuesday, May 8 at 10 a.m. Money raised during the campaign will help offset some of the costs the team incurs, especially on road trips. The club has set a goal for this fundraiser of $5,000 with 200 people joining at various levels within the 12th Man Club.
