Hot air balloons Sunday morning in Carson City celebrate firefighter's retirement

Three hot air balloons are scheduled to launch early Sunday morning from East Fork Fire Station 12, located at 3620 North Sunridge Drive in South Carson City, part of a retirement celebration for a firefighting veteran with the East Fork Fire District in Douglas County.

As quickly as it appeared, the circus will be leaving after tonight’s performance. If you haven’t yet seen the acrobatic feats and playful antics of the Ramos Bros. Circus, you’re running out of options. Monday also brings a fun activity to the grounds of the Mormon Station State Park in Genoa. Kids will learn something new, make something, and spend some time outdoors. Now that summer has arrived, Food for Thought begins its summer program for kids in the Carson City area.

Upper Colony Road Fire in Smith Valley more than 1,180 acres, sixth brush fire in Lyon County since June 2

UPDATE: 8:42AM: From Lyon County Facebook page: Lyon County had its 6th wildfire since June 2. The Upper Colony burned more than 1,000 acres on June 17, 2018. A Type 3 Incident Management Team took the fire over at 8 p.m.
The Smith Valley Fire District did an outstanding job working the fire and bringing in resources. Over 300 people fought this fire with 25 Engines, 3 Helicopters, 8 fixed wing aircraft, and 4 hand crews.

Lyon County opened a shelter at the Smith Valley Baptist Church. LCSO managed evacuations with the assistance of SAR and Douglas County. The Large Animal Rescue Team assisted with sheltering livestock.

New restaurant Gather carries on family legacy of Carson City native

Angela Bullentini Wolf has a long family history in the Carson City area. Her ancestors settled here about 150 years ago way back in the days of Abraham Curry.

They were ranchers and business owners then.

Piper Fire in clean-up mode, Lyon County reports

The Piper Fire, which burned about 300 acres near Silver Springs, was downgraded to clean-up mode Friday night, according to a post on the Central Lyon County Fire Protection District Facebook page.

"The forecast for tomorrow is not favorable,," the district stated. "We’ll have crews monitoring the burn area tonight and patrolling tomorrow. The cause of the fire is still being investigated."

Chaves Fire east of Dayton in Lyon County grows overnight

BREAKING NEWS 5:47PM: The cause of the fire burning in Lyon County was determined to be by target shooting, County Manager Jeff Page reports. The fire is 75 percent contained at this time and night operations will be in place.
